My Development with TPACK

At the beginning of this course, I’ll admit I was something of a technophobe when it came to education, even though I use technology quite frequently and fluently at home.

For the first half of this course, I stuck to that: if I was going to use technology in the classroom, it would be little more than a video or PowerPoint, and it would rank fairly lowly on the SAMR model. I didn’t think that I needed to develop each part of TPACK because I didn’t think I would ever have a strong need for technology in my classroom.

I believe my original aversion to technology was just because I had nearly no knowledge of how technology could be used in a classroom; I’d never seen it for myself.

Because I couldn’t understand how technology could be incorporated into the classroom, I rejected the idea that I should use it as often as I would recommend using it now.

The SAMR Model Once we started our work on

modules 5 and 6, I started to view technology differently. The world of technology came to life for me all over again, and suddenly I was dreaming up ways to brighten up my classroom for my future students.

Suddenly, my idea of what TPACK looked like for me changed quite a lot. It looked something like this…

My Revised TPACK ModelI realized that I did have knowledge of technology—in fact, I’m more educated on technology than a lot of my peers.

The work that was ahead of me was integrating this existing knowledge into an educational context, and I have managed to do that during my time in this course.

I began to learn about new technologies that could be used in my classes…English (Secondary Level)• WordPress/Blogger/Wix/Weebly

for keeping journals and doing “QuickWrites.”

• eBooks, used in tandem with online software like Evernote that could design a full novel study course.

Social Studies (Secondary Level)• 10x10 as a way to start class

discussions about current events.

• Interactive lessons for mobile devices to act as “Check Your Understanding” quizzes for articles handed out in class.

Where I am NowMy “EDU 210 journey” has taken me all sorts of amazing places with technology. My philosophy of technology has completely changed and, as a result, TPACK is beginning to change for me.

I’m recognizing that all of this knowledge that I have doesn’t have to be separated, and that the things I know are all related to one another. I’m not where I would like to be yet, but I’m certainly well on my way.
