WHY ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY?

TO PROVIDE EQUAL OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL STUDENTS TO LEARN AND ACHIEVE

•Assistive Technology equips students with disabilities resources to successfully achieve academically.

•Assist students with disabilities the ability to MEET common educational standards and requirements.

EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTSGEORGIA PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

READING/WRITING/LANGUAGE•Reading comprehension

•Show evidence of expanding language and vocabulary skills

SCIENCEThe knowledge between science, our environment, and our everyday world is crucial to each student’s success. Hands-on student centered, and inquiry based approached for instruction.

MATHEMATICS

Work independently and cooperatively to solve problems, estimating and

computing efficiently and conducting investigations and recording findings

SOCIAL STUDIESLearn U.S. History, Geography, Forms of Government and Basic Economics Concepts using information processing skills.

All students have the ability to learn despite of disabilities. Connections to the right resources and environment can cultivate success.

All students regardless of disabilities must meet the Georgia Performance Standards.

Based on information from Georgia Performance Standards Website

BEFORE ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY

Identify needs and challenges academically.

Identify strengths to compensate disability.

Identify interests, skills and experiences in using technology.

Identify the setting and situations to effectively use assistive technology.

According to the website greatschools.com, it is best to use an individualized child profile to determine the type and usage of assistive technology that will provide an inclusive learning experience.

Students diagnosed with ADHD are learners that usually have the characteristics of not being able to concentrate and to stay on task. ADHD Students are usually visual learners.

Assistive technology can assist students in organization and time management as well as improving concentration.

Assistive Technology for Auditory Disabilities

Room acoustics/reverberation Distance between listener and

sound source Competing noises (Other students, machines, etc.)

Assistive Technology for Auditory Disabilities

For minor hearing problems simply relocating the student to the front of the class may be the solution

Other solutions include.. Personal frequency modulators which can be used with

or without hearing aids. Infrared systems used with devices such as

televisions. Induction loop systems in which the student can hear

the lectures or other multimedia devices. Closed Captioned TV Computerized speech recognition.

All methods could help improve performance in all subjects. Critical subjects such as Reading and Language would be greatly affected.

Assistive Technology for Mild Learning Disabilities – READING

Alternate format booksSymbolized texts for struggling readersReading pens to improve vocabulary

Problems of Comprehension

Bookstands, copyholders for reading notes, etc.Page turnersTracking aids such as bookmarks, reading strips, highlighted magnifiers watch minder - gives reminders and training for self monitoring (time management)Contrast aid such as EZC ReadersHandheld or small magnifiers or reading pens for students with low vision

Physical – Difficulty in positioning materials for easy reading or seeing materials

ProductsProblem

Barriers such as students from another country learning English as second language, physical disabilities and problems of comprehension of subject matter can caused difficulties in reading.

Based on the analysis of the identified problem, assistive technology can assist students to learn by overcoming those barriers by using some of these suggested techniques in an inclusive classroom learning environment.

Assistive Technology for Mild Learning Disabilities – WRITING

Interactive Whiteboard activities Software such as GINGER that assists students with Dyslexia to analyze and correct grammar and spelling in a word processor.Word processors Use of multimedia, graphics in instruction to increase creativity and interest of subject matter.Provide access to general education materials via the internet.Use of software such as Draftbuilder that guides students through the writing process.

Problems of Comprehension

Computers and word processorsUse of pencil grips or slant boardsUse of Smart pens such as ECHO by Livescribe that allows students to take notes and record lectures simultaneously for easy playback. Use of advanced reading and writing aids such as KURZWELL 3000 and Read & Write Gold.

Physical – Difficulty in positioning materials for easy writing or note taking

ProductsProblem

Barriers such as students from another country learning English, physical disabilities and problems of comprehension of subject matter can also cause difficulties in developing writing skills.

Based on the analysis of the identified problem, assistive technology can assist students to learn by overcoming those barriers by using some of these suggested techniques in an inclusive classroom learning environment.

Assistive Technology for Mild Learning Disabilities – OTHER SUBJECTS

Interactive Whiteboard activities Word processors Use of multimedia, graphics in instruction to increase creativity and interest of subject matter.Provide access to general education materials via the internet. Materials such as multimedia, online encyclopedia, publications, e-books, etc.Concept Webbing applicationsHands on applicable learning experiences with experiments, etc.

Products

Some students have problems in other subjects such as Mathematics, Science, and Social Students that stems from deficiencies in reading, writing and comprehension. These may also be a result of learning English as a second language or physical disabilities.

The following assistive technology can also assist students to learn by overcoming those barriers by using some of these suggested techniques in a universal design teaching strategy that provides options for an inclusive classroom learning environment.
