• Maternal to fetal transport of neurotoxins can readily occur in pregnancy
• Alcohol (OR=2), cigarette (OR=3) and drugs are well-known risk factors forADHD
• Chronic, low-level lead intoxication occurs in 20% of children less than 6years old at levels that are known to cause cognitive deficits and behavioraldisturbances
• Lead has no threshold for causing damage
• One study found a striking dose-response relationship between hair leadlevels and the likelihood of being diagnosed with ADHD, as well as the ratedseverity of attention deficit
• Several studies have shown children with ADHD have lowerlevels of gamma linolenic acid (GLA – omega 6), arachidonic acid(AA – omega 6) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA – omega 3)
• Other study has showed low plasma eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA – omega 3)
• DHA is the most important brain fatty acids. Important role forretinal development and highly concentrated in synapses.Dopamine-producing nerve endings are made up of 80% DHA.
• Bottle-feeding is a risk factor for ADHD (OR=2)

Vitamin B6Vitamin B6
• Pyridoxine is essential for neurotransmitter synthesis
• No studies on measured insufficiency
• One study of high dose showed improvement in behavior
• Zinc status has been shown to predict poor response tostimulant medication (zinc+methylphenidate had better outcomethan methylphenidate alone)
• One study found that zinc sulphate supplementation for 12weeks improved ADHD scales for hyperactivity, impulsivity, andsocialization (but not inattention)

Amino acidsAmino acids
One study analyzing plasma levels of various amino acidsreported that ADHD children were lower in the following(compared to controls):
• In mid-1970s, Feingold claimed up to 50% of children withADHD were sensitive to food additives as well as to salicylate thatoccur naturally in some foods
•Several studies have found a significant correlation betweenADHD and atopic illness
• ADHD is linked to food allergies and food intolerances, at leastin some subset of children

Food allergiesFood allergies
• One study demonstrated EEG changes immediately followingthe ingestion of previously identified sensitizing foods
• Neuroactive peptides from food have been shown to play asignificant role in the etiology of autism
• Per capita daily consumption of food additives in the US is 13-15grams
• Lyon showed that children with ADHD (66) had the following:- 74% had gut permeability- 46% had absent lactobacilli and bifidobacteria4- 44% had depressed secretory IgA- 41% had protozoal parasites- 32% had Candida albicans overgrowth
• 85% of autistic have malabsorption• maldigestion (58% have low CHO digestion)• microbial overgrowth

Gut imbalancesGut imbalances
• Endoscopic abnormalities in autistic- 69% have chronic esophagitis- 67% have chronic duodenitis- 42% have chronic gastritis
1. Has the mother undergone significant emotional stress duringpregnancy?
Rationale:
Maternal stress during pregnancy alters the subtle balance of hormones inthe mother. That has been shown to have a negative impact on thedeveloping fetus, sensitizing it also to future stresses. Moreover, itimpacts the proper development of the prefrontal cortex, especially inboys.
2. Has the child suffered a stressful birth or birth trauma?
Rationale:
Stressful or traumatic birth (including C-section, use of forceps or vacuum,or even lots of pulling and twisting on the head) in a “natural” birth candamage the tissues of the delicate upper part of the neck. Chiropractorscall these damages vertebral subluxations.

3. Was the child born differently than with natural, vaginalbirth?
Rationale:
The vaginal delivery process allows for the activation of primitiveneurological reflexes that are essential to proper neurologicaldevelopment of the child. If the child was born by C-section, thoseprimitive neurological reflexes may not have been activated properly.
If the child did not cry at birth, it might be a sign that the brain receivedinsufficient oxygen (hypoxia) during labor.

5. Did the baby have “craddle cap” or “milk crust” (neonatalseborrhea dermatitis)?
Rationale:
Craddle cap or milk crust ma be a sign of intolerance, sensitivity or allergyto milk. This intolerance may even be transmitted through breast-feedingif the mother eats dairy products herself.
Amalgam fillings are made up of 50% mercury. Part of mercury leaks outof the mother and can cross the placental barrier. This is especially true ifthe mother has dental work done on those fillings during pregnancy.

7. Has the child been vaccinated?
Rationale:
Some vaccines contain mercury in the form of thiomersal. They also containaluminum and other toxins that can affect the proper development of thebrain. Heavy metals have been correlated to ADHD severity.
8. Did the child crawl and go on all four before to walk?
Rationale:
Military crawling and going on all four before starting to walk is an importantsequential part of neurological development. If the child did not go throughthose stages, or went through them improperly or too fast, his or herneurological development may be have been subtly compromised.

9. Has the child received one or more course of antibiotics?
Rationale:
Antibiotics – along with bottle feeding, stress, junk foods and the use ofNSAIDs – will alter the delicate balance of the gut ecosystem. The normal, beneficial flora may not have developed properly or may have been altered. In consequence, bad bacteria and other organisms can develop which willstress the immune system and produce lots of toxins that get into the bodyand the brain
10. Does the child suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding),especially at night?
Rationale:
Teet grinding, especially at night, may be a sign of parasitic infection. Asmall study of 63 ADHD children done by Dr. Michael Lyon, a Canadiandoctor trained in functional medicine, revealed that more than 40% ofchildren with ADHD had parasites.
