(where the knot in balloon can be the urethra) • Purchase Incontinence pads Depends, Tena, or Harmonie small, regular, super Men’s

triangle pad helps post prostate leakage • Demonstrate absorbency by pouring ½ cup yellow coloured water (food colouring)

onto incontinence pad and demo that it does not leak

• What's one thing you will start doing after this talk?

• What's one thing you will stop doing after this talk?

• What's one thing you will change after this talk?

• What's one thing you'll do today or this week because of what you have just learned?

Self-Test: Paying Attention

• As we get older it takes us more time to react. • We need to focus on what we are doing.

Questions: Never Sometimes Always

I try to do only one thing at a time when moving around

I plan ahead

I take time to get things done

I am able to ask for help

When I am tired I stop what I am doing and take a rest.

Adapted from Robson, E., Edwards, Dr. J., & Howell, Dr J. (1996). A Guide for Seniors to Assess Their Risks for Falling: Steady as You Go. Capital Health Authority, Public Health Services.

Tips:

Stop one thing before you start another. Do one thing at a time Plan ahead You save time if you slow down Ask for help when you need it. Ask again if people forget; they usually

want to help.

Self-Test: Risky Behaviours

• Some people enjoy taking risks. As you age, the chance of injury increases from risky behaviour

This exercise will help you recognize what habits or attitudes may put you at risk for a fall.

Questions: Never Sometimes Always

I climb on the furniture when things are beyond my reach.

I ask for help with awkward and heavy items.

I ask for help when I am sick.

I test myself to see if I can still do the things I could in the past.

Adapted from Robson, E., Edwards, Dr. J. & Howell, Dr J. (1996). A Guide for Seniors to Assess Their Risks for Falling: Steady as You Go. Capital Health Authority, Public Health Services.

Tips:

Store things you use often on easy-to-reach shelves Use sturdy steps with a handrail for support to reach high places If both your hands are full you are more at risk for injury if you fall Ask for help or use a cart with wheels to carry things Ask for help when you are sick, as you may be weaker than you think

Make wise choices, prevent a fall
