This is an excerpt from chapter 22 of the book Radiative Heat Transfer by Michael Modest. It goes over a fundamental example of 1D radiation in participating media in a non-equilibrium state to begin. The P1 method is shown with the corresponding solution equations and the algorithm to code them is described.
