JENNIFER POLACHEKPublisher
Publishers NoteSpring 2013
I am so proud to be a part of this inaugural issue of Modern
Luxurys Interiors California. e entire state has so much to o er in
terms of design, architecture and inspiration for your home, and
were excited to combine Angeleno Interiors and Riviera Interiors
into one new, gorgeous magazine.
In this rst issue, our team of writers, editors and
photographers did an incredible job of highlighting all aspects of
design, from residential interiors to architecture and commercial
spaces. You can thumb through pages and nd a Corona del Mar
barn-style abode in In House Home Lofted Aspirations, seriously
high design at e Ritz-Carlton Residences, Lake Tahoe, in In House
Realty Peak Chic! or our cover home, art collector Byron Meyers
high-rise penthouse overlooking the San Francisco Bay (Artful
Living).
Theyre all stunning examples of the Golden States design scene.
Another fabulous example of our prowess: WestWeek in Los Angeles.
It seems the whole city was focused on this extraordinary event.
Everyone descended upon the Paci c Design Center for three days of
events, conferences and speeches. is was my rst year participating
and I was honored to host and moderate the nal keynote panel, From
Exotic Villas to Designer Automobiles: Cultivating and Catering to
a World-Class Clientele. e panel included luxury real estate broker
Mauricio Umansky, superyacht and estate interior designer Yvonne
Colacion, famed Malibu architect Doug Burdge of Burdge &
Associates Architects Inc. and senior designer for BMW DesignWorks
USA Nick Gronenthal. Holly Hunt hosted the post-event reception,
and the whole day was exhilarating.
As if I didnt feel lucky enough to be surrounded by those
industry elite for the lecture, I was also invited to WestWeeks
annual Stars of Design awards dinner, where I had the privilege to
sit with the 2013 honorees. During dinner, we received a terri c
surprise: the opportunity to attend a private preview of Stefan
Sagmeisters new exhibit, e Happy Show, at MOCA at the PDC. Its a
must-see this summer for anyone who loves interacting with art.
Another exhibition I cant wait to check out is Paci c Standard Time
Presents: Modern Architecture in L.A. at e Getty. If you want the
inside scoop, we give you a preview in our In House Culture story e
Need for Structure.
In addition to these stunning California homes, designers and
design events, we couldnt leave you wondering where to nd all this
great home decor. So weve gathered all the shopping scoop across
the state in In House Shops Make Room. We get a look at Maria
Barrys new Rancho Santa Fe store, then head to the O.C. to check
out new o erings from Robert | Westley, Brown Jordan and the Design
Within Reach agship before ending up at Hudson Grace in San
Francisco.
You can count on Interiors California to keep you posted on all
the design happenings across our beautiful state. In between
issues, if youre curious about upcoming events, be sure to visit
modernluxury.com/interiors-california. Additionally, our smartphone
and iPad applications are available for download any time youre
craving a design x. We hope you enjoy this relaunch as much as we
have had creating it, and if you have any suggestions, ideas or
just want to tell us how great it looks, drop me a line at
[email protected].

BETH WEITZMANVice President of Editorial
A Note From the VP of EditorialSpring 2013
Talk about the arrivals of spring! Clipping the heels of a new
season is the launch of Modern Luxurys Interiors Californiaa fully
refreshed intermixing that folds the best of Angeleno Interiors and
Riviera Interiors into one new publication highlighting the de
rigueur interior style of the entire Golden State. Although
interiors-focused, the presentation of this new formatan ambitious
undertaking that not only marks the magazines editorial ethos going
forward and captures a wide array of design scenes statewideis also
something of an homage to Californias storied exteriors. North to
south, the states diverse slate of milieusfrom arid desert and
windswept f latlands to wine-country estuary and the snowy peaks of
the High Sierrainspire both emerging and established design talents
to translate these settings into striking residential and
commercial spaces for all of us to enjoy. Although this ambitious
relaunch promises a much wider reach than its predecessors, its
goal remains to showcase the manifestations of these unique
interior perspectives, products and projects. In this, I must say
that weve succeeded. Not only does this issue explore familiar
stomping grounds, such as the urbanscapes of SoCal, it veers north
to San Francisco and travels the road further up to the now-thawing
Truckee, where, at The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe, Bay Area-based
tastemaker Jay Je ers turned his wholly original eye to three
custom show homes now up for grabs at the hotels
newly introduced The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Lake Tahoe in our
story In-House Realty Peak Chic! I think youll nd their truly
individual looka natty ri on traditional lodge stylea re ection of
the eclectic design inclinations of many Californians. Count Tyler
Dawson among this group. Recently settled in Venice, the
interior-design star, whom House Beautiful touted among their
designers to watch, is bringing San Francisco sensibilities to the
Southland with a slew of in-progress design projects. Read all
about this devoted mix-and-matcher in Interior Monologue e New
Girl. These are just two design darlings making California a more
beautiful place to live. But you need not be a designer to
appreciate good taste. Take Cesar Millan, who lets us peek into his
abode in In-House Home Cesars Palace, or Hollywood elite couple
Eric Gold and Marcy Kaplan, who give us a view of their
just-renovated gorgeous oceanside home in our feature Making Waves.
Sharing the spotlight with our features are projects in a few of
our other favorite Cali cities; among them a white-washed abode in
Newport Beach, an artistic dream in San Diego and a high-rise
stunner in San Francisco. In addition, we also bring you some
fabulous new hotel lobbies across the state, present Fisher
Weismans rst book and take you inside the red carpet scene for the
best fetes in town. So, yes, weve shed our skinbut it is spring.
What better time to arrive in style? [email protected]

BURNING QUESTION
If walls could talk, these would have a few things to say about
the newest trends in wallpaper design. Splurge on the latest fab
collab between industry icon Maya Romanoff and starchitect David
Rockwell. Their Groove-V collection ($55/yard) is Cali-inspired
with three far-out patterns: Tubular, Neat-o and Out of
Sight. The patterns and deep emboss command attention, while the
texture rewards upon closer examination. For once, its polite to
stare. Then, after fi ve years of R&D, Romanoffs Ajiro Vineyard
collection ($100-$120/yard) also launches this month. Imagine an
inlaid wood veneer turned wallpaper. Made of microthin, paulownia
wood on a paper backing, it can wrap columns or fi t into corners
with ease. Both will be on display at Pacifi c Design Center in
April. Donghia Showroom, 8687 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles,

DESIGN TWOFER
e big, plush, red leather booths were always the most coveted
seats at the original Hamburger Hamlet on the Sunset Strip, so when
Adam Goldstein of Studio Collective was tasked with turning the
space into a rustic-chic, Tuscan-inspired restaurant for the
Innovative Dining Group (Sushi Roku, BOA Steakhouse, Soleto), the
rst thing people asked about were the booths. ey had their own
lore, Goldstein says. But the Hamlet people stripped the place. ere
was no opportunity to allude to what was here before. Instead, the
new RivaBella is a gorgeous open space with a retractable roof, a
patio strewn with cream-colored booths, dimly lit lanterns, tiled
oors, replaces, trees and other greenery. It feels like youre in a
villa
set somewhere along the Italian coast or countryside. eres even
a brick-walled wine cave o to the side, which serves as an extra
dining room. Next door, the design team is creating an entirely
separate Chinese restaurant, Chi Lin, which has a completely di
erent vibe: sleeker, darker. e hope is that theyll both last as
long as the Hamlet did. To stand the test of time, Goldstein says
they looked to handcrafted detailsfurniture and things like
tiebacks for the draperynot trends. (Anything that shows the touch
of the human hand.) Taking over a place that lasted that long wasnt
a direct inspiration in terms of design, he adds, but in terms of
longevity for sure. Lesley Balla

When I see a white rug in the master bedroom, I have to ask:
What were you thinking? Im so disciplined about the dogs always
being clean before they enter the house, it doesnt matter what
color the interiors are.
You also have a white bedspread. Do the dogs sleep with
you?Junior and Al e sleep in my room, but not on my bed. I dont
like dog hair on the bed. ats my personal space. ey dont have to be
on me and next to me at that moment.
What attracted you to this particular house? When I walked in, it
was like, Welcome to your house. Everything was in the right place.
ere was the right color furniture, the right owers, the right
frame, the right desk. Its de nitely my style, even though I never
had white furniture in my life. As a Mexican, Im more used to
colors like fuchsia or yellow or turquoise. I never would have
picked gray walls, but I love them. Its as if youre always in a
meditation zone.
Does this house have dog-friendly materials?Hardwood oors.
Carpeting creates more dirt and smell.
Fill in the blank. Your favorite room is _____: e garage. Like a
typical guy, I go there to x things and to work with plants.
Since this house came already furnished, what did you add to
make it more personal?Crystals, orchids. Im always bringing in new
owers. A huge painting of Mayans, and, of course, my dogs. When you
add an animal, they have an amazing ability to make everything look
beautiful.

Of course someone who was on the iconic series Dog Whisperer
would have a house that speaks softly. Cesar Millan fell in love
with the light interiors of his new 3,800-square-foot Studio City

Spellbinding MindsIn their fi rst book, decorators Andrew Fisher
and Jeffry Weisman conjure up enchanting interiors inside a Nob
Hill pied--terre, a Palm Springs poolside retreat, a SoMa loft and
even a Sonoma tree house. By Elizabeth Varnell
when the Bay area-based design rm fisher weisman comes up in
conversation, san francisco socials inevitably ask, have you seen
their apartment on nob hill? now, 13 years after Jeffry weisman and
andrew fisher merged their individual practices, a cionados can see
images of the glamorous pied--terre in a 1920s louis Xvi-style
building where they live, as well as other storied projects, in
their rst book, Artful Decoration ($50, the monticelli press).
weisman, who grew up in encino and studied design and later
business at stanford university before taking my avocation and
making it a vocation, says he seeks to create balance in rooms.
fisher, who hails from ann arbor, mich., and learned sculpting and
metalsmithing at California College of the arts, treats objects as
canvases, creating fantasy furniture covered in shells. here, they
discuss their obsessions and California sensibilities.
Your friend, decorator Tony Duquette, was known for his fearless
and detailed work in L.A. and San Francisco. When did your love
affair with hand-decorating begin? AnDREW FISHER: I have always
loved to use my hands. As a child I was encouraged by two very
talented parents to always be making things: knitting, sewing,
painting and even reupholstering our living room furniture.
What materials are you each drawn to? JEFFRy WEISMAn: An
enormous array of natural items including stones, leathers, metals,
and man-made ceramics and glass. We are truly kids in a candy store
when it comes to selecting materials. AF: It changes daily. My
brain is completely visual and my eyes are very, very busy at all
times.
What inspires you to devise such captivating fi xtures? AF: My
strong education in art with majors in both sculpture and
metalsmithing. So it was a natural progression to make jewelry for
houses, which is exactly what I think chandeliers are.

Architectural Digest s Margaret Russell writes in the books
foreword that a chandelier in your hands becomes an apparition with
gilded branches. How long have you known her? JW: Margaret and I
became friends in 1989 in High Point, when we were both kids. Shes
known Andrew for 17 years, as long as I have. I feel like we grew
up together.
How does your trainingat Skidmore, Owings & Merrill under
Charles Pfister and then at Gensler under Orlando
Diaz-Azcuyinfluence your projects? JW: Those great talents gave me
discipline, a strong eye for detail and a great appreciation for
planning. Working side by side with architects taught me how to
easily work on paper, to see and know what a space will be when its
realized. How does the location affect your approach to projects?
JW: We take into account the light, climate, and our clients taste
and lifestyle as we tailor our concepts. In addition, the talent of
the craftsmen in all these regions expands the range of wonderful
elements we can create.
How has a West Coast sensibility played into the rooms you
create? JW: The fresh, casual sophistication encourages our blend
of classical design and fantasy, nurturing our passion to create
rooms as enduring as they are unexpected. While living inside,
people here often want to feel outside, so the flow of windows,
doors and rooflines matters.
Describe the interiors of the tree house that became a guest
cottage nestled in a pair of fir trees in Sonoma. AF: People would
fall in love with the rustic redwood exterior just to be startled
when the double doors opened to gold upholstered walls, gold
puddled draperies, gold chandeliers. It really was one of the most
magical places weve ever created, and one of the most fun.
ElEgAnt IngEnuItyClockwise from left: Decorators Andrew Fisher
(left) and Jeffry Weisman; Fisher, who calls tony Duquette a
kindred spirit, channeled the famed California decorator to create
a gilded steel twig light fixture and a daybed with trompe loeil
finishes in a Sonoma tree house; louis XV sconces flank the doorway

painting hangs near Maison Jansen chairs.

the highlights of his global CV: working on personal friend Giorgio

Make RoomFrom San Francisco to Rancho Santa Fethe Cali shopping
scoop.
We live outdoors year-round here, says Maria Barry, lounging
under an umbrella in the new outdoor showroom of her Rancho Santa
Fe store, Le Dimora. e A-list interior designer, known for
decorating the homes of nearly every Charger and Padre in town, has
stocked a chic array of alfresco-ready items in the sprawling new
space, from custom umbrellas to modern outdoor carpeting (all the
rage, she says). e Rancho set is known for its proclivity toward
heavy Tuscan furniture and oversized couches that ll their
extra-large homes. Were trying to get them to change that and
lighten up
a bit, says Barry, who lives nearby in a white-on-white
contemporary house that she shares with her husband and three
children. Barry was recently tapped by the crew of e Real
Housewives, which has been scouting the area for a Rancho Santa
Fe-based show. She politely declined, citing her busy schedule. For
the last two years, Barry has been designing a contemporary coastal
six-bedroom house in Greenwich, Conn., not to mention her
burgeoning showroom. We started at 1,500 square feet, now were at
15,000. Del Rayo Village Center, 16089 San Dieguito Road, Rancho

The Need for StructureBack for more, Pacifi c Standard Times
newest initiative fi nally gives Los Angeles architecture its
comeuppance.
By Marissa Gluck
Last years Paci c Standard Time, a Getty-led collaboration with
more than 60 local cultural institutions, mounted a nearly
comprehensive celebration of Los Angeles postwar art up until 1980,
putting L.A.s art scene on the global map. But it seemed like the
citys rich architectural legacy was given short shrift next to all
the chatter about the work of artists Ed Ruscha and John
Baldessari. ankfully, Paci c Standard Time Presents: Modern
Architecture in L.A. (paci cstandardtimepresents.org) is a welcome
sequel. e initiative takes a look at the citys contributions to
design, from its massive freeways to kitschy co ee shops to the
humble tract house. With 17 exhibitions and many more accompanying
programs and events from April through July, architecture
enthusiasts can delve into the work of modernists like Schindler
and Neutra or todays starchitects like Frank Gehry and om Mayne. A
few dont-miss highlights and images youll see along the way:

the cornerstone of the initiative. According to curators Wim de Wit
(left) and Christopher J. Alexander, the shows goal is similar to
last years PST. Architecture is a very important part of the
culture of this city. We wanted to show what was happening here in
the 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond, says de Wit. e Getty aims to uncover
lesser-known gems, like the work of architect Claude Beelman.
Beelman designed many of downtowns best buildings, including the
Superior Oil Company building (now the downtown Standard Hotel) and
the Eastern Columbia Building. eyre hidden in plain sight, says
Alexander. We drive by them every day [and never notice them]. e
exhibits scope and ambition is far-reaching, embracing SoCals
complexity. Its not just a show of architectural highlights, says
Alexander. Corporate headquarters, oil re neries and electrical
transmission towers are all worthy of consideration. Were revealing
how L.A. became a lab for architectural innovation and
