An Inconvenient Truth Watch the clip and note down any questions or

arguments you would raise.

Melting polar ice caps

Sea level rise

Arguments against humans being the reason for climate change. Misleading argument 1 : The Earth's climate is always

changing and this is nothing to do with humans.

Misleading argument 2 : Carbon dioxide only makes up a small part of the atmosphere and so cannot be responsible for global warming.

Misleading argument 3 : Rises in the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are the result of increased temperatures, not the other way round.

Misleading argument 4 : Observations of temperatures taken by weather balloons and satellites do not support the theory of global warming.

Page 7: Modern Lifestyles And Pollution

Arguments (continued) Misleading argument 5 : Computer models which predict

the future climate are unreliable and based on a series of assumptions.

Misleading argument 6 : It's all to do with the Sun - for example, there is a strong link between increased temperatures on Earth with the number of sunspots on the Sun.

Misleading argument 7 : The climate is actually affected by cosmic rays.

Misleading argument 8 : The scale of the negative effects of climate change is often overstated and there is no need for urgent action.

What are your thoughts? The issue of global warming has been a major political

talking point for at least the last 10 years and it will continue with no obvious end. You need to be aware of the arguments and have your own opinions on the matter.

What are

your

thoughts

and why?

The Greenhouse Effect Using the information from the clip draw a diagram

that shows the ‘normal’ and positive Greenhouse Effect and then the ‘Human’ and detrimental Greenhouse Effect.

Always remember the Greenhouse effect occurs naturally!

How does global warming happen?

Page 12: Modern Lifestyles And Pollution

Human activity is creating more of these

greenhouse gases so less heat is able to escape

into space. This is causing the earth to warm up.

Heat from the sun

passes through the

earth’s atmosphere and

warms the earth.

Some heat is reflected

back from the earth into

space. But some of the

heat is trapped by

greenhouse gases. These

include water, vapour

carbon dioxide and

methane which occur

naturally on earth and stop

the earth getting too cold. Make your own version of this labelled diagram

Global Warming What are the main causes of global warming?

Emissions from cars = CO2

Emissions from factories = Acid Rain

Household waste = Not Biodegradable

Industrial waste = Chemical waste harmful to nature

Lack of recycling = Methane from landfills

Why do we allow these things to continue?

Transport of people and goods

‘Throwaway society’

Laziness

Page 15: Modern Lifestyles And Pollution

Effects of Global Warming Along with the obvious effect of a raise in temperature,

many other effects can be noted

Smog from cars make it hard to breathe

Chemicals from factories create acid rain

Household waste creates methane

Factory waste can be chemical or radioactive and lasts for many years in the soil and water of the local area.

Which of these do you think is the biggest concern and why?

Demonstration - Global Warming 1. What are the main causes of global warming?

2. Who do you feel is mainly responsible for global warming? Do you think we all have a responsibility?

3. Why do we allow these things to continue?

4. Why might a Christian be concerned about global warming? Try to the key words Creation and Stewardship in your answer and a quote from the front.

thought about more than one point of view.
