Model Loggerhead Sea Turtle These turtles are the superstars of Bald Head Island! Loggerheads make up the vast majority of the sea turtles that nest on our beaches. This model is about average size of the nesting mothers that make their way up Bald Head’s beaches, around 3-4 feet long and weighing in at about 300-350 pounds! They are called Loggerheads because of their large heads and powerful jaws to crunch on marine invertebrates or plants. They are known to host an entire ecosystem on their backs made up of barnacles and bioluminescent plankton. Loggerheads are currently listed as a threatened species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and are protected by law. Our Sea Turtle Protection Program is dedicated to conserving each nest that is laid on BHI! If you are interested in seeing a live turtle, ask about our Turtle Walks at the information desk! Only use red light on the beaches at night!
