Letter from the Editor

When looking for inspiration this year, “beauty” came up quite often

and has become the central theme for this issue, a theme which we once

again have explored through several photo series.

Two of our concepts center around the beauty side of a fashion

shoot, the hair and makeup. One takes over-the-top makeup looks and

places the models in profile to see a dimension of the face that is not often

showcased. The other grew from New Yorkers’ obsession with the bright

red lip and exploded into an entire concept driven by the salacious color.

Our other shoots took the issue of beauty in a slightly more abstract

meaning. These are about finding the beauty in people, the beauty that

comes from family and friendships, from truly knowing someone. We deal

with searching for normal in a city like New York and with a loss that was

felt much closer than those we examined in our last issue. In dealing with

these issues, we have tried to find the beauty about them that makes them

so impactful and ubiquitous.

When someone speaks of fashion or fashion photography, the word

“beauty” can be charged with accusation or resentment for the fashion

world’s incredibly high and sometimes unrealistic standards for what quali-

fies as beautiful. The team at MOD believes that the definition of beauty

extends so much further than what most would assume upon those in the

fashion world. We see beauty as that which moves you, that which in-

spires you, that which has the power to change you or your perspective

on the world.

I hope that you find the beauty in the photo series we have pro-

duced this year. I hope that something here inspires you.

Sincerely,

Kendall Brezinski

THE TIMEKEEPER

In October of 2012, the NYU community lost John Votta, better known as “The Timekeeper.” The stu-dents of New York University would quickly be-come familiar with Mr. Votta as they passed him standing at the corner of Washington Place and University Place at Washington Square Park as he proclaimed as if he were a town crier how long students had until the next class period began while watching for traffic that might harm the hur-rying students. In response to the feeling of loss that swept the NYU community, we sought to pay tribute to Mr. Votta in this issue of MOD. We have done so by finding an NYU student whose personality and style is as interesting and individual as was Mr. Votta. For this series, we asked NYU Tisch student Patrick Burr to style himself in a way he felt ex-press his personal style. We asked Patrick to be as much of a character as we know him to be in each photo so as to best capture who he is. Donning watches by Diesel, we travelled with him to some of the most famous time pieces of New York City.
