The government has said that the country’s five leading telecom operators understated revenue by nearly `11,000 crore during

two financial years and have been asked to pay additional licence fees.

The understatement of revenue was detected during special audits conducted for 2006-07 and 2007-08. Telecom operators are required to share a certain percentage of their revenue with the government as licence fees and an understatement would result in lower payments to the Centre.

According to government officials, Reliance had understated revenue by over ̀ 3,400 crore, followed by Tata (over `3,150 crore), Bharti, Vodafone, and Idea. The statement came even as it emerged that telecom firms owe the government over ̀ 9,600 crore as outstanding amount for spectrum usage charges and licence fees.

Bharti Airtel owes `3,275 for spectrum usage charges and licence fee followed by BSNL (`2,093 crore). Reliance owes the third highest amount of `1,656 crore. The government has imposed penalties of `2,200 crore on operators for outstanding usage charges and licence fee.

It’s Advantage WiFi for IndiaWiFi Hotspots are springing up fast in India and this is set to deliver better user experience on the network side

Owing to the exponential g r o w t h o f d a t a traf f ic on wireless

cellular infrastructures over the last several years, WiFi is one technology which has emerged as a big winner in the Indian region. It has been matched or even surpassed by a phenomenal increase in Wi-Fi traffic originating from Wi-Fi-enabled smartphones and tablets. All this is contributing towards better wifi infrastructure in the form of hot spots.

Hence, if we look at the wifi scenario in India, from individual homes and workplaces, to coffee shops, retail stores, hotels and airports (and yes, even on the planes), Wi-Fi hotspots are springing up all over continuing to proliferate and are becoming ubiquitous for semi-nomadic data connectivity that today’s mobility driven user is asking for.

As the demand generation for Wi-Fi based connectivity lies primarily in its availability and relatively easy configuration, the use of Wi-Fi comes with the burden of:

• S h a r e d ( u n l i c e n s e d ) spectrum

• No guarantees for network performance and QoS

• A potentially high price (for example, daily or hourly fees)

• The need to manage access configuration for many Wi-Fi hot spots through protocols and passwordsIt is interesting to note

that if we look back a bit, Wi-Fi hotspots have been “dark corners” on coverage maps of mobile operators because at these hotspots the operators start losing visibility into their customers: insight into their connectivity and enhanced communication preferences.

At these dark corners, the end-user data services riding over Wi-Fi start traversing alternative network infrastructures that do not always belong to wireless operators.

The same situation is also valid for the wireline operators, including cable operators and multiple service operators (MSOs). While their service offering has been driven by large bandwidth interconnectivity with static, big-screen requirements (Internet over DSL or cable, IPT V at home, enterprise connectivity), they also see the opportunity in the “smartphone revolution” and would like to capitalize on it.

With Wi-Fi’s maturity in both technology evolution and standards development (for example, MIMO and IEEE 802.11u), wireless, wireline and converged operators alike are looking at Wi-Fi technology as an option to increase their service and business reach.

Mobile service providers and wireless operators view Wi-Fi as another wireless technology that can augment their macro and small cell networks with af fordable coverage and capacity, and with universal acceptance. Wireline providers

view Wi-Fi as a new opportunity to light up the ends of their last miles to attract more customers and also to leverage their overall network for reselling and wholesaling opportunities. Obviously, the ability to deal with unlicensed spectrum has an additional appeal for all of these service providers and network operators.

Over the past recent years, many different approaches have been considered, examined and even deployed to allow the integration of Wi-Fi hotspots into wireless and wireline networks. While these approaches have been somewhat standardized, they st i l l represent many different options, and often they mix different technologies to ensure the end-device connectivity.

A s a r e s u l t , t h e r e i s increased management and billing/charging complexity. In practice, many instances of operator-owned Wi-Fi rollouts have resul ted in paral le l n e t w o r k i n f r a s t r u c t u r e s with duplication of separate networks as well as subscriber/policy and traffic management systems.

Until recently, standards-based approaches for carrier Wi-

Fi have been based on treating WLAN (Wi-Fi) as untrusted access and have required the use of dedicated network elements which otherwise might not have been needed.

There are few or no changes in end-user equipment (mobile terminals) because this approach replaces the large-scale IPsec connect iv i ty requi rement between end-user devices and a gateway (potentially millions), per previous standards, with manageable scaling of secure tunnels between access points (APs) and a gateway (potentially thousands) using Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) or IPsec.

With protocol suppor t on the WLAN for interfacing Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) servers, t h i s m o d e l a l l ow s e a s y integration with a network operator’s billing and charging systems while ensuring AP-cellular inter-mobility. As we move ahead, there are a lot of wifi based infrastructure solutions which are likely to compliment today’s operator regime and all this is surely going to increase user-friendliness and multiple device adoptions within the user community.

Say Hello to Phablet

Phablets Set to Rule India’s Gadget Space

The new term that is buzzing the entire tech industry is Phablet – this is of course

a combination of a tablet and a phone. They say, ‘’phablets are the next smartphone’’. What is a phablet? Just mix up with the words Phone and Tablet; you will get the result as phablet.

Phablet is a device which has the screen size ranging from 5 to 7 inches. Some call it a hybrid cessation of both generation

devices, which will take over the entire world to ransom in next few years.

In simple words, Size of Phone < Size of phablet < Size of Tablet. However, choosing the best phablet out of the many choices, is not an easy task. So we are presenting a list of best phablets available in India.

High-price Android phablets

Samsung Galaxy Note N7000:

Samsung Galaxy Note doesn’t need any introduction. Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 just took the entire industry with pleasant surprise with 5.3 inches screen size and stylus also branded as S-Pen. Beneath comes a dual-core 1.4 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor that breathes the life into this ingenious device.

It comes with Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread version. Camera quality is just awesome and you can capture best moments of your

life with 8 MP camera. If you are like me, who keeps on doing chit-chat with friends, then Galaxy Note N7000, is perfect for you as it provides the talk time of around 26 hours.

Samsung has thrown whatever it could with the first version of Galaxy Note, and their handwork speaks for itself. Samsung also equipped with some of applications of its own to lure more customers. Galaxy Note N700 is priced around Rs.29,990.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2: Samsung Galaxy Note 2 was released to upgrade the line of already popular Note series phablet. Galaxy

Note 2 has got the screen size of 5.5 inches and Quad-core 1.6 GHz Cortex-A9 processor. It also comes with upgraded 2GB of RAM. No change has been noticed in the camera and like Note I, this one also comes with 8 MP camera. A small change has been made in front facing camera though. It has a 1.9MP front facing camera which is capable of taking HD videos as well.

The huge difference can be noticed with the S-Pen design and applications designed to cooperate delicately with the new Note 2. Smart gesture, air view, multi

windows operation, S note are a few more additions to the previous system. Besides that, handwriting recognition system is smart enough to detect even worst handwriting. Samsung has ramped up its position with such smart software integration.

It is destined to repeat the success of Galaxy Note I, and initial response from the user and sales figure hints at the same. You should be ready to shed anything in vicinity of Rs.37,999 to buy Note 2.

LG Optimus Vu: With the screen size of 5 inch and a bunch of amazing features, this

one, from the house of LG, is shining at the very first place. Powerful 1.5 GHz quad core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich version speak about the reason of being this phablet at the top. With good display quality and lightweight, it surely tops on the wish list of many. 8 MP camera is quite enough to attract the photography freaks to try their hands on it.

50GB free cloud service, that you get with LG Optimus Vu, is an extra plus point. It’s klutzy 4:3 aspect ratio makes it squarish and looks somewhat ugly. Even, the cosmetics are nothing to boast about for LG. The plasticky body ensures that you will not fall in love at first sight. However, keeping all criticism aside, the LG Optimus Vu is definitely the powerful device that comes with a nice price tag. It is selling like a hot cake in Korea, which has forced them to release its successor in Optimus Vu 2.

Having known Indian crowds well, one can say that LG may not be able to repeat the same success by the likes of Galaxy Note, but that doesn’t make it less enticing. It is just that Indian crowd like to cling to their favorite

brand more often (probably, this is the reason why Nokia has still survived in the Indian market). Indians are known as the most loyal customers, and if LG manages to win their heart, there will be no looking for them in next few years. It is currently available online at around Rs.29,499.

Low-price phabletsMicromax Canvas A100 is also a budget

phablet. With 5-inch screen size, Canvas A100 shines at the top of the budget line of Android phablets. The 1GHz scorpion processor and 512 MB RAM processing muscle empowers it.

The pre-loaded Ice Cream Sandwich ensures the next best operating system in the world, which can be upgraded to the latest version. It is a dual SIM android phablet. A 5MP camera is, although not the best offers different image capturing and video experience. The secondary camera is measly 0.3MP, but you couldn’t ask anything more for 10,000 INR budget range.

The internal memory of 2GB can be

expanded up to 32GB through a MicroSD card. Micromax has also successfully launched its successor A110 Canvas 2 with 1GHz dual core processor and 8MP main camera.

iBall Andi 5C: Although relatively new in the smartphone segment, iBall has had success in releasing some niche specific smartphone and featured phone in India. Their new offering Andi 5C is equally enticing. Equipped with Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich, the device carries 1GHz A9 Cortex processor and 512MB of RAM. Similar to Micromax Canvas A100, it is a dual SIM phablet.

The IPS display is known to offer better quality images, but the resolution of 480 x 800 kills all the fun. The device also relatively bulky with 216gms of weight and battery of 2,300mAh. A 5.0MP auto focus camera delivers decent result, but nothing exceptional here. iBall has done an exceptional job in making the device while keeping the low price tag in mind. Andi 5C is available for `12,499 in Indian market.

Spice Stellar Horizon: With the 5 inches screen in Spice Stellar Horizon bid its place in the phablets list. It comes with 1 GHz dual core MT6577 Onboard processor, 512 MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage which could be expanded to 32GB. The dual SIM phone looks good and feels solid in the hand, but don’t expect it to compete with high quality devices. The MediaTek dual core processor was a big setback for many of us, as previously it was supposed to run on the Snapdragon S4 processor.

There is also no point of comparing both processor muscle power, as Spice is designed to satisfy lower food chain. Quite similar to Canvas A100, it carries 5MP shooter and 0.3MP front facing camera to serve video calling functionality. It is available in the vicinity of `11,999.

Recently, Karbonn announced Karbonn A24 phablet with 4.5 inch screen and 1.2GHz dual core processor. However, we have skipped including it from the list, since the list is designed keeping 5-inch display in the mind. Even, Zync has launched dual-SIM Cloud Z5 phablet in India at Rs.9,490, but we doubt that it will available in all local stores. It has 4GB inbuilt memory, 1GHz processor and 512MB RAM. It also offers decent 8MP camera.

As being put by Sandeep Arya, Managing Director, Amtrak. “Just like any new invention, the phablets seem to create a good amount of attraction to the existing tablet users. Sandeep Arya, Managing Director, Amtrak

“We are big believers in the Phablet segment. We believe that this will be the dominating segment in the tablet industry. The key reason for this is that internet access is the killer app for tablets. Huawei goes Bullish on Phablets

Q) Phablets is one big segment which has emerged quite well in the market. What is your take on this segment and how is it likely to move ahead?

With several number of players entering the smartphone market, we have seen lot of happening and the latest being Phablets. In today’s era a phone is just not limited to talking. It has gone beyond and has increased to other factors like increasing internet usage, consumption of more visual content on mobile devices, and the need for large form factor.

Phablets, device possessing features of both smartphones and tablets as they have voice calling capabilities, faster processor, larger battery, more storage, and high resolution displays of a smartphone along with larger screen sizes of a tablet varying between 5-7 inches, is becoming a preferred choice for the customers. Being a multi-purpose device, which can be used as a camera, audio and video recorder and allowing access to the internet not only to browse social media but also to perform business related computation will surely stay in the market.

Q) How many phablet models do you have at present? What are your plans in this direction?

Last year during Diwali, we launched the ultra-portable and sleek Huawei MediaPad 7 Lite. Weighing just 370g, the tablet comes in a metal unibody shell powered by Google Android 4.0 and a Cortex A8 1.2GHz processor. Its super-clear 7-inch 1024 x 600 IPS multi-touch 1080p high-definition display is complemented by its 3G cellular voice function. As MediaPad 7 Lite allows an easier way to stay in touch with its 3G and WiFi cellular, SMS and MMS capabilities we can call it as a phablet.

Further to our plans in this direction, we launched Ascend Mate at CES 2013. This smart phone comes with a large 6.1 inch HD Magic touch screen placed on a smooth and light body. It offers the optimal experience for gaming, reading text heavy web pages, and also viewing photos and videos. Its compact design with highest screen-to-body ratio is also a huge step ahead. The best point is that this phone has is its processor and battery life, it has a 4050 mAh battery and 1.5 GHz quadcore processor. With QPC and ADRX smart power-saving technology, the smart phone provides up to two days of ordinary usage on a single charge and it has fast battery charging capability, The Ascend Mate runs on Android 4.1and also has a nice 8MP camera that can also record HD video.

At a time when convergence is ruling the roost, a new category of convergence friendly devices is emerging, it is phablets. Global device manufacturer Huawei is positioning itself as a phablet provider with an array of devices targeted for the end consumer segment. Mobility spoke with Victor Shanxin, President, Huawei Device India on its present focus and future plans.

Q) What kind of trends is likely to take this segment forward?Phablets are becoming the preferred choice for customers as

they offer life-like viewing experience to access rich content. It is becoming a multi-purpose electronic gadget, which can be used as a camera, audio and video recorder. The latest trend to watch out for Phablets is its great future prospects because of user interface improvements websites and apps and also larger screen which allow more interactions between apps as well as more gestures for navigating the phone resulting in less eye strain and better videos display.

Q) What would be the size of this market of phablets in India and how is it moving ahead?

According to a report by firm ABI Research, almost 83 million phablets were shipped in 2012, an increase of 4,504 per cent from 2011. ABI Research projects that more than 150 million phablets will be shipped in 2013.The report also says, the bulk of phablets will be shipped in the 4.6 to 5-inch screen category. It is anticipated that four out of every five phablets shipped will be in the mentioned segment. It is forecasted that the phablet shipments will grow gradually from 2014 onwards, and only around 25 per cent of smartphones shipments in 2018 will be of the phablet genre. ABI analyst has also pointed out that phablets are more likely to eat into the tablet market size.

Q) What would be your market share in this segment and what are your plans?

Globally, Huawei want to be top 3 device brand for the next 4 years. In the phablet category, we already launched mediapad 7 inch tablet, Ascend D2 and Ascend mate.

stage. It is expected to come out in its full form by the later part of this year. At present, we have only tablets in our product portfolio. We will be launching our range of tablets in the coming month. In the next quarter, we plan to launch our dedicated series of tablets for specific audiences, which will be packed with suitable applications and features for the dedicated use – such as, Education, Travel, Health, etc. Surely, in the coming quarter, we will be bringing out something in the phablet market, keeping in view the consumers’ demands and requirements. This is too early a stage to speak anything about it,” he added.

According to Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO, Datawind, “We are big believers in the Phablet segment. We believe that this will be the dominating segment in the tablet industry. The key reason for this is that internet access is the killer app for tablets. Since WiFi based broadband connectivity is very sparsely available, the key to growth of tablets is mobile connectivity. We currently have two models in this segment:

UbiSlate 7C+ (MRP Rs. 4,999) UbiSlate 7CZ (MRP Rs. 5,999)Both are 7” screen models with multi-

touch capacitive screens, WiFi & GPRS/Edge modules. The UbiSlate 7C+ has a single front VGA camera, while the UbiSlate 7CZ has front and rear dual cameras (VGA and 2MP). Both units can be used with a mic/headphone cable or by holding to your face without a cable. The UbiSlate 7CZ also has Bluetooth connectivity. Our focus will be to introduce models in different sizes (5”, 7”, 9” and 10”) and continue driving pricing down.

Trends in PhabletsExplaining the trends in Phablet segment,

Sandeep Arya says that with the spread of Phablets, it can be predicted that mobile computing will become easier. “The size of this device is smaller, making it able to readily replace the large-sized tablets. From hand-sized computing devices to pocket-sized tele-computing device, Phablet segment would see great trends in the market,” he explains.

As being put by Suneet Tuli, affordability is going to be a key requirement for growth in this segment both for the hardware and cost of internet access. A key trend that is going to drive this segment is the quality of the internet experience. At DataWind we’ve developed a breakthrough web delivery platform on which we’ve received 18 U.S. patents covering over 1,000 claims -- resulting in a superior web experience even on standard GPRS networks,” he adds on.

Indian Tablet Scenario The overall India Tablet market recorded

HCL Goes Bullish on Cloud

Q) How do you look at Cloud Computing? How secure is the cloud environment?

Cloud computing today is a huge trend and clearly a technology for the future. It is a disruptive technology as it allows users easy access to computing resources. Today it is not only an enabler for small businesses and individual users but also accords services to enterprises at optimal costs.

With cloud computing gradually evolving, a number of vulnerability issues have also cropped up. A major concern in cloud computing that organizations have today is that of confidentiality and security as it is mainly under the maintenance and supervision of a third party. But cloud providers have also evolved to ensure that reliability and security aspects are tested from time to time so that there is no threat of data loss that can cause damage to a customer’s business. It also allows innovators and start ups to reduce cost of failure and increase the pace of innovation as there are fewer committed expenses associated with cloud computing.

increase in the growth of c loud comput ing, security needs also has to be analyzed frequently. Cloud computing over the years have gradually matured and several complex pr ivacy and confidentiality issues earlier associated with cloud computing are more or less not there in the market now. Enterprises are gradually evolving to fully leverage the benefits of the cloud, and are partnering with cloud providers. However, in order to ensure complete security, the provider must ascertain that their infrastructure is highly secure and that their clients’ data and applications are protected all the time through several proactive measures and use of best practices while the customer on the other hand, must also take proper security measures to protect their information.

Q) BYOD or (bring your own device)

is a big challenge to all the organisations today. How do you solve this issue especially when you have to secure the policies etc of your end customers.

The concept of BYOD (bring your own device) gives employees the flexibility of using their personal devices at work, is slowly gaining ground in India, driven primarily by the youth. However, data security comes as one of the biggest bane of BYOD trend as data security is directly linked to device security. While it is relatively easy to observe security protocols and processes for wired networks, it is complex for mobile devices. To ensure that data is not compromised one can follow various best practices such as monitoring and managing the device, securing and protecting corporate data etc.

Q) What are some of the big trends that are set to redefine this space of cloud and security in the year 2013 and what is your contribution going to be?

I see BYOD as a big trend in this space, however one needs to be careful about data breaches. Again as Cloud Services become popular, security technologies for cloud will also evolve and enterprises and cloud service providers alike have to focus more on identity and access issues. Cloud will also enable the Software as a Service segment to grow further.

Gaffar Market in Delhi is one of the most famous markets in India for Mobile Phones and accessories.

Previously this market was known for imported goods from electronics to apparels to toys to crockery, all at less than the market price, however, today it is primarily known as the biggest mobile set market, including mobile phone accessories and second hand mobile handsets. There are more than 3000 shops and offices, opened by retailers, resellers, distributors and vendors of mobile phones, mobile phone accessories and tablets.

It is not an exaggeration to say Gaffar Market is a well-managed mobile (white and grey) market of India. Perhaps, it is the only market where you can even expect to find

mobile phonesthat have just been launched in the USA. It is the market from where some people claimed to have bought iPhone and iPadeven before they were officially launched in India.

Mobile shoppingRecently, Gaffar Market is primarily

known for Mobile Shopping, including first hand and second hand mobiles, and mobile accessories. Even though stolen phone-set movement in Gaffar Market has affected the reputation of the market to some extent, when it comes to choosing a mobile phone—brand new or second hand---no other market in the county can provide the choice of depth, range, and price variation of Gaffar Market. In this market, you can find technicians who offer

standard troubleshooting for all types of mobile phones and other electronic gadgets.

Your bargaining skills matter in grey market

If you are going to shop in Gaffar Market – for second hand or brand new products – then keep this in mind that you have to be adept and shrewd at bargaining. Do not worry or feel shy to bargain---here shopkeepers are used to rough bargaining and they seldom get irritated. If you are buying second hand products like mobile phones then you can even reduce the first quoted price to half and then bargain. Bargaining is the best way to get perfect price from Gaffar Market.

You should also remain a bit cautious. Always cross check all functions of your

The best way would be taking with you someone who already had good experience of dealing in that market. The market always remains heavily crowded, so you need to be alert of pickpockets and thieves.

There is also a vast and decent white market

Along with unknown brands, second hands and grey market, there are also many shops in Gaffar Market that do honest business, sell reputed brands and

stick to standard procedures. In such cases, bargaining would not work much because prices are more are less fixed. If you want purchase good brand, be sure you are approaching a standard and decent seller, not duper.

There are many genuine shops and sellers as such, you should have knack to identify them. As already mentioned above, go there with somebody who had prior experience in buying in Gaffar Market. There are also several famous, reputed and standard distributors in Gaffar Market.

How to ReachGaffar Market falls under

the ambit of famous Karol Bagh. Karol Bagh is well connected from all parts of Delhi. Gaffar Market is just 1 kilometer from Karol Bagh Metro Station. Going there through Delhi Metro is the best way, unless you have your own vehicle. Get down from Metro at Karol Bagh station and ask someone about Gaffar Market or better hire a rickshaw. Virtualization Reigns Education

India’s education sector is going through a major transformation these days, this transformation is about introduction of a new set of technological innovations that are taking the segment forward. For the past 25 years, education has enjoyed a technological rollercoaster ride as the PC has moved from being a rarity to a mainstay of classrooms around the world including those in India. While many positive effects have been observed, the fact remains that education expects more from technology than it frequently gets.

However, advances in both the technology and the methods employed to deliver or implement the technology may provide answers to what we seek. While relatively new to schools, the concept of virtualization is proving itself in the business and consumer world as a hugely powerful development that is set to benefit the education sector in a positive manner.

If we talk about virtualization, it is a technique for hiding the physical characteristics of computing resources

from the way in which other systems, applications or end users interact with those resources. As a practical matter, when you get a Google map on your cell phone or when you let your PC automatically shop for the lowest price, you are using virtualization. The concept of virtualization is very broad and can be applied to devices, servers, operating systems, applications and even networks.

While the details can be technical and abstract, virtualization can have a large impact on education technology in general and the way it is delivered to students in particular. The first area is operational efficiency and related costs, and the second area is academic benefits.

A Virtual MachineA vir tual computer is a logical

representation of a computer in software. By decoupling the physical hardware from the operating system, virtualization provides more operational flexibility and increases the utilization rate of the underlying physical hardware.

Although virtualization is implemented primarily in software, many modern microprocessors now include hardware features explicitly designed to improve the efficiency of the virtualization process.

In a traditional physical computer, one instance of the operating system supports one or more application programs. In a virtualization environment, a single physical computer runs software that abstracts the physical computer’s resources so that they may be shared between multiple “virtual computers.” Each virtual computer may be running a different operating system other virtual machines unaffected.

Desktop virtualizationDesktop virtualization moves the

operating system and the applications it supports from the student desktop to a virtual computer running in a server. Each user can still customize the desktop environment (to the extent permitted by school policies).

However, unlike working on a single

assigned PC, when the student moves to a different location, such as from the classroom to a lab or library, the student’s entire workspace appears on whichever workstation or device the student is currently using.

If workstation hardware should fail, the student’s entire workspace is instantly available on any other workstation on the network. Software licenses for applications the student uses may be available for use by other students when the student’s virtual desktop is not actually in use.

Virtualization in EducationServer virtualization allows a

physical server to be partitioned to run multiple secure virtual servers. This creates an opportunity to consolidate physical servers, thus helping to reduce hardware acquisition and management costs by eliminating “infrastructure sprawl” at the server level.

If the resource requirements of one of the server-based products running in a virtual server grows, because of increased usage for example, moving that virtual server to a different physical server with more available resources is as simple as copying a file.

This ease of replication of vir tual servers also means that it’s simple to maintain snapshots of virtual servers as file back-ups and quickly restore complex systems to operation in the event of physical server hardware failures. This increased resilience results in more efficient use of existing physical server resources, lower operating costs, reduced power consumption and greater overall reliability.

Advantages of virtualization for education

There is a great advantage towards hardware refresh cycle savings with the school.

Most schools in India have acquired student workstation computers over an extended period. The typical school is faced with the dilemma of whether to spend scarce technology budget rupees to expand the number of student workstations toward

one per student or to replace the oldest machines with newer models that will better support current operating systems and desktop applications.

Desktop virtualization provides a way to increase the useful life of existing older PCs while at the same time reducing the cost-per-seat of new student workstations. This is done by running virtual desktop software on older PCs and purchasing less expensive

thin client workstations rather than full desktop computers to add additional workstation seats to the school. Even older PCs that cannot run current versions of popular operating systems and desktop applications can do so when used as thin clients running virtualized desktop software.

Desktop v i r tual izat ion is helping schools uti l ize older PCs and reduce the cost of new student workstations. Because the virtualization layer abstracts the resources of the underlying computer and presents them in a standardized way to the virtual machine’s operating system and applications, any virtual machine can be run on any server in the data center.

Older, smaller servers will

support fewer virtual machines than newer, larger servers. However, the management interfaces to all of the virtual machines will be uniform and will result in lower administration costs.

And for desktop workstations, vir tualization provides a way to deliver a uniform student experience regardless of PC age. A lab equipped with PCs with different processors and memory will provide a uniform student user experience

because the virtualized d e s k to p

e n v i r o n m e n t exists on the network servers rather than individual PCs. The students’ personalized workspaces will follow them from classroom to lab to library, and, where connectivity is available, the workspaces will even follow students home.

As connected devices become more ubiquitous, schools will be faced with the problem of supporting not only district-owned devices, but also a growing range of student-owned devices. More and more students now own personal network capable devices. Some, such as cell phones, smart phones, handhelds and portable game consoles already come to school with students in many districts.

Others, such as game consoles and personal computers, could be used to extend the school

day by prov id ing access to curriculum content from home. Virtualization technologies provide a way to abstract the workspace environment in such a way as to be able to present educationally valid content on a broad range of devices.

The additional network security provided by virtualization makes it possible for school networks to allow connection of student-owned devices to the school network without compromising the security, which is essential to maintain the reliability of the network.

With client virtualization, you no longer care that all of the devices on the network are not similar.

You can deliver curriculum content

to s tudents regardless

o f where they are or what sort of device t h e y a r e

using.

Lower total cost of ownershipBecause the management

of virtualized PC clients takes place mostly in the data center rather than in c lassrooms, administration is both simplified and standardized. Many system set-up and configuration operations that require access to physical computers in traditional computing environments become simple file copy operations in a virtualized desktop environment.

Virtualization has got a huge advantage within the education sector and as a technology it is sure to benefit the sector in a positive manner. In the coming years, the strengths of virtualization will surely attract more and more educational institutions to adopt virtualization in a bigger scale.

Samsung Rex 90 – Stamp of Quality

In today’s age of Android devices, it is hard to imagine someone buying a feature phone, and that too for around Rs 5,500. But in India there are many who still want a feature phone and do

not want to upgrade to smartphones. Obviously, that was the main reason for the success of Nokia’s Asha series of handsets.

Samsung has also jumped to the feature phone battle by launching its Rex series of handsets, which it refers to as Smart Feature phones, a name that Nokia also uses for its Asha series. The Rex 90 was the costliest handset in the Rex series of Samsung. Here is everything about the Samsung Rex 90, which we reviewed in detail over a period of about fifteen days.

Rex 90 looks a lot like the Android based Galaxy Y, with a metallic

strip around its sides; but it has a rather rectangular home button. The back panel is shiny, not slippery. The rear panel is made of pure plastic but due to the shiny surface it does not look cheap. It is not a big phone, thus it can be handled easily even by a kid. In fact, it looks more like a toy phone.

There is a rectangular home button just below the display, which is flanked by the Call and Return buttons on its left and right, respectively. Strangely, both the call and return buttons are identical to look at; it is only possible to discover their function once you operate the phone for a while. The call button only works once you are in the contact app.

The phone has a 3.5 inch display with 320 x 480 pixel resolution, which amounts to 165 ppi pixel density, and is not that attractive on a smartphone. But in case of Rex 90, it does not seem bad as you hardly get to play games on this handset. Anyway, it’s doubtful that anyone would love to watch videos on this handset.

Samsung has implemented a lot of features of smartphones in the Rex 90 to make it user friendly. For instance, the Rex 90 has a notification bar, which allows users to control WiFi, Bluetooth, and sound and flight modes. You can even control the music app from the notification bar. Besides, there is a provision to remove or place applications on the home page but in the menu page you can only arrange apps. To do that you have to locate a small settings icon on the top left side which, when clicked, allows you to move apps from one place to another.

Never afraid to experiment with different form factors and styles, we’ve seen Taiwan based manufacturer Asus frequently delivering a wide range of tablets that fit different lifestyles

and models. At one extreme, they’re renowned for coming to up with fantastic and memorable slates like the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity, while on the other, they never shy away from going with something more modest – like the Asus Transformer Pad 300.

Going back to the latter premise, the recently available 10.1-inch slate in the Asus MeMO Pad Smart 10 aims to win over people with its ample hardware and affordable price point.

By no means is the MeMO Pad Smart 10 a premium slate, especially when you factor in its average price point of $300, since its design language follows similarly to what we’ve seen in the Transformer Pad 300 already.

Employing a 9.9mm thin all-plastic casing, which strangely gets dirtied very easily, we’re humbled by its light weight (580 gr) and rounded edges – making it very comfortable to grasp with both hands. Overall, it chooses to stick with a cookie cutter approach with its design, which makes it all too conventional, but at least it doesn’t entirely come off as being cheapo.

Much like the other Android slates from its stable, the MeMO Pad Smart 10 maintains a very clean appearance on the surface, as the only thing evident from up front are the “Asus” logo and front-facing 1.2-megapixel camera.

Around the edges of the tablet, we’re thankful to know that it doesn’t skimp out on the usual ports that are typically akin to higher end models – like its microSD card slot and microHDMI port. In addition, we spot its tactile and distinctive power button and volume control, microphone, 3.5mm headset jack, and microUSB port for charging/data connectivity.

Indeed, it’s not something galvanizing amongst other things, but the 10.1-inch WXGA 1280 x 800 IPS LCD panel of the MeMO Pad Smart 10 is still pleasant enough to accept. For most people viewing the tablet from a normal distance, they shouldn’t find much trouble making out certain things – and that’s despite having a pixel density of 149 ppi. On the color reproduction side, it lacks the delicious iridescent tones seen with other panels, but at least it doesn’t exhibit too much distortion, which is attributed to its 170-degree wide viewing angles.

Sony Xperia ZFull Value for Money Device

■Good display■Great build quality■Classy looks & easy to hold

■Pricey■Battery back up

Sony has unveiled its latest smartphone the Xperia Z in India. The Android 4.1 Jelly Bean based smartphone has all the latest hardware including a 5 inch full HD display with

Gorilla Glass 2 coating and Bravia Engine 2 display technology, 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad core processor, 2 GB RAM and 15 GB ROM. It has also a top notch 13 megapixel camera on its back.

Not only the phone has the best in terms of hardware, but Sony has also priced it reasonably at Rs 38,990. In contrast, HTC Butterfly is priced at `45,990 despite having the same features as Sony Xperia Z. Such premium handsets need to be close to perfect.

The phone is very rectangular in shape but it is not boxy at all, with subtle rounded edges and glass cover, even at the back. All in all, it looks classy. The phone is easy to hold and doesn’t feel bulky and is very light weight at 146 grams and is slim too with just 7.9mm thickness.

Three buttons - the home, return and applications - which are

normally placed below the display, are actually on the display itself. This instead eats a lot of space of the display. Moreover, the touch buttons does not vanish while playing games but does go away in case of pictures and videos.

The front portion is all glass covered. Xperia Z has a Gorilla Glass 2 display however it is not that scratch resistant as it is expected to and it did get some minor scratches during our review. The front portion gets just the Sony logo on top, while the earpiece and the mic are placed on top and bottom respectively and are finished to look identically, which initially made us think that the two are stereo speakers.

All in all the Sony Xperia Z has a very classy design; it is lightweight and easy to hold. On top of that it has superb build quality besides being water and dustproof.

Sony Xperia Z has a 5 inch display with 1080p (1080 x 1920) resolution, which translates to 443 ppi pixel density. It comes with Bravia Engine 2 display technology with Gorilla Glass 2 cover- the combination skyrocketed our expectations.

Lava eTab Xtron The Elegant Device

Lava recently announced this 7 inch tablet, which is currently selling for around `6,500. The tablet has a decent set of features like a 7 inch screen, dual core processor, Android Jelly

Bean operating system, 1 GB RAM, 5 GB of internal storage, and 2 megapixel camera etc. Feature and price wise, the Lava eTab Xtron is a decent tablet. We used this tablet for around a month and here is our experience with it.

The device has a thin profile and is quite light too. It has a metallic coloured back panel made of plastic. The panel is a bit slippery and does not feel good in the hands. The thickest part of the tablet is its centre, while the back panel gradually curves towards the edges, which helps to hold the tablet. It comes in only one colour - metallic white back panel and front black display - so buyers do not have much choice.

To be specific, the Lava eTab Xtron measures 184 x 131 x 11.5 mm and weighs 350 gram. A highlight of the tablet is that all the

buttons are prominent and slightly above the surface of the tablet, which makes them easy to use. However, surprisingly, the micro SD card cannot be inserted in the tablet fully; a portion of the micro SD card sticks out from the tablet, which is very inconvenient at times. In portrait mode, you can see the power key, volume key and the return key on the right hand side while the 3.5 mm jack and the micro SD card slot is on the top. Overall, the Lava eTAb Xtron is a nice little tablet that feels much like a small book in the hands.

The Lava eTab Xtron has a 7 inch screen with 1024 x 600 pixel resolution. The capacitive touchscreen of the Xtron comes with multi touch capability as well. Moreover, it has an IPS panel with a wider viewing angle as well.

The Lava eTab Xtron comes with 8 GB of internal storage, of which 5 GB can be used to store one’s pictures, movies, songs etc. There is a micro SD card slot as well, which can be used to expand memory up to 32 GB.
