mobile4NHS - Empowering your Mobile Staff

IntroductionIn the NHS, there is a definite move to treat more patients within the community, whether at home, clinics or local practices. This leads management to consider ways of ensuring that data on patients is recorded and made available to the correct people, in the most convenient and secure manner. Traditionally, this has meant records being kept by all agencies and copied between them, where appropriate. Access to centralised computer-based records has been possible within fixed accommodation, but problematic with mobile staff. Lone-worker regulations also impose pressures to monitor the whereabouts of staff and their potential risks.

The solution is, either equip all staff with Laptop or Tablet PCs AND mobile phones - or to consider the use of Mobile Devices - SmartPhones with enhanced capabilities.

Why Mobile Devices?Many trials have taken place in the past, using Laptops and Tablet PCs, for clinical use. In the main, they have failed for a number of reasons;

Too heavy•Poor battery life and long time to charge•Time taken to be usable after being turned on•Problematical communications : • source: Spyglass Report 2004

Today, Mobile Devices are changing. They have larger, higher-defenition screens, fast processing power, always on communications, longer battery life, fast charging and remote control of applications. Only now can we seriously look to deliver worthwhile experiences on a small form factor mobile device. At last the potential to give staff a small device that combines the functions of a computer, phone, GPS and security device is here.

USES OF mobile4nhs

Using Mobile Devices can bring a

number of very distinct benefits;

• Always-on access to Staff

• Device tracking on AGPS

• Ability to improve on your Lone-

Worker H&S policies

• Access to ‘live’ back-end systems

• Non-Invasive Technology

“The missing link has been the ability to easily re-author screens for delivery to mobile - even from Legacy, Green-Screen, Host applications, we can add a Non-Intrusive, Integration layer - Good4Health can deliver that”

reliabilityMobile Devices are designed from the outset as communications tools. Their connection to the GSM network is in-built and not prone to failure.

The devices are also robust, hard-wearing, long-lasting and with good battery life and most importantly - an always-on feature.

SpeedGood4Health have an ability to connect to your back-end systems and present the information to the device, using only the very slowest of connections. To the technically-minded, we can work with only 1400kbps, slower than even a poor GPRS signal. So, if you have a phone signal at all, you can connect.

What about No-Signal Areas?We can operate in two main modes of use - LIVE and SEMI-LIVE.In the semi-live use, you would connect once, download your appointments, visits and schedule, along with the records needed for that session. (All of this is encrypted and can only be accessed by our secure application)

You can then access, make changes and when a connection is available, you can update to the live system. This way, no detail is lost and all required data is logged. We use ‘store and forward’ technology - connection can be automated and information always available.

Access to Back-End Legacy SystemsUnfortunately, much of the NHS is still using Legacy applications from over 20 years ago for Patient Records. Up until recently, it has been considered a poor investment to spend any money on these systems, knowing they will eventually be replaced in 2 or 3 years.Good4Health bring a proven technology that connects to ALL back-end systems in a non-intrusive manner. When the new systems emerge, the technology can still be utilised to combine the legacy and new systems, delivering a consistent, modern, standards-based interface that has long-life.

Other Features

As well as accessing customised screens from back-end systems, the devices are firstly mobile phones. They also feature GPS systems, allowing them to be used as ‘sat-nav’ in cars and even used to track the devices - automatic mileage forms!

•Paper-based systems need further effort to transcribe onto office systems. This is laborious and error-prone

• Always having proper access, anytime, anywhere, improves efficiency

• Greater efficiency allows more time to be spent with patients

• Less mistakes are made with automated systems

• As an employer, you are obligated to monitor the whereabouts of staff at all times

• Audits are expensive and often retrospective - always on systems provide ‘live’ auditing

• Managing staff is always difficult - multiplied many fold when they are mobile

• Small-form-factor devices are non-intrusive. They can easily be accessed before, during and after appointments.

Device Choice

Good4Health work with Trusts to ensure that the correct devices are made available to staff. The choice will be based on size, availability, weight, lifetime costs and usability. In trials, you will better understand the best device(s) to suit your specific needs. We already support most Nokia, Windows Mobile and iPhone handsets - your choice is important to us!

What about the Costs?Our estimates are that introducing these devices, along with the interfaces to the back-end systems, still costs less than 1% of the staffing budget. In real terms, this only needs to save around 10 minutes of a Clinicians’ time, to make it a cost benefit. In monetary terms, this will be around £250 - £300 per user, per year. These are the ‘hard-costs’. In terms of ‘soft-costs’, we work to minimise the change impact on the business. We are change specialists and can ensure the introduction does not have any detrimental impact on services - quite the opposite.

Support?We will offer a full package of services - from pre-sales consultancy, through implementation, training, after-sales services and support. A lost device can be replaced from stock and remotely wiped to ensure NO data issues exist. A new device only needs a change of SIM to start operating.

timescalesWhile this can offer a sea-change to your mode of working, the time to implement is actually dictated more by your ability to change, than our time to introduce the systems. A trial can be effected within 4 - 5 weeks and full rollout can be achieved in a few months.
