Eduardo Sciammarella has re-defined the mobile space again and again. Inventor of over 40

patents including the use of a jog-dial/rotary wheel as a hardware input device for a mobile

device. Eduardo’s firm Protohaus has worked on mobile interfaces for Apple, LG, Microsoft,

Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, and Sony, as well as numerous start-ups. The most notable start-up

being Fidg’t - the first social address book.

MOBILE THEORY

MESH-BOOK

Displays your contacts on an

elastic mesh grid, with

contacts ‘stretching’ space

around them when making a

status update. Networks your

friend belongs to are also

displayed. Whenever a friend

posts a message, the camera

pans to that user and displays

what they've posted.

Page 4: Mobile Theory Protohaus

POP-BOOK

Displays your contacts as

marbles. They pop and float

up when your friends post

something. This includes

photos, videos, and status

updates from many social

networks. Tilting the app lets

you play around with the

physics of the marbles as well

as social attributes that are

weighted towards your

interests.

CLOTH UI

In the cloth UI the user can

push and pull the cloth. The

interplay between the

shading, the cloth dynamics,

and the user interaction are

fluidly entrancing. This was

prototyped in Processing and

implemented it in OpenGL ES

on Nvdia’s Tegra chip.

Page 6: Mobile Theory Protohaus

FIREWORKS

The Fireworks UI let’s a user

gesture on the screen to

create fields of energy which

then join to increase in level

and create colorful dynamic

effects. A UI’s responsiveness

to play is what builds an

emotional bond between user

and device.

SOCIAL ADDRESS BOOK

In 2007 Protohaus released

the first social address book.

Fidg’t was adapted by

Motorola for their Blur

product. It aggregated multiple

social network accounts from

Facebook, Myspace, Flickr, and

many more into your phone’s

address book. It was a real-

time news feed, photo sharing

app, and IM client. Today it is a

common app on many

phones.

Before media-checkin applications were prevalent Protohaus had prototyped the next app

‘tvwithme’ for a major CE company. The confluence of mobile, social, games/content, and

large displays creates dynamic opportunities for next-generation social media interaction. This

is a new space that Protohaus will be very active for 2012-2014

3D AUDIO APP

For the last several years

Protohaus has been

experimenting with engineers

and artists on true 3D musical

experiences. Concepts for

apps, hardware, environments,

and services have been

developed.

Page 19: Mobile Theory Protohaus

One of the most powerful shifts in consumer electronics has been developing for many years

it is both ephemeral and deep rooted. The strongest brands in the future will seek out and

retain individual creatives that understand consumer media and devices like a Martin

Scorsese understands film. Consumer electronics is becoming part of the fabric of experience

culture - consumers are looking for authentic and individual voices to develop an emotional

and intimate relationship with. If you ask me how to develop a breakthrough transmedia

campaign (in other words the future of CE) - I say find yourself an innovative digital director.

I can help you with that one.

By capturing a TRON related image on your phone you receive a TRON disc.

Once in the system, users can redeem the acquired TRON light discs across a variety of TRON programs, and promotions throughout the Disney world.
