Programme and Newsletter
December-March 2012-13
Chairman’s Note’s
This year’s Christmas dinner will be held on Tuesday, 18
December at Ye Olde Plough House, Bulphan. A pre-dinner
walk is available for those who wish to avail themselves. Please complete
the enclosed booking form and return it to John Whitten as soon as possible.
Next Easter’s coach ramble will be on Tuesday, 9 April 2013, so please make
a note in your diary. This time we are off to Dunwich on the Suffolk coast.
John Whitten, who has been our Treasurer for a number of years, will be
stepping down at the 2013 AGM. We are now looking for a replacement. It
goes without saying that the job requires somebody with a logical mind who
has an interest in figure work. If anybody feels that they would like a more
active role within the group and take over this important role would they
please contact either me, or another member of the committee.
Secretary’s Report
Next year’s Area AGM will be on February 9th, Stock Village Hall, at 10.00am.The guest speaker, Lucy Humphrey, is the Senior Commercial
Marketing Officer for the Ramblers. There is normally a walk in the
afternoon.

SAVE THE NATIONAL TRAILS CAMPAIGN
The government will soon make a decision on the future of the National
Trails. They could be at risk if responsibility for their maintenance is handed
over to County Councils or voluntary organisations. More than 7, 000 people
have already signed the petition to save them. To add your name to the list, just go to the Ramblers website.
Havering Footpath & Countryside Officer
Footpath Maintenance Working Party
Thank you from me and from Havering Council to everyone who has
come and helped this year. The final date for 2012 is November 16th
and the first provisional date for 2013 is March 15th.
It would be very helpful if Ramblers would let me know of footpaths in
our area where they feel work needs to be done.
The closing date for the next programme is the 28
th February 2013
As we plan to start to compile the April to July programme as soon as the
December-March programme is issued it would be much appreciated if you could supply your walks as soon possible especially if you require a specific
date. Our drop dead date is the 28th
February but please remember the later
you leave it the likelihood the dates that you require will be more restricted.
If you would like to lead a walk on the next programme, please contact a
member of the committee who I am sure will be happy to help you.
Can you please give your walk for the next programme to either
Peter O’Neill on 01708 455626 or Peter Rees on 01708 445177 or
[email protected]
Page 3

Web Site
If you would like to receive your programme by e-mail instead of a paper
copy please contact Peter Owen on [email protected] .
By obtaining your copy in this way it will save us printing and postage costs.
The programme is the largest outlay from our funds. A programme will, of course, still be printed but we are hoping to be able to cut down the number
being run off. However, if you decide after a trial of receiving the programme
via e-mail, that you would rather revert to the printed copy please just send another e-mail to Peter Owen at the above e-mail address and you will then be
sent paper copies. All members with e-mail access are urged to try the new
system.
All walks
If the weather is inclement, it is important to either check our web site as noted on page 1or contact the leader to see if the walk will take place.
Please check for the availability of public transport on the TFL web site,
before travelling at weekends to allow for the planning of alternative
routes.
Car share
Please car share where possible, as parking is often quite limited.
Curry Evening
Curry night is Thursday 28th
February 7.30pm at the Railway Hotel, Hornchurch at 7.30pm. The curry is optional as the full Ember Inn menu is
available. The curry evening is held in the function room so there is no
scramble for a table in the bar. The venue is next to Hornchurch District Line
Station, buses 252, 193, and 256 also pass the door. Further details can be obtained from Tony Hyde on
01708 551470.

Walking with the Ramblers
‘All sporting activities have inherent hazards associated with them, and
rambling is no exception. In spite of the safety of members always being the
paramount concern, accident will occasionally occur. It is therefore important
that when entering into the activity, each member appreciates that they have a
responsibility to identify the hazards associated with the activity, and take all
reasonable steps to eliminate or minimize the potential for an accident to
occur’.
The Ramblers Association is a company limited by guarantee, registered in
England and Wales. Company registration number 445892. Registered
charity in England and Wales Number 1093577. Registered office, 2 Floor,
Camleford House, 87-90 Albert Embankment London SE1 7TW.

Canterbury Coach Ramble
Group Discussion
On a recent coach ramble to Canterbury, Havering and East London

just temporarily misplaced. Photo taken by Peter Owen.

Ramblers Holidays Walking Partnership
The Havering and East London Ramblers group
has recently joined The Walking Partnership.
This new partnership, supported by Ramblers
Worldwide Holidays, provides direct financial contributions to local walking
groups to help with organising group walks, encouraging people to get out
walking, helping to clear and improve footpaths, providing equipment to help
walkers etc. Over the past 65 years, Ramblers Worldwide Holidays has given
many millions of pounds to assist walking charities and conservation projects
in Britain and the countries they visit on their worldwide holidays. Now our
group can benefit directly.
Ramblers Worldwide Holidays operate group walking holidays in the UK and
all around the world. Each holiday is accompanied by a qualified walks leader,
so you can leave all the organising to them and just enjoy meeting like minded
people and of course, some fantastic walking. Holidays are graded in terms of
difficulty, and there is a full range from sightseeing right up to hut-to-hut
mountain treks. Take a look at their website on www.ramblersholidays.co.uk
or give them a call on 01707 33113 for more details or to order a brochure.
Remember when you book to quote the name of our group, and we will then
receive a contribution of £10 per person on UK holidays, £20 per person on
short haul holidays, and £30 per person on long haul holidays. This extra
funding could really make a difference to us
