Durham College currently provides a Mobile Learning program for select programs in the schools
of Business, IT & Management and Media, Art & Design. Of the more than 7,000 full-time
students enrolled at Durham College, approximately 1,800 participate in the Mobile Learning
program using Durham College laptops and software. Students are provided with a Lenovo or
Apple laptop and each student pays a fee to participate in the program.
Present mode of operation
Drivers for change
Students have been lobbying for ownership of their hardware for some time and in 2006 Durham
College responded by providing them with the option to purchase a laptop at the completion of
their program. Since then there have been continued requests for change, change that was also
identified in the 2008 Program Quality Assurance Process Audit (PQAPA).

As of the 2010-2011 academic year, Durham College will no longer be providing
laptops and software to students in the Mobile Learning program.
Students:
Will be required to provide their own laptops;
Will be required to legally obtain their own software;
Will have access to loaner laptops at a suitable rate fee; and
Will be able to obtain consultation support for their personal laptops at the
Service Desk.
Faculty:
Will list the minimum hardware and software requirements enabling students to
purchase the laptop and software for their specific program.

Durham College full- and part-time students currently enrolled in the Mobile Learning program (2010
winter term) using college-issued laptops will be impacted by the change in September 2010 if they
are continuing into the second or third year of their program.
Students will have the option to do one of the following:
1. Remain
choose to continue to use a college-owned laptop until end of their academic program. It
is important to note that this option ends in April 2012.
2. Buyout choose to buy their current Durham College laptop at the end of the 2009-2010 academic
year (pricing details to follow) and purchase the required software independent of the college for the
2010-2011 academic year. Students will be required to arrange for their own service, support and
maintenance of their laptops.
3. Bring their own laptop choose to return their current Durham College laptop at the end of the
2009-2010 academic year. Students will purchase their own laptop including all the required hardware
and software independent of the college for the 2010-2011 academic year. Students will be required
to arrange for their own service, support and maintenance of their laptops.
How does this impact students?
