PROBLEMS FACED BY AGED

Their children become intolerant of their regular health problems

Vulnerable since don’t have access to legal rights

Are denied basic check-ups by their children due to money issues

Dumped in shelter homes

Problems of accessibility and use of health services arise due to distance, absence of escort and transportation

Not able to afford regular check-ups due to high consultation fee

Prone to criminal elements or fraudulent dealings

Don’t have access to ’24x7 Support’ medically, legally or safety wise

Unable to see their children and grandchildren for long periods of times.

FACTORS FOR THE BAD SITUATIONMuch higher costs of bringing

up and educating children and pressures for gratification of

their desires affects transfer of share of income for the care of

parents.

Due to shortage of space in dwellings in urban areas and high rents, migrants

prefer to leave their parents in their native place.

Desire not to be encumbered by caring responsibilities of

old people, career ambitions, implies considerably reduced

time for care giving.

Changing roles and expectations of

women, their priority of privacy and space.

FAVOURABLE CONDITIONS to deal with the situation ▪ NATIONAL POLICY FOR OLDER PERSONS YEAR

1999The Policy visualizes that the State will extend support for financial security, health care, welfare and other needs of older persons, provide protection against abuse and exploitation, make available opportunities for development of the potential of older persons, seek their participation, and provide services so that they can improve the quality of their lives.

▪ Steps undertaken for the empowerment of older persons so that they can acquire better control over their lives and participate in decision making.

▪ Arrangements being made to provide specialization in geriatric medicine in medical colleges, nursing, public & private hospitals.

▪ Statutory body with the powers of a judicial court has been proposed for senior citizens.

▪ PRESENCE OF hundreds of NGOs, OLD AGE HOMES, RETIREMENT HOMES throughout the length and breadth of India.

▪ Provision of website and helplines.

▪ Organizing of various senior citizen events such as marathon etc to keep the elderly as much involved and active, thus helping them live a more fulfilled life.

▪ Celebration of October 1st as ‘International Senior Citizen’ Day to celebrate their importance in the society.

▪ Vayoshrestha Samaans, to eminent senior citizens involved in rendering distinguisehed services for the cause of elderly persons, especially indigent senior citizens.

If issue is minor, then prescribe medication and schedule a follow up call the next day.
