you’re here!Well done! You’ve done it. You have finally made it to university and moved to a new city for the first time by yourself.

The only problem is that you don’t know where you are, where to go, what’s any good and what’s bad. That’s fine! The Peeler is here to rescue your fresher needs.

We’ll tell you where’s the cheapest, livliest (and again cheapest) in the world of food, drink, entertainment and lifestyle for your first year of Uni. From your first late night kebab to the twice yearly haircut.

We’ll also tell you a little bit about how you can expect to balance that all-important social life with studying as well. After all, even if we don’t like to admit it, that is why you’re here in the first place!

So sit back, relax, and let The Peeler take you on a tour of Sheffield. We’ll also tell you a little bit about how you can expect to balance that all-important

social life with studying as well. After all, even if we don’t like to admit it, that is why you’re here in the first place!

So sit back, relax, and let The Peeler take you on a tour of Sheffield.

barsWhilst you’re studying in Sheffield you can pretty much guarantee that you will need a place to sit back, relax and unwind after a day of sitting in lec-tures, attneding seminars and rooting through the library. Luckily Sheffield is jam packed with bars and pubs where you can treat yourself to a drink when you need it most!

You can sample what is on offer in the Devonshire Quarter which consists of Division Street and Devonshire Street. Just parallel to that is West Street, the main strip where you will find a multi-tude of bars. There is also West One which as a lesiure complex features favourites such as Vodka Revoulution (See background).

If it is a quieter one you’re after, down by the Riverside is the Kelham Island Quarter. Filled with real ale pubs, these more traditional Taverns can introduce you to beers you wouldn’t get any-where else in Sheffield.

But don’t just stick to these hubs of drinking oppuritunities, dotted all over

the city are plenty of drinking hoiles to sample. You have the student unions of both Universities, wine bars tucked away up side streets as well as the places you will pass moving from one end of town to the other.

So make sure you look around! Get aquanited with those places that will give you respite throughout the next few years. To help you get started, The Peeler is here to show you a few popu-lar bars around the city to get the ball rolling.

Happy Hunting!

barsForum Situated in the coolest part of town,

The Devonshire Quarter, The forum is a staple flagship part of your social life. In summer expect to flock to it’s prime beer garden with deck chairs and practically sat on Devonshire Green which means you can enjoy your pint in the sunshine.

With the rightly deserved reputation of being one of the coolest bars in Sheffield, Bungalow and Bears (or just Bunaglow’s for short) is a must hang out for all students.

Not one piece of furniture matches in this place, but it doesn’t matter becuase when you’re enjoying a pint and listening to whatever band or dj is playing next to the bar that is the last thing on your mind.

Whilst you’re here you can sample some-thing from their menu, including home made fried chicken and gourmet burg-ers meaning you don’t have to leave and lose your coveted seat even when you become hungry!

Peace Gardens

Frog and Parrott Right in the heart of the Devonshire Quarter is the Frog and Parrot. Every Friday night expect to see a live band, enjoy a drink in the velvet seats and soak up the su in their beer garden.

In the day you can pop in and even get something to eat.

The BoweryOnce owned by Sheffield’s very own Artic Monkeys star Jamie, the Bowery is the epiphany of cool. One of the best indie hangouts here you can sit back in there old hunting lodge furniture with a pint of european lager and watch some obscure local band play a gig.

It is right opposite West One and over-looks the Devonshire Green part of town so on a hot day expect to spend all day on Devonshire Green, and when it begins to et a bit cooler you can walk into The Bowery to carry on the evening!

You can also buy tickets for all your must-go club nights such as plug and corporation whilst you’re here!

Inside you can expect to see a hareen of students buzzing about the place either having a drink in Bar Phoniex, buying their Hallam Hoodies from Pod4 or taking part in activities within their chosen socities.

as a bunch of club nights which don’t cost the earth! Not forgetting the annual Freebie Fair where you will gain a lot of free Yorkshire Tea and pens to keep you going whilst you start Uni!

gigs & livegigs and liveSheffield is full of venues where you can see a live show or band. Most obvioud is the Sheffield Motorpoint Arena near the Don Valley Stadium. The Arena is the largest in the region and has hosted some of the biggest names in the world from comedy to music.

There are hundreds of independent bars and clubs that host gig nights, so it would be impossible for us here at The Peeler to name them all, so we have picked a select few that we think is vital to visit during your first year at uni.

First of all lets get aquainted with Sheffield City Hall (pictured as

background). Situated in the city cen-tre at Barkers Pool, not only is it one of the oldest buildings in Sheffield but with a multi million transformtion has become of the best venues Sheffield has to offer. Each year it plays host to Grin Up North comedy festival with names such as Jimmy Carr play-ing here and it also has been music venue for such big names as Michael Bublet and Tom Jones!

gigs and liveOr for your larger events, whether it is Lady Gaga, Kiss, Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, Britney Spears or the Sheffield Steelers Ice Hockey team (the list is endless) you have Sheffield Motorpoint Arena. Situated in the Don Valley area of the city, right next to the stadium, sports institute and Ice Sheffield you can get here by tram, bus or car! It seats a massive 13,500 people and has had some of the biggest names in music within it’s walls.

Of course however, sometimes massive events that seat thou-sands of people just isn’t what you’re after. Sometimes you want somewhere smaller with an

atmosphere. For that you are spoilt for choice in Sheffield. Just in the city centre alone you have one of the oldest and legendary Leadmill club. As you might have guessed from the name, it’s an old Lead Mill and has provided a venue for such bnds as The Human League, Arctic Monkeys (again) and Madness. It’s dark, got multiple bars and as well as a live music venue doubles up as a nightclub. You can’t really get much cooler.

Last but not least I must mention Plug, spread over three rooms, Earth, Live and Neutral, you will always be sure to find some live music in at least one of the rooms!

spotlight on:BETTY’S Betty’s Traditional Fish and Chips is the staple of many peoples weekend treats. Located in between Devonshire Street and West Street (just across from West One) you can find it sitting there amongst a brilliant white wall framed in

a green square looking like the kind of establishment you would expect to see at the seaside. And we all know that as student’s you can’t afford to be eating out every night just becuase you can’t be bothered to cook

which is why it’s a good job that Betty’s specials are out in full force! You can get a mini fillet of fish (which btw aren’t so mini) chips and peas with a can for £4. If you can’t justify £4 for some of the best fish in Sheffield then you need to have a serious word it your selves my

friends!

So there you have it, one of the best fish and chip shops of the land right in the heart of the city centre. They’re also open late for your late night munchies.

Page 20: mnnbnbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb

you can wine and dine!

Check out what we have to offer you in some of Sheffield’s finest institutions that have always been popular with students within the city.

Leopold Square

Las Iguanas

Home to Strada, Platillos, Zizzi and Agraars you will most probably find yourself frequenting Leopold Square on student loan day, when you have a little bit more cash than usual and you want to treat yourself!

Located at the bottom end of West Street no doubt you can work your way up from here back to bed.

Situated in the stylish West One complex, Las Iguanas is the no. 1 spot for Latin American dining in Sheffield.

Sizzling fajitas and mojito’s are what you can expect to find here with an atmosphere that will make you want to get up from your meal and salsa dance!

Page 21: mnnbnbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb

Leopold Square

Browns Just next to the Peace Gardens overlook-ing the fountains you can grab an outside seat on a sunny day in Browns. This grill-house has become an instant favourite amongst citygoers with ot’s classic-meet-s contemporary decor in one of the city’s fin-est buildings.

Here you can grab a steak or grilled chicken salad, whatever you fancy from there wide menu. An average main course is around £15, so it is pretty mid range in terms of budget.

An advantage here is it also boasts a large bar area, so if you want after your meal you can continue the evening with a selection of drinks with friends. The perfect spot to start drinking after a meal on a night out!

Meadowhall is a mere 15 minutes journey from the city cen-tre either by car, bus or on the yellow route service of the Super Tram. If you do drive, there’s free parking!

All your favourite stores are there wether they be High Street names we all know and love such as Topman/Topshop, River Island and H&M or something a bit more designer where one of the massive flagship department stores will have something a little bit different.

Inside there is also a multiplex cin-ema where amongst a massive Dining Quarter filled with fast food outlets and restraunts where you can get your fill, catch a film and do your shopping at the same time. There isn’t an awful lot

here that you can’t do!

study timeSo believe it or not, the reason you have moved to Sheffield and the rea-son you went through the effort of student finance was so that you could come to University and study to get your degree! Now, we here at The Peeler have spent the majority of this magazine informing you how to have a good time at uni outside of curricular hours. However, we do have to tell you that you are going to have to do some uni work outside of timetabled hours too! I know, really boring and a bit of a buzz kill but like we said, it’s why you’re here in the first place!

We can almost guarantee that in the

crunch of deadlines you will spend a fair amount of time in your university’s library. If you’re a Sheff Uni student you will have the Information Commons (The IC) and if you’re from Hallam then you have either the main library at city campus The Adsetts Centre or the Learning Centre at Collegiate Crescent.

Do make use of the resources here, at the end of the day if you have an amaz-ing social life and a decent degree at the end of your three years then you know you haven’t wasted a big chunk of your life which is going to go pretty quickly!

Page 25: mnnbnbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb

So to help you along, as well as post-ing pictures of the library buildings so you actually know what they look like, see below for some vital info you should know for surviving the acadmic part of your university life.

cultureSheffield has a selection of art galleries from small independent affairs to those owned by the city’s own Museums Sheffield chain. Over the road from The Hubs is the Site Gallery, where you can see a range of digital and new media art forms displayed for all to see. It’s right in the heart of the Cultural Industries Quarter and has recently undergone a massive transformation to make it a leader in the field. There is also the Millenium Galleries situated next to the Winter Gardens, both worth taking a look at! The Millenium Gallery focuses on craft design and you can learn about Sheffield’s industrial past. There are also constantly changing exhibitions so be sure to pop in to see any changes.

Sheffield also has the leargest theatre complex outside of London. Based in Tudor Square, the theatre district con-sists of the classical Lyceum theatre, and the Crucible and Crucuble corner. The Crucible is also the home of the World Championship Snooker so you can look forward to Sheffield hosting that every year whilst you’re here!

As we mentioned previously, Museums Sheffield own 4 of the largest museums in the city. As well as the Millenium Gallery, they own Weston Park Museum, Bishops House and Graves Gallery. Bishops House being one of the oldest buildings in Sheffield!

So wether it is the creativity of the city you wish to see displayed in a room, the passion and flair on a stage or to soak up the beauty of the surround-ings Sheffield’s cultural heritage is rich enough for you to get lost in for the coming years.
