anzani clinicrenovation

milan, italy

During my internship at the architectural firm QUarch I joined the senior Architects in two renovations.

The clinic needed certain adjustments required by the local health authorities, such as a bathroom for the disabled and the adjustment of the height of the ceiling. Dr. Anzani also required a review of the distribution of the rooms with consequent adjustment of all the systems. Because of the presence of operating rooms and complex machinery, the design required the cooperation of and consultation with numerous professionals. My work consisted in preparing some architectural drawings, as well as in designing the electrical, audio and video system, adapting existing furnishings, preparing the documentation to be submitted for permits, making direct contact with the other professionals involved, managing relationships with the company performing the work and supervising the construction with the senior Architect until completion. in

The other project in which I participated was the renovation of a second dental clinic for the same client, located in Milan, for the same reasons as the previous one.

The clinic needed some adjustments required by the local health authorities, in particular the creation of a disabled toilet, a locker room space for employees and the renovation of ceilings for compliance with the minimum height requirements. My work consisted of the preparation of the drawings of survey and design, selection of materials for finishing, fitting and existing furnishing recovery, preparation of metric calculation, making direct contact with suppliers and the company performing the work, and preparation of documentation to be submitted for permits. Dr. Anzani’s main request was to make the entrance brighter, reuse furniture where possible and retain an important metal portal-sculpture present in the waiting room; a conservative solution was designed with a blacksmith.

At the end of my internship the work had not yet begun.

let’s rebuild and clothe togethersetting

lodi, italy

SETTING FOR THE FREE EXCHANGE DAY ORGANISED BY THE NON PROFIT ASSOCIATION GE.CO, LODI. Project designed in collaboration with ARCò - Architecture and Cooperation, Milan.

CONCEPTThe project stems from the need to create a space for the exchange of second hand clothing, easily accessible, achieved only with recycled materials, with minimum cost and easy and quick assembly. The space is conceptually divided into 5 areas: reception, women, men and children areas, and an unisex dressing space.

MATERIALSPallets, wooden fruit boxes, cardboard shoes boxes, plastic bottles. Assembly involves only twine jute, hemp and sisal.

COMPONENTS- The horizontal displays are made with pallets of a size of 80x120 cm resting on wooden boxes (containers/displays themselves).- Vertical displays are made of only wooden boxes about the size of 30x30x50 cm, embedded and linked. - The dressing room is made with shoe boxes of about 10x17x30 cm, drilled and held together with a string loop and scotch tape. The stability is ensured by water bottles hanging on the lower ends of the wires. The boxes are tied to a hula hoop of d=100 cm, attached to the existing chain. A simple fabric cover with hanging hooks is used to hide the entry. The wall of boxes is 150 cm high and is suspended at 30 cm from the ground.

florence, italy

During the master ID&A we were asked to redesign the reception area of the school. Unnecessarily large, the area was only used as a corridor. The requirements were to create a space for meet and relax and at the same time to act as a reception area giving a favourable impression of the school to visitors. Everything had to be made with waste materials impacting as little as possible on the existing and limited budget.

CONCEPT AND MATERIALSThe project met the requirements of economy and was based on the intention of designing easy to assemble furniture and decorative elements. The aim was to create a sort of winter garden to act as a screen for visitors and to be at the same time a livable area and temporary stopover. Elements made of threaded metal tubes screwed to the floor and coloured cardboard disks with varying diameter, acting as totems which remind of trees in a garden, marking the path and separating the space starting from the entrance.Coloured polystyrene discs of various shades of blue are hung from the current ceiling at variable heights, imitating the floating clouds in the air. A shield of pallets hides the vending machines and the seating is made of glazed wooden pallets and washable pillows. Washable films in warm shades of yellow and brown are applied to the laminate walls.

CONCEPT“Puzzle” stems from the desire to create a unified and modular lighting system suitable for various types of interior (but primarily aimed at the retail sector). It is a spotlight designed to discharge lamps mounted on a track, but easily adaptable for other types of lamp and support thanks to its versatility and possible variants. It has been designed as part of a system, but it also can be used as a single element or part of a system of various types of lamp (LED, halogen).

MATERIAL- Base: molded plastic material (it is assumed to be bydur or methacrylate) white colour, glossy finish; the mold comprises of the compartment housing the transformer, the housing for coupling to the track and the travel stop. - Socket: sheet, red, glossy finish - Support ring: molded aluminum, black, gloss finish - Other elements: metal plates, screws, pins.

nlet’s rebuild and clothe togetherdisplays

lodi, italy

CONCEPTOther kinds of displays for clothing for the setting of “Let’s rebuild and clothe together” had been proposed. The requirements were the same: use of waste materials, minimum cost, ease of assembly.

MATERIALSTubes of exhausted plotter paper rolls, which were made of 1 cm thick cardboard of different diameters (15/20/40 cm). Being heavy and resistant to compression, they were therefore reasonably stable. They had been fixed to a wooden base by plugs and perforated along the surface, where half litre plastic bottles were arranged for the first type, metal bent spoons for the second one.

CONCEPT“Fiorella” was born during a workshop held by Nicoletta Veronesi, artist based in Milan, at NABA (New Academy of Fine Arts). The purpose of the workshop was to give new life to waste materials destined for the trash, retrieve them and make them into jewels. The only rule: to free the imagination and to give room for creativity.

MATERIALS- collar in copper wire, d=1 mm- plastic collar caps of water bottles- plastic stoppers for wine bottles- cardboard packs of papers for DIY cigarettes- binding in copper wire, d=0.4 mm

CONCEPT“Naranja” was born within the workshop “Naturelli gioielli” held by Nicoletta Veronesi in NABA, Milan. This time the aim was to create jewelry using only materials donated from nature, whatever might catch your eye during a walk in the woods or on the beach.

NECKLACE MATERIALS- collar in copper wire, d=1 mm- dried orange and lemon slices- dried orange and lemon peels- red berries- copper wire, d=0.4 mm

former asylum of Volterra: a possible reusesupervisor: Prof. Arch.

Marcello Scalzo

The construction of the psychiatric hospital in Volterra started in 1866 thanks to private initiative and financial contribuitions by the citizens. Initially designed to accommodate the elderly and the homeless, in a short time a section for dementia was set up there. Thanks to the direction of Dr. Luigi Scabia, over the years the hospital was significantly enlarged and hosted more and more patients from across Italy, becoming a sort of semi-autonomous town comprising of about 130 buildings. Most of them have been restored over the years, starting from the closure of the asylum in 1978, and converted into the current City Hospital.

thesis

The 3 buildings on Poggio alle Croci, “Maragliano”, “Ferri” and “Charcot”, remained in a state of neglect probably because of their large volume and their isolated position on the top of the hill amongst the woods.

PAVILION MARAGLIANO: 1180 m2, 6380 m3.It was located on health grounds, being the pavilion reserved for tuberculosis patients. Placed higher than others and with its main facade facing west, it has two curved sides with open arcades, where the patients could spend their time in the open air and sun.

PAVILION FERRI: 5240 m2, 28890 m3.Its massive and closed in on itself form was due to its function: it was the judicial department of the asylum, separate from the rest of the civil hospital by walls and

barbed wire, a guarded gate and bars on the windows. The inmates used to spend their free time in the courtyard; here Oreste Fernando Nannetti, known as NOF4, drew his graffiti.

PAVILION CHARCOT: 4890 m2, 26759 m3.Originally a ward for female occupational therapy, it became the pavilion for semi self-sufficient male patients, divided into two sections depending on the severity of their diseases. Built in two phases, the first floor was added at a later date.

PROJECT PURPOSESThe aim was to evolve a function for the pavilions which was pertaining to the current use of the rest of the area (hospital) and, at the same time, an attempt at redemption from the original (asylum). A rehabilitation centre for children, one for adults and an assisted nursing home for the elderly people

were therefore chosen. The external appearance of the pavilions was to be preserved and a change of volume was not allowed nor, for structural reasons, could any interior walls be broken down or moved; the structure has been adapted to the new function without affecting its original general layout, respecting and preserving its genius loci. The project is targeted at permanent or temporary disabilities of all ages; the buildings are all equipped with appropriate structures for rehabilitation and physical therapy.

The complex of Poggio alle Croci is organized as follows: - MARAGLIANO: administration, internal services;- FERRI: rehabilitation center for adults and elderly people, nursing home;- CHARCOT: rehabilitation center for children, canteen.

survey and analysis

The entire complex was measured, except for some parts no longer accessible due to collapse and the poor state of preservation. In order to compensate for this lack, I made use of historical documentation made available by the technical department of Volterra, the archive and the museum of the former asylum. The survey and the resulting project are of such magnitude that they can not be shown in their entirety, for this reason only the more representative drawings are listed below.
