SUMMARY OF THE MMLE I CHOSE TO USE:

• The MmLE I chose to use is from PHET Interactive Simulations and it is called the Sugar and Salt Solutions. The purpose of the Sugar and Salt Solutions Simulation is to let students experiment what happens when sugar and salt are added to water. This simulation gives students a chance to pour in sugar, shake in salt, and evaporate water to see the effects on concentration and conductivity.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.3 Describe the relationship between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence, and cause/effect.

• The principle of pacing according to Moreno and Mayer (2007), students learn better when allowed to control the pace of presentation of the instructional materials (p. 316). While using the MmLe of Sugar and Salt Solutions, students are able to control the pouring of the sugar, shaking of the salt, and evaporation of the water to see the effects on concentration. If “pacing is an example of controlling type of interactivity” (Moreno & Mayer, 2007, p.319) and the students are in control of how they are experimenting using the MmLE, this simulation is an example of pacing.
