Strength Weakness Opportunities and Challenges (SWOC)

MMAJ- Academy of International Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi

Strength

1. The faculty at AIS is highly qualified with wide range of experience at international and national

institutions and programmes in research and teaching of international relations, having studies at and visited

Cambridge, Oxford, US Fulbright Fellowship Programme.

2. The AIS faculty has created an expansive teaching and research programme enabling students, other

academicians, diplomats, experts to learn from those interested in the publications and activities of AIS. The

topics covered include globalisation, trade, politics, social identity, culture, conflicts, international

organisations and strategic issues. As such it has become a leading centre of interdisciplinary and

comparative studies on international relations with a worldwide network.

3. The number of international conferences and national ones, talks and workshops, the AIS has organised

has by itself created global audience for its publications and participants for its activities.

4. The AIS attracts students not only from Jamia with its reservation for Muslim minority but from all parts

of India, ranging Kashmir to Kerala and North-East to Rajasthan. It is getting an increasing number of

students from abroad for its M.Phil and Ph.D programmes from Italy, Afghanistan, Mauritius, Libiya etc.

5. In India the AIS has the only language teaching programme in Uzbek and Mandarin (Chinese) funded by

the national University of Taiwan (NIU). Many Students have won fellowships for doing higher studies in

Chinese to go to Taipei. A Taiwanese Teacher has been deputed by the NIU.

6. The UGC has started successfully area study programmes on Pakistan, Central Asia, China and

Afghanistan at AIS which have been very productive in terms of original research, and interaction at high

political and diplomatic levels making the AIS also a Think Tank, AIS has influenced government in direct

ways.

7. The AIS has built up its library named after Dr. Abid Husain. It has three floors full of latest books and

journals on international relations, globalisation, security studies, etc. It has a documentation officer who

provides the latest article and papers published in journals and the students also have access to nine

computers, e-journals, newspapers. Many of AIS students have got teaching appointments, jobs in

administration, journalism and media. They and the AIS faculty have been on field research visits to

Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Japan, China, Vietnam, Turkey, etc. Their experience is growing with

time considering that the AIS started its M.Phil./Ph.D. programme only from 2007/8. With help of the

faculty they have written dissertations on varied original themes. These dissertations are available in the

University’s central Library named after Dr. Zakir Hussain, and in the departmental library. Before 2007/8

AIS also known then as Academy of Third World Studies was purely a research institute and many of its

publications were brought out before 2008 which have not been included here. In 2011 the Academy of

Third World Studies got its present name Academy of International Studies (AIS). AIS has scholars working

on Africa, West Asia and Europe on which it can expand its research and teaching programmes in the future.

The AIS library has been given an extension of four storeys, one is already built, and plenty of rooms to

expand in the future.

Page 16: MMAJ Academy of International Studies

Manual for Universities Page 16 of 24

Weaknesses and Challenges

1. Without an M.A. Programme in international studies, the AIS cannot provide a better base for its

M.Phil./Ph.D. programmes and give time to students to improve their language skills, and master

languages with which they can do even deeper research on different issues and areas. The AIS must

also focus on publishing the Dissertations with the help of the ICSSR Programme.

2. The IT Infrastructure, smart classrooms, bringing out a journal, looking for more funding from

foreign agencies putting in more A/Cs sending the faculty on leave to study abroad at other leading

centres on International relations is the need of the hour. The UGC too should help in this process.

Bringing better students and faculty will also help.

3. Training for competing for IFS and jobs in UN organisations should be started.

4. The faculty should monitor research continuously and involve external experts in evaluation even

more than at present.

52. Future plans of the department

• To bring out a journal on international relations when funds are available. • To facilitate the learning of the

language needed to do a Ph.D. • To hold international and national conferences on relevant subjects: Four

are planned for the January-May Semester • To fill all the vacancies especially in the newly created centers

for Afghanistan and China Studies. • To further expand African Studies. • To get funds to send students for

field research.
