The picture to your right was on the cover of Issue 1 and we print it again now as a reminder to those who were involved. The picture shows local youngsters (they were then !!) planting trees for the Millennium at Sheriffs Court. Unfortunately their names weren’t listed, so we have been trying to put names to faces, for a few months now, and although we have had a great deal of success we have failed to identify 2 of them. They are the young lad on the very left of the group in the “hoody” and the young lady third from the right. Perhaps someone can put us out of our misery and identify them for us. Any information please contact a member of the editorial team. They are from left to right: Unidentified, Toby Dorman, James Fuller, Hannah Cooper, Lydia Fuller (don’t you just love her hat !!), Laura Portanier, Kimberley Gallagher, Libby Alexander, Unidentified, Michelle White and Amy Northrop. Minster Matters 3EDITORIAL
What a legacy Kelvin left us with, I only hope we are doinghim proud and continuing to produce a magazine that allresidents can be proud of, but if we’re not then let us know.
Here we are with the 100th issue, so we must be doingsomething right, to have had your continuing support over thattime. I know we’ve had the odd hiccup along the way, especiallysince I was handed the reins, but all I can say in my own defenceis I’m getting old and SD is setting in, so bear with me, Ipromise I do try, least ways my wife tells me I’m very trying(isn’t that the same thing? Perhaps not !) Still you’re stuck withme for now, so just try and make the best of it.
We’ve had a great response from many of the businesses inand around the village this year, lots of personal donations fromresidents, also donations from some of the village clubs andfrom those who have organised events to support us. All ofwhich has enabled us to keep our heads above water, and tocontinue to produce the audio CD’s for the visually impaired, plus we’ve been able to offer our readers the occasional chanceto win themselves a worthwhile prize or two.
Check out the competitions we’ve got for you , on page ??There are some really great prizes up for grabs, which makes itwell worth your while entering. So we’re expecting ourmailboxes in both the Library and the Gossip Shop to beoverflowing with entries this month.
Did we all have a good Christmas and New Year ? Did youall get what you hoped for ? I did, I only really wanted one thing, and my wishes were fulfilled when I opened a huge box, to find,I have at long last got, the telescope I’ve craved for. Now I canstargaze to my hearts content, except of course when I amworking on MM and chasing a print deadline.
Well we hope you enjoy this issue and the especially largecolour section this month.(4 pages !!) See you again in March.
Even Zac (aka Gobby) has managed to sneak in a colourpicture of himself. He’s so vain that dog of mine.

Valerie Susan Hughes18th November 1945 to 20th November 2008Valerie was born Valerie Maynard in November 1945 in Woolwich. Her
father was a graduate engineer working for the Ministry of Defence. She grewup with her parents and younger brother first at Coulsden, then, in her laterteens, at Winterslow near Salisbury. She attended Whyteleafe and thenSalisbury Girls Grammar schools before going to Reading University, whereshe graduated with a BSc degree in geography. While at Reading, she joinedthe Rowing Club and was a member of the University Women’s Eight, onone occasion rowing the boat race course when her crew won the annual Headof the River race. She undertook Post Graduate Teacher’s Training at BathUniversity and then worked as a geography teacher in Devon and Lancashireand finally, Maidstone where she met her husband John.
In 1979, she made the decision to retrain as a Teacher of the Deaf, andundertook a year’s training at Manchester University. In the meantime, herparents moved to the village of Plaxtol, near Tonbridge, and Valerie and Johnwere married at Plaxtol Church in August 1980. In the same month, theymoved to Thanet, living for a short while in Broadstairs before settling inCliffsend in March 1982.
Valerie started work at the Hearing Impaired Unit at Hartsdown School,Margate in September 1980, and remained there until her retirement in 2004,becoming the head of the unit in 1984. In the 1980s, she joined Minster-in-Thanet Evening Women’s Institute, becoming a stalwart member and servingon the committee for many years, right up to her death, most recently assecretary. She will be particularly remembered as the inspiration, designerand motivating force behind the wall hanging - “Reflections of Minster” -commemorating 2000 years of history in Minster, and now permanentlydisplayed in the Minster Village Hall. She was also one of the organisers ofthe Sunshine Club, providing outings for elderly or infirm WI members. In1989, Valerie helped organise an outdoor historical pageant in Cliffsend.
Valerie was always creative, and passionate about arts and crafts. She wasa gifted artist and latterly became involved with card-making and paper crafts. After her retirement from full time teaching, she taught card craft groups andgave demonstrations. She also found time to pursue her other interests insewing and stitching, and in family history research.
Valerie became ill in August 2008 and was diagnosed with breast cancerin September. At first the prognosis was optimistic. But in October, her cancerspread and her condition became terminal and untreatable. Her great wishwas to remain at home and John devoted himself to her care during the last6 weeks of her life. Throughout this period, she showed immense bravery anddetermination at a time when she must have been feeling extremely frightenedand vulnerable, and she faced the end with great courage and a quiet, calmdignity. She passed away on 20 November.
Valerie will be remembered by her many friends and former pupils as aninspirational teacher and mentor, and as someone who was always ready tolisten or help. Her family will remember her as a loving and devoted daughter, sister and aunt, and John as his soul-mate and greatest friend for almost 30years.

Community Warden, Steve TaylorFirstly I would like to wish you all a very happy and safe 2009 and that
despite all the doom and gloom we at least here in Minster come through asbest we can.
I’m pleased to say that at the moment the village seems to be nice andsettled without too many issues. That doesn’t mean to say we can take oureye off the ball and we must ensure we keep things under control.
It’s great to see our new lollipop lady Karen on duty and making such adifference at what is a really busy spot. Please make sure you give her therespect she needs and deserves whilst on the road. I can assure you it’s nota good feeling when you think a motorist isn’t going to stop or completelyignores you.
I’m sure most of you will have either seen or met PC Darren Reed whohas joined us recently (Ed. See article below). I’d like to wish him well inhis new post and to thank him for already having an impact on things in thearea.
I am currently looking at a project along with your Neighbourhood Watchgroup that we hope will ensure Minster doesn’t get unwanted visitors at thedoor. The project is in its very early stages and I will up-date you when I canbut for now it’s very much a case of watch this space.
Finally I want to give a big thank you and well done to someone who,on the odd occasion have I’ve not always met eye to eye with.
He went out of his way to help a stranded motorist who had got a punctureby not only removing the damaged wheel but helped replace the good one.I’m not going to name him, it’s not something I do, but he knows who I’mreferring to, and I have made others aware of his good deed. The thing youshould know is that the motorist was none other that one of our local policeofficers!!!! Well done and again thanks.
Minster’s New Rural Beat BobbyPC Darren Reed tells us he has spent 13yrs in the force, 8 of which was
on Patrol teams and 5 on Armed Response. Darren lives locally in Birchingtonwith his wife and one youngster.
When asked why he applied for this position Darren told us he was local,it was a unique opportunity to work closely with the rural community andvillages, and also a chance for him to put his mark on how he wishes to policethe area. He’d like to be seen out and about listening to the concerns of thepublic and acting on what they want doing.
Darren says he believes in the “Old Fashioned Style” of policing, highvisibility and approachable. He looks forward to working closely with ourcommunity and he can be phoned at any time (number on page 2) and willrespond to all calls, or if anyone has concerns and wishes to speak to him inperson he is willing to visit you at home.
So MM says welcome Darren and we hope you enjoy working amongstus.

A fulllist will be published on our website below and in the local press at the endof the Rotary year in June. Why not visit our website www.rotary1120.org (click on clubs, club websitesand Ramsgate).

Minster Twinning AssociationBonjour mes amis and welcome to more exciting news from the Association. It seems like a long time has passed since Christmas and New Year, however,
all of us at the Twinning wish you all the best for the year to come and hope youenjoyed all of the festive season.
Now on to this year! Here are some events to put in your diary so you don’tmiss out on some of the best social and entertaining functions!
First to kick off this year is the Annual Race Night in the Village Hall. Anevent not to be missed because, not only does it get bigger and better each year, but unfortunately it is limited to the capacity of the Village Hall. So if you wantto be there, you need to get in quick and purchase your ticket/s to ride in thegreat Minster Race Night. Tickets cost a mere £12 per head and include a superbthree course meal plus, once you are through the door, you will get the chanceto be a jockey and ride your horse home.
The stakes aren’t high enough to make you a fortune, but the glory andprestige of winning the race is everything! If you have been before, you willwant to be there again; if you haven’t, then its time you stopped losing out.
Get your tickets from Bob at the Attic or contact Bernie Watler or any othermember of the Committee. This is a great night out so book your place earlyand avoid disappointment.
The Twinning Anniversary this year will be held in Armbouts-Cappel andshould be spectacular. If you were at the 2008 Anniversary in the village, you’llknow how good it was! Well we think that our French Twinning friends will goall out to show us that they can equal our celebration and, with the Twinningspirit in mind, will lay down the challenge for us to do even better next year thanthey do this year.
So how about a day out in France with a slap up meal, probably someentertainment and the opportunity to make some purchases on the boat onthe way home? What else have you got to do on a Sunday afternoon? So makea note of the date now – Sunday 17th May. An advert or more will appear inMinster Matters to keep you informed. We hope to book a coach for the eventand cost will depend on demand. So if you are interested in a great day out thenplease make your reservations as soon as possible with Bob at the Attic.
This article is now getting too long and I fear that Ray may edit me so I mustclose soon. One last thought before I go, all you parents of past and present year5 Pupils who so enjoyed the School Exchange and all you future parents of year5 pupils who will enjoy the School Exchange in years to come, think aboutsupporting us or joining us, we need new members and, more importantly, thesupport of the village.
One last date before I close – 7th June for a day out on the Rec!Remember.......Minster Does Matter, A Bientôt.

Minster- in- Thanet WI.Branch president Joan Backler welcomed members and guests to
our Christmas Party, on 9th December, but before the festivities beganthere was a minute's silence in memory of Valerie Hughes and Muriel
Arnett. Business was kept to a minimum and then it was on with the serious matter
of attacking the buffet tables laden with delicious goodies provided by the members, taxing our brains with a couple of quizzes and settling back to enjoy the 'in-house'entertainment of playlet, recitations and songs provided by intrepidmembers Mesdames Atkins, Backler, Butterworth, Hammond, Harbottle, Linihan,Richardson, Rose, Sharp and Tweedale, with Val Dyer acting as back-stage manager.
A raffle and Joan's farewell brought a most enjoyable and successful eveningto a close. A special mention must be made of Joan's son, John, who workedunstintingly throughout the evening as washer-up.
Sadly, the January meeting started with another minute's silence, this time inmemory of our oldest member Dorothy Hubbard, who had died shortly beforeChristmas.
It was reported that the November Sunshine Club outing to Wyevale GardenCentre for shopping and tea was enjoyable, and ideas for future trips were requested. It was also reported that the hamper raffle and chocolate stall at the Christmas Fairhad proved very profitable.
The Village Hall Committee has approved the siting of a plaque by theMillennium Wall Hanging as a memorial to Valerie Hughes, and there are plansfor a Muriel Arnett memorial bench.
The month's speaker, Don Wilks, gave an entertaining and enlightening talkon the Flora and Fauna of the Eastern and Western Capes of South Africa, wherehe and Ann had spent a holiday. Don's talk was illustrated by superlativephotography, even if those shots of snakes and a particularly hairy spider had somemembers shielding their eyes!
Details were given of our Birthday Dinner in February, a craft day, and ourpopular Wine and Wisdom evening to be held in March. A show of hands provedthat a proposed trip to see the televising of the Alan Tichmarch Show would bewell supported.
Our next meeting will be at 7.30pm on 10th February in the Village Hall, when Patsy Baker will give a talk on the History of Wigs. New members andvisitors will be welcome.
Last, but not least, we would like to say a huge THANK YOU to MinsterParish Council for the grant which enabled the purchase of two smart display boardsfor our notices and information. The boards have made such a difference to theclarity with which the notices, etc, can be displayed, and we really do appreciatethis kind grant.

Vicar’s LetterI would like to give a big “thank you” to everyone who helped make
our celebrations of Christmas such wonderful occasions.First of all to those who supported the Toy Service – over 130 boxes
were dispatched to “Operation Christmas Child”.Then there was the marvellous turn out for the Lychgate Carols.
Thanks to the Margate Salvation Army Band, Roy Bailey for the P.A.system and those who provided drinks and mince pies afterwards. £201was collected on behalf of the Pilgrims Hospice
The introduction of a Sunday Christingle Service was very wellsupported and £110 was raised for the work of the Childrens Society. Thanks to those who invited the young folk and prepared the Christingles.
Thanks too to all who came to our Christmas Eve Crib Service,Midnight Mass or Christmas Morning Communion. Finally, thanks toall those who decorated the church and to Chris Randall, our organist, and the choir for leading the worship.
It all added up to give a really wonderful atmosphere.
Minster Church Heating is up and running! After more than ten years fund-raising and a six year re-ordering
programme, the church heating was turned on for the first time on thefeast of the Epiphany (6th January)! The following Sunday the church was a balmy 15oC even though theoutside temperature had fallen to -6oC the previous night. Such was theunexpected warmth; some members of the congregation had to take offtheir coats!
This is wonderful news, even though the project is not yet completeand more funds need to be raised. There will be a celebratory “turningon”, hopefully in February.
May I take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supportedour efforts thus far, and promise you all a very warm welcome to churchin the future! Rev’d Bob Coles

Minster Flower ShowHello from the Minster Flower Show
committee and, yes we are preparing for theShow on Saturday 18th July (so put the datein your brand new diary or on the calendar!
A few reminders:-• We would like some help on Friday /
Saturday and Sunday with setting up / moving stuff / managingpeople and taking down. If you feel you can lend us some of yourtime please put your name / contact phone number / preferred dayand length of time available on a piece of paper and give it toKaren at Attwells or email it to [email protected] (subjectflower show help). Even half an hour would help us at crunchtimes of the show.
• The Theme for this year is "On the Water" with threephotographic sections being "Larking about on water"; "Awaterscape" and "Life in the water". We hope you enjoy thechallenge and want you to use your imaginations!
• It is our intention to change the admission rates in order tomaintain the standard of the Show given rising costs that we haveto pay. We discussed this issue for half of our last meeting andwent round in several circles. One of the reasons for the changeis to make life easier for you and the volunteers on the gates toknow exactly how much to pay. We have decided on £3 foreveryone keeping under 5's free. This decision was not takenlightly and we are aware it may spark some debate. Please dotalk to us (nicely); we did think it would still be value for moneycompared with other day out costs.
• You can buy 1 schedule and photocopy the picture / entryform for all family members. Children entering items or the SkateCompetition will still get free entry bands.
Launch day will be Saturday 9th May; 10-12 outside theGossip Shop. (put that on diary thing)
Thank you again for last year. We are looking for things tomake it as good for all the family this year. As usual any ideas /suggestions gratefully received by any Committee member (Karenat Attwells is a main contact for many of you, but you can emailaddress above, or talk to Danny or Bernie)

Minster MayhemsWe have just had a short holiday and are now back
practising hard for next year. We have already been invitedto the Rochester and Tenterden Folk Festivals and are veryexcited about representing the village at these major
International events (as well as Folk Week in Broadstairs). We will alsobe dancing on St George's Day, May Day and the Twinning Day in theVillage.
Anyone interested in joining, especially as this is a dying tradition!(as seen on the news) we are at The Old Schools from 5.15 - 6.30 ona Friday during term time. Come and join in to see if you like it.
It’s been a bit chilly lately, hasn’t it? While I willbe the first to admit I’m hoping spring is just aroundthe corner, the reality is, it’s still winter.
Eco-Tips:If it seems like it is impossible to keep your house
warm, check around your doors and windows to seeif you feel any drafts. If your house is being invadedby the cool Minster air, you might want to help stopthat by using draft stoppers or even rolled towels toprevent some of the air from entering.

IMPORTANT NOTICE - CREDIT CARD SCAMSince the beginning of the year the number of scam emails circulating and scam
telephone calls seem to have reached an all time high. One telephone scam is worth mentioning, the caller gives a staff number (which is
false), and promises a card rebate after raising questions about the misuse of your creditcard in a way that could lead you to believe the call is genuine, it then concludes byasking for your card number and card 3 digit security number.
NO CREDIT CARD COMPANY OR BANK WOULD DO THISTHIS A SCAMPlease do not give your card information to anyone no matter how legitimate they
might seem. Many thanks, MickPC Mick Wright, County Watch Liaison Officer
Thanks from the Women’s section of the British LegionWe the women’s section of the British Legion would like to take this opportunity
to thank everyone that has supported us in our fund raising events during 2008. Dueto your generosity we were able to send £1,600 to the benevolent fund and £353 to thepoppy appeal. This is always accepted gratefully by the charity that does so much tohelp the services whether they be veterans or present day personnel who find their selfin need because of injury or widows and dependants of those that have lost their lifein recent conflicts.
We would also like to thank The Minster & Monkton British Legion Club forhelping and supporting all our efforts as without yourselves and the Club we wouldnot be able to raise this money. Again many thanks and A Happy New Year to youall. R.B.L. Women’s Section.

MINSTER PARISH COUNCILMeeting 13th January 2009There is very little of interest to report from this meeting. The Chairman and Assistant Clerk have met with Eastonways to discuss
possible amendments to routing of their services through Minster to allowfor greater and easier usage of the services by residents. A meeting was stillto be arranged with Stagecoach and Members would be advised of the outcomein due course.
Members considered a letter which had been received from a concernedresident with reference to the street lighting in the area of the High Streetadjacent to Norton Drive.
Danny Day had reported further flooding in Watchester Lane and he toldthe Members that the drains in the area needed cleaning, and in part failureto keep the ditches in the vicinity cleared was also a cause for this continuingproblem. The Chairman stated he would raise this issue at his meeting withthe Highways Liaison Officer.

The Peoples’ Millions GrantJust a brief letter to say a big thank you to all those people who gave so
much of their time and support to the Parish Council’s project for the MinsterPedal Break. Councillor Bob Grove as Chairman of MATCH organized agreat campaign, with the help of so many, to try to secure the £50000 awardfor the Village and sadly we were not successful.
However I do need to make particular reference to the invaluable helpand advice received from the staff of MM and to Karen and Jenny at Attwell’swho allowed the area adjoining the shop to be used as a “voting station” toremind and encourage residents to phone in.
Finally residents and friends of Minster thank you for voting for yourproject; we nearly did it.
