THE MATCH: The LA Galaxy (6-1-1, 19 points) return home to face Real Salt Lake (3-4-1, 10 points) at 5 p.m. PT on Sunday, April 28 at Dignity Health Sports Park. The two sides are set to face each other again after each earned a lopsided win in 2018. The Galaxy defeated RSL on June 9 at Dignity Health Sports Park, with a brace from Ibrahimović and an added goal from Kamara securing the result. But the Galaxy fell 6-2 to Real Salt Lake on Sept. 1 at Rio Tinto Stadium. The Galaxy hold the all-time series advantage at 15-14-9. Earlier in the week, the Galaxy secured a draw against Minnesota United FC to remain unbeaten in six consecutive matches. Neither team managed to score in the defensive duel as the game finished 0-0 at Allianz Field. NUMBERS TO NOTE:
• LA Galaxy have not won their first six matches at home to start a season since 1996. • With a win on Sunday, the LA Galaxy would enjoy the longest winning streak at home since 2015. • Ibrahimovic is on track to set the fastest goal scoring pace of any player from the start of their league career.
o Ibrahimovic has 28 goals in 32 games. o Ibrahimovic has two games remaining to surpass the total of Mamadou Diallo, who had 32 goals in his
first 34 games in 2000-01.
LA GALAXY MIDFIELDER ROMAIN ALESSANDRINI UNDERGOES SUCCESSFUL SURGERY: LA Galaxy midfielder Romain Alessandrini has undergone successful meniscus root repair at the Cedars Sinaï Kerlan Jobe Institute in Santa Monica, the club announced today. He is expected to be out until September following the surgery, which was performed by Bert Mandelbaum and Clint Soppe. Alessandrini, 30, suffered the injury during the LA Galaxy match vs. the Houston Dynamo on April 19. He originally signed with the club ahead of the 2017 season, and has since made 61 appearances while scoring 24 goals and adding 22 assists. The Galaxy return to MLS action this Sunday, April 28 at 5 p.m. PT against Real Salt Lake live on Spectrum SportsNet. Next Up: The LA Galaxy travel to New York to face New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena on Saturday, May 4 at 11 a.m. PT (ESPN).

LA GALAXY HEAD COACH GUILLERMO BARROS SCHELOTTO On Julian Araujo’s injury… “I think he had a really good game. The defense had a good game. They put a lot of time, the ball in our box but we’re always in really good positions. But I thought that he got something with the ankle, but I think he’ll be ready for this Sunday.” On Julian Araujo being ready for Sunday… “Yeah, I think so. I hope, I think, that just somebody kicked him.” On the field… “I think we feel like we not play really good. Maybe we feel run out but just in the start of the game, we managed the ball we had the ball but after 30 minutes I think they pushed us.. but the good thing is that the defense was really good.” On getting points… ”I am happy with the point, of course. If we win next Sunday again in Salt Lake, we will be very happy with this point. But I feel like we didn’t play very good and didn’t play like we could play so I need to know why to work about that and play really good with Salt Lake.” On Romain [Alessandrini]’s injury… “No, I talked with the doctor we are going to wait until we can and then take a position about his future. I don’t know all of things about the injury he has, I think maybe it’s better to talk with the doctor.” LA GALAXY FORWARD ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC On what Minnesota did that made things difficult for him… “I mean, I don’t think they did anything special. I think it became easy for them because I didn’t really have chances, so if you don’t have chances it’s easy for the defenders because they don’t have to react. I felt I didn’t get that clear chance to be able to do something, so I think it was easy work for them.” On in the field was difficult to play on tonight… “I think it was soft. You could see that it also was difficult, you have to adjust your movement up through the field and it wasn’t the best field.” On if it felt like a win getting a point even after playing poorly…
“If the opponent was better, yes. I didn’t see the opponent as being good, so I see it more as we lost two points." LA GALAXY GOALKEEPER DAVID BINGHAM On defensive effort… “No, it’s always good to put a shutout regardless if you’re home or away. At the end of the day, we made some bad turnovers and that lead to their chances and if we can just eliminate our turnovers in our third, we’ll be a lot better off.” On coming out with a defensive point… “Yeah, we got a shutout and that’s one goal, but the main goal is to get three points. It’s better to win 4-3 than to tie 0-0. At the end of the day, we feel like we dropped two points here. Obviously, we played very poorly, and we know that, and we have to turn that around and get back home and get three points on the weekend now.” On getting a point … “Yeah, that’s always a plus. When you don’t play your best and you’re still picking up points, especially on the road, that’s encouraging. At home that’s not acceptable, we need three points this weekend and we need to get home and get recovered and get ready to go.” On the field factoring into this match… ”The field was terrible. It was one of the worst grass fields we’ve played on in a long time, but they deal with some harsh weather here and that’s just part of the game. It definitely plays a factor in it but at the end of the day, we have to do better and look at ourselves and come out with a better mindset.” On having a six-game unbeaten streak… “Yeah of course you take that, but I think you guys look more into that than we do. We need to get focused and take it one game at a time. Those six games are behind us. It doesn’t matter if you win six in a row if you lose the next 10. We have to have the mentality when we go home on the weekend, we have to get three points and it’s a big game for us.”

THREE TEAMS, THREE WINS
For the first time in club history, every professional team in the Real Salt Lake organization secured a victory over its opponents during the weekend of April 19-20.
The weekend began with RSL visiting 2019 MLS expansion side FC Cincinnati for the first time on Friday night to open the weekend’s proceedings. RSL claimed a dominant 3-0 victory in Ohio to win its first match away from Rio Tinto Stadium on the year, seeing two goals from Albert Rusnák with Sam Johnson adding a third and a shutout performance from Andrew Putna solidify the victory.
In the second match of the weekend, Real Monarchs SLC rebounded from its worst loss of the season with a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind win over San Antonio FC. The match marked the first time since 2016 that the Monarchs had topped San Antonio. The match didn’t come easy as the Monarchs fell behind 2-0 in the early stages of the match before clawing its way back in the second half, scoring three unanswered goals. The Monarchs found goals from Maikel Chang, Jack Blake and Kyle Coffee to secure victory.
In 2018 the club welcomed Utah Royals FC to the family, joining RSL, Real Monarchs SLC and the RSL Academy, setting forth the opportunity for all three teams to potentially assert its dominance on the American soccer landscape in any given weekend. Although the Utah Hattrick didn’t happen in URFC’s first year, its first match of the 2019 season saw the team top the Washington Spirit 1-0 behind a goal from Lo’eau LaBonta and a shutout by Nicole Barnhart to lock in the club’s three wins.
The Utah Hattrick has nearly happened on several occasions but with some teams playing in the middle of the week and some at the weekend, the true hattrick had yet to be completed.
Both teams will return to action this weekend in an effort to secure another three victories beginning with the Monarchs who will face off with 2019 USL Championship expansion side Austin Bold FC on Friday at 6:30p MT. Utah Royals FC are on the road on Saturday as it faces the Orlando Pride on Saturday at 5:30p MT, followed by RSL who will do battle with the LA Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park on Sunday at 6:00p MT.
RECAP: RSL 2-1 ORL
Real Salt Lake (2-4-1, 7 points) topped Orlando City SC 2-1 on Saturday night at Rio Tinto Stadium.
FW Sam Johnson scored his first goal for RSL and MF Damir Kreilach added his second of the season while GK Nick Rimando finished with four saves in the victory.
RSL struck first after 17 minutes when Johnson notched his first goal for RSL when his left-footed rocket from a tight angle easily found the back of the net past Orlando City goalkeeper Brian Rowe. In the 28th minute, Head Coach Mike Petke was forced into a change as MF Everton Luiz was brought off due to injury and was replaced by MF Nick Besler. RSL was able to use
the goal from Johnson to weather the storm for the remainder of the first half of play to take the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Salt Lake started the second half on the front foot as Kreilach hammered home his second goal of the season in the 55th minute to double the lead on an assist from FW Jefferson Savarino. Orlando City clawed its way back into the match, putting RSL under immense pressure in the final 15 minutes of the match. The visitors cut the lead in half through Portuguese playmaker Nani as his curling freekick beat the wall and Rimando from 25 yards out. As Orlando pressed for the equalizer, RSL’s backline stood firm to claim the full three points at home with a 2-1 victory.
RECAP: RSL 0-1 SEA
Real Salt Lake (1-4-1, 4 points) fell to Western Conference foe Seattle Sounders FC 1-0 on Saturday night at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, seeing the club drop its fourth straight match.
Seattle found the game’s only goal when Nicolas Lodeiro volleyed home at the back post in the 18th minute to put the hosts ahead. The goal came after continued pressure from Seattle that RSL negotiated well through the first 15 minutes of the match. The next 30 minutes of the match saw RSL and Seattle trade possession through the center of the field. FW Sam Johnson was a presence in the attack during his first start in Major League Soccer, providing a threat to the Sounders FC back line throughout the first half.
RSL came out of the halftime break calmer on the ball, maintaining possession and creating opportunities to score around the Sounders FC penalty area. Johnson nearly found the equalizer in the 52nd minute but hits left-footed effort from inside the area skipped just wide of the far post. In the 74th minute FW Jefferson Savarino saw RSL’s best chance of the night go beckoning when he brought the ball down beautifully inside the penalty area before firing a shot off the upright of the goal with the outside of his right foot.
RSL Head Coach Mike Petke elected to bring on FW Tate Schmitt and MF Sebastian Saucedo in the second half as the Utah side looked for the equalizer that never came as the match ended 1-0 in favor of Sounders FC.
RECAP: RSL 2-4 FCD
Real Salt Lake (1-3-1, 4 points) fell 4-2 on Saturday night to Western Conference foe FC Dallas at Rio Tinto Stadium. The loss marks the first home loss of the season for Head Coach Mike Petke and RSL.
RSL got goals from FW Jefferson Savarino and DF Marcelo Silva, but an early goal conceded, injury and red card left a hill to steep to climb for the comeback effort.
From the outset RSL was put under pressure, going behind after just one minute when Carlos Gruezo smashed a ball from inside the box past GK Nick Rimando for the early lead. RSL was forced into shuffling its starting group early as DF Erik Holt left the match in the 11th minute after suffering an apparent ankle injury just outside his penalty area. The hosts again fell under adversity in the first half when

MF Damir Kreilach was shown a red card in the 16th minute after an altercation near midfield, forcing RSL to play a man down the rest of the match.
RSL leveled the match against the run of play in the 31st minute when Savarino struck from distance with a curling effort. However, just one minute later FC Dallas regained the lead through Paxton Pomykal when he jumped on a loose clearance inside the box before slotting past Rimando.
A flurry of goals within 20 minutes of the start of the second half saw both RSL and FC Dallas on their heels. For FC Dallas, Pomykal notched his second of the evening when his deflected shot flew past Rimando for the 3-1 lead. Just two minutes later, Silva scored his first goal for RSL when his headed effort from an MF Albert Rusnák corner kick cut the lead in half. However, in the 69th minute FC Dallas regained its two-goal advantage when Jesus Ferreira slid home at the near post to bring the score to 4-2. As RSL continued to press to draw itself level at home, it couldn’t find the back of the net as the match ended 4-2 in favor of FC Dallas.
RECAP: LAFC 2-1 RSL
Real Salt Lake (1-2-1, 4 points) fell to Western Conference rival LAFC 2-1 on Saturday night at Banc of California Stadium to cap a two-match road stretch.
The first half began physical almost immediately with both teams trading tough fouls early on. RSL did well to absorb the pressure from LAFC with GK Nick Rimando saving the host’s best chance of the first stanza, pawing away Carlos Vela’s freekick in the 29th minute. RSL made the breakthrough in the 34th minute when MF Damir Kreilach calmly put away a penalty kick after MF Sebastian Saucedo drew the foul inside the box. LAFC quickly equalized through Diego Rossi when he slammed home a shot from 10 yards to draw the match level in the 40th minute.
RSL thought it had taken the lead in the 50th minute when Saucedo sent a wonderful curling shot into the bottom corner of the net before the referee judged him to be offside on the initial deflection that led to the shot. From then LAFC applied steady pressure to RSL, earning several chances to make the breakthrough but the RSL defense stood firm.
In the 84th minute RSL went down to 10 men when MF Justin Portillo received a red card in his MLS debut. LAFC made the breakthrough in the first minute of stoppage time when defender Walker Zimmerman unleashed a shot from outside the box that curled away from Rimando.

RECAP: DC 5-0 RSL
Real Salt Lake (1-1-1, 4 points) fell to D.C. United 5-0 at Audi Field on Saturday night, suffering its first loss of the 2019 MLS regular season.
Through the opening 30 minutes of the match, RSL saw several chances to get on the scoresheet but weren’t able to put the ball in the back of the net. In the 34 th minute the match changed when VAR judged a foul inside the RSL penalty area. United forward Wayne Rooney stepped up to the spot and converted the shot before adding his second goal of the match in the 41st minute. In second half stoppage time, RSL went down to 10 men when FW Jefferson Savarino was shown a red card.
The second 45 minutes didn’t fall in RSL’s favor as Rooney earned his hattrick to triple the lead. Things got worse for RSL as DF Marcelo Silva was shown a second yellow card and a subsequent red card in the 67th minute. From there, the hosts notched two more goals through Lucas Rodriguez and Ulises Segura to solidify the 5-0 scoreline.
BAIRD CALLED TO U.S. MARCH CAMP
Real Salt Lake FW Corey Baird has been called by in by U.S. National Team Head Coach Gregg Berhalter for upcoming friendlies against Ecuador on March 21 at Orlando City Stadium and Chile on March 26 at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston. He will join the U.S. following RSL’s match this weekend against D.C. United (Saturday, 6 p.m. MT) and return prior to RSL’s next home match against FC Dallas on March 30.
“Getting a second call-up is awesome,” Baird said. “I’m looking forward to getting into a camp that some of the European guys are into and I’m hoping to do what I did last camp to impress Berhalter and become a guy he can trust to call in to camp and rely on.” Baird, 22, is in his second year with Real Salt Lake after signing prior to the 2018 season. A product of Real Salt Lake’s Academy, he has one assist in two matches this season for RSL (1-0-1, 4 points) after leading all rookies in scoring with eight goals, adding five assists in his 2018 MLS AT&T Rookie of the Year campaign. “Corey has earned these call-ups,” RSL Head Coach Mike Petke said. “In the first two games he’s had a hand in both of our goals. He’s continuing his form from last year. We are thrilled for Corey and this is fully-deserved.” Baird joins the U.S. National Team for his second senior call-up after notching an assist in two starts during January camp this year. The Escondido, California, native appeared for the U.S. U-17, U-18, U-20 and U-23 National Teams and prior to signing with Real Salt Lake was a three-time NCAA National Champion at Stanford University. “We are excited for Corey and the opportunities he is earning with the U.S.,” RSL General Manager Craig Waibel said. “He’s shown progress with RSL and took advantage of his chance in January camp, so it’s great to see him being rewarded for his work.” Berhalter will continue the evaluation process of the National Team pool in his second camp in charge as 24 players have been called to gather beginning March 17 in Orlando. Both matches will be shown live at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2, UniMas and UDN.

Building on the themes of last camp, building on the style of play of last camp, but also now evaluating a new group of players,” Berhalter said. “I think we made progress in the first camp and I think it’s now asking if we can take it to another level. When we are done with this camp, it’s really important that we have a good idea of our strongest group of players heading into the Gold Cup.”
RECAP: RSL 1-0 VAN
Real Salt Lake (1-0-1, 4 points) claimed its first win of the season on Saturday night, topping Vancouver Whitecaps FC 1-0 in front of 17,096 at Rio Tinto Stadium. MF Albert Rusnák’s goal in the first half was enough to usher the club to a home-opening victory.
RSL started the game on the front foot, maintaining possession in the attacking third to force several corner kick chances. In the 21st minute, FW Corey Baird drew a penalty kick which Rusnák easily smashed into the top corner of the net to open the scoring. As the first half drew on, RSL stayed staunch defensively, keeping Whitecaps FC at bay to take a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, RSL showed its defensive stability, thwarting every chance the Whitecaps had in the second 45 minutes. RSL nearly found a second goal through MF Damir Kreilach but ‘Caps goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau turned the header onto the post. The Utah side saw the match out in stoppage time to claim the 1-0 victory.
RSL 2018 YEAR IN REVIEW In its 14th season in Major League Soccer, RSL found its way back to the playoffs for the tenth time in twelve seasons. Using a core mix of young RSL Academy Products and veteran presence, the club was able to amass a run to the Western Conference Semifinal after finishing the regular season sixth in the Western Conference.
RSL ended the 2018 regular season with the most minutes played by Homegrown players, totaling 10,826 minutes. Led by reigning AT&T MLS Rookie of the Year Corey Baird, RSL made its mark on the league landscape by showing success can be achieved by finding the right mix of veteran players and young talent grown through the Academy.
RSL finished the regular season with a 14-13-7 (49 points) record in Mike Petke’s first full season in charge of the club. RSL entered the playoffs on the back of 7-7-3 run over the last half of the season. RSL was led by Damir Kreilach who scored 12 goals and added 8 assists during the regular season before adding another three goals and one assist in the playoffs. The club’s 11-2-4 (35 points) home record from the regular season helped propel them into the playoffs. The club’s home record finished tied with Portland for the best home record in the Western Conference.
Second-year MF Albert Rusnák made significant impacts in nearly every match he featured in for the club in 2018, scoring 10 goals while providing seven assists in the regular season before notching another goal in Leg 1 of the Western Conference Semifinal against SKC. In 2018, MF Jefferson Savarino started and played in 32 matches for RSL in his second season in Utah, Savarino scored seven goals and provided 11 assists in 2,853 minutes. Savarino was recognized on MLS’s 22Under22 List at #5.
DF Brooks Lennon made the move from forward to right back in the absence of DF Tony Beltran – as the steady defender was out the entire season after suffering a knee injury late in the 2017 season. Lennon filled in admirably and started in 31 matches in the right back position, contributing five assists while steadily improving on the defensive side of the ball throughout the year, earning the RSL Academy product the club’s Defensive Player of the Year honors.
On the opposite side, DF Aaron Herrera stepped into the left back role and provided stability over the final 14 matches of the season. The rookie out of the University of New Mexico and another RSL Academy product moved from his typical right back spot to the left side and nailed down the starting role, seeing RSL to a 4-1-4 record in his first nine starts at the position.
DF Justen Glad was a consistent presence in the middle of the back line, partnering most often with veteran DF Marcelo Silva and MLS debutant DF Nick Besler, who captained the USL’s Real Monarchs SLC to the USL Regular Season Championship in 2017. For his part, Glad was second in MLS with 92 interceptions and fourth in the league with 27 blocks. All the while, he started in 50 consecutive matches, the active leading streak when it came to an end on October 18.
GK Nick Rimando, meanwhile, turned in another stellar season, starting in 33 matches while posting a 13-13-7 record with seven shutouts and a
1.73 goals against average. The MLS all-time goalkeeping leader extended his career marks to 209 wins and 144 shutouts while stopping two more penalties to give him an astounding 24 PK saves in his illustrious career.

SEASON
Signed as a Homegrown Player during the offseason, Corey Baird flourished in his first professional season, registering eight goals to lead all rookies while also tallying five assists. Baird established himself as an impact player for RSL as the club compiled a 6-2-2 record in regular season matches where he recorded either a goal or an assist. The 22-year-old’s contributions were crucial to RSL securing a spot in the postseason, as the club finished the season ranked sixth in the Western Conference (49 points, 14-13-7 overall record).
Baird received his first U.S. Men’s National Team call-up after his stellar rookie season, joining Head Coach Gregg Berhalter’s first camp in charge of the team for January camp. He totaled 145 minutes in his first two appearances with the senior national team.
Baird became the third academy product ever, and second in the last three years, to win the AT&T MLS Rookie of the Year Award, following in the footsteps of 2016 winner and former Stanford University teammate Jordan Morris. The rookie scored his first professional goal in only his second MLS game ever, scoring in an appearance off the bench on March 30 against Toronto FC. A week later, Baird started his first ever match and registered his first professional assist in a 2-1 victory over Vancouver Whitecaps

11 SEASONS
Real Salt Lake earned its first playoff win since 2013 on Thursday in a 3-2 victory over LAFC in the Knockout Round of the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs. That sends RSL through to the Western Conference Semifinals and a meeting with archrival Sporting Kansas City on Sunday, November 4 at Rio Tinto Stadium, with the second leg on Sunday, November 11. MF Damir Kreilach scored two goals and set up the third when FW Jefferson Savarino’s shot was deflected in for an own goal. Overall, RSL is 6-8-7 in 21 matches in the MLS Cup Playoffs with three matches going to a shootout and RSL winning in two of those three shootouts.

NICK RIMANDO On May 15, RSL celebrated a 3-2 victory over visiting D.C. United, a result forever known as legendary GK Nick Rimando’s 200th career MLS reg. season victory … Now in his 20th MLS season and known as both the MLS “G.O.A.T.” (“Greatest of All Time”) and the “Wall of the Wasatch,” Rimando owns virtually every meaningful record in league annals, with 490 games played (all starts), 210 wins, 145 shutouts, 43,000+ minutes and 1,642 saves, amongst other records … Longtime teammate and RSL Captain Kyle Beckerman’s reaction? “Let’s get 300.”

KYLE BECKERMAN
With each and every appearance, RSL Captain Kyle Beckerman extends his all-time MLS marks for field players with 470 GP, 439 starts and 39,251 minutes played … As a result of his consistent service, Beckerman also leads the all-time tally in fouls committed (714) and yellow cards (114). The 2-1 loss at Columbus on June 30 marked KB5’s 300th career reg. season start for RSL. Beckerman’s assist on the game-opening goal on August 25 against Colorado was the 50th of his MLS career, making him the 22nd player in MLS history to record at least 40 goals and 50 assists in his career. Also, on that list are five former RSL players – Javier Morales, Jason Kreis, Jeff Cunningham, Chris Klein and Clint Mathis. Beckerman is joined by GK Nick Rimando as the lone RSL men to appear in all 24 of the club’s all-time postseason contests, as the former Miami Fusion castoffs have guided the club to the playoffs in nine of the last 11 seasons. Beckerman was the first-ever MLS field player to appear in 400 or more games, joining GKs Rimando (now 492 – all starts) and Kevin Hartman (416). HEAD COACH MIKE PETKE
Real Salt Lake Head Coach Mike Petke returns for his second full season at the helm after leading the club to the Western Conference Semifinals a season ago. Petke led RSL to a Western Conference best 11-2-4 home record in 2018 to help usher the club to a 14-13-7 (49 points) overall record a season ago. Heading into the 2019 season, Petke now owns a 27-25-11 (92 points) record in regular season play with RSL.
Together with General Manager Craig Waibel, Petke has helped lead the way in “playing your kids” with 12 RSL Academy products currently featuring on the RSL roster. Petke has helped lead a veteran core of MLS legends such as Kyle Beckerman, Nick Rimando and Tony Beltran mixed with some of the league’s top Homegrown talent that made a significant run in the MLS Cup playoffs a season ago. Prior to his time at RSL, Petke was head coach of the New York Red Bulls for two seasons in 2013 and 2014. He led the Red Bulls to their first Supporters' Shield in 2013 and took the team to the Eastern Conference Championship in 2014. As a player, Petke – a hard-nosed defender – made 307 MLS appearances for the Red Bulls/MetroStars, D.C. United and Colorado Rapids across 13 seasons in the league, earning two US national team caps along the way.
GENERAL MANAGER CRAIG WAIBEL
In the midst of a busy off-season, Real Salt Lake retained General Manager Craig Waibel with a new multi-year contract. Real Salt Lake has reached the postseason in two of the last three seasons since Waibel’s first full season in the role of General Manager and has increased the club’s win total in each season since his appointment as GM in 2015
Waibel originally came to Real Salt Lake to join the coaching staff prior to the 2014 season and saw a meteoric rise in the years that followed. After his first season, he was promoted to Technical Director and then General Manager and under his guidance, Real Salt Lake made the playoffs in 2016 and 2018.
Over the last four years, RSL has seen an increase in player development, with six products of the Real Salt Lake Academy seeing significant playing
time in the 2018 season. Over the course of the season, RSL Homegrown players accounted for 10,826 minutes in the regular season, most of any team in Major League Soccer. Earlier this year, two of those players, DF Justen Glad and FW Corey Baird, received call-ups to the U.S. National Team January camp and Baird started in friendlies against Panama and Costa Rica – picking up an assist in his international debut against Panama. Baird also was voted 2018 AT&T MLS Rookie of the Year, the first RSL player in club history to achieve that honor.
Additionally, RSL has had young players representing the club in the annual MLS 24-Under-24 list each year. In 2015, FW Joao Plata was ranked No. 9.
In 2016, Glad (15) and DF/FW Jordan Allen (16) were both on the list. Then in 2017, Glad (18) was joined by newcomers MF Albert Rusnák (15) and FW Jefferson Savarino (22). This year, the list was reduced to 22-Under-22 and RSL had three players on the list – Savarino (5), Glad (9) and DF Brooks Lennon (15), who earned RSL Defender of the Year honors in his first season as a right back in 2018.
In total, RSL has signed 12 Homegrown players in the last four years, continuing the club’s philosophy of developing players from within the organization. Along with Rusnák and Savarino last year, other key international additions have included MF Damir Kreilach in 2018 and DF Marcelo Silva in 2017, while the club has high hopes for DF Nedum Onuoha as well. Rusnák has been the club’s leader in goals and assists over the last two seasons, winning club MVP and Golden Boot honors in 2017. In 2018, Kreilach stepped into the lineup and earned club MVP and Golden Boot honors.
Prior to his work with Real Salt Lake, Waibel had a decorated 12-year playing career. In his time with the LA Galaxy, San Jose Earthquakes and Houston Dynamo, the hard-nosed defender won four MLS Cup titles, one Supporters’ Shield and one Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championship. His four MLS Cup titles ranks tied for fourth in MLS history, trailing only Landon Donovan, Jeff Agoos, Todd Dunivant and Brian Mullan.
ALBERT RUSNÁK & JEFFERSON SAVARINO RETURN
Albert Rusnák returns to RSL for the 2019 season, signing a contract extension that will see him remain with the club through the 2021 season.
The Slovakian star, 24, made 61 appearances in two seasons with the club, scoring 17 goals and adding 21 assists. In 2018, Rusnák was RSL’s second top-scorer, scoring 10 goals during the regular season while adding seven assists. A rising star in Major League Soccer, Rusnák has also been a key contributor on the international stage for Slovakia. He had two goals in six caps at the U-19 level, then notched four goals in 10 appearances at the U-21 level. In 2016, he made his debut for the Slovakia National Team and boasts one cap to his credit, with many more expected to come.
Starting and playing in 32 matches for RSL in his second season in Utah, Jefferson Savarino scored seven goals and provided 11 assists in 2,853 minutes. Savarino was recognized on MLS’s 22Under22 List at #5.
Savarino has 22 goals and 12 assists in 48 matches in the Venezuelan Primera Division and has also added one goal in four matches in this year's Copa Libertadores, featuring the top teams from around South America. He was promoted from Zulia's U-20 team to the first team in January of 2015, at age 18.
INFLUX OF RSL YOUTH

RSL currently boasts 12 Academy products on its roster with that number rising from a season ago with the addition of Julian Vazquez, Luis Arriaga, Erik Holt, Tate Schmitt and David Ochoa, along with the reacquaintance of Donny Toia.
TONY BELTRAN AND LUKE MULHOLLAND RE-
SIGN From 2014-2017, Luke Mulholland averaged 30 games, 24 starts, 2,073 minutes, four goals and 3.75 assists per season. In 2018, he was limited to just two appearances after a hamstring strain and back surgery kept him on the sideline for much of the season. Now back and ready to contribute in 2019, he enters his sixth MLS season – all with Real Salt Lake – ready to again be a steady contributor in the midfield.
Originally acquired by RSL prior to the 2014 season after a wildly successful stint with the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the former NASL, the determined midfielder has spent his entire Major League Soccer career as a member of RSL. Since 2014, Mulholland has appeared in 122 matches, 97 of which were starts. Mulholland has notched 16 goals and 16 assists through 8,384 regular season minutes during his time with RSL. The Preston, England native has also seen time in the MLS Cup Playoffs in three of his five seasons at RSL, totaling 346 minutes in five postseason appearances, including two games for RSL in its run to the Western Conference Semifinals in 2018.
In constructing the roster for the 2019 season, Real Salt Lake was able to add a two-time MLS All-Star and 2009 MLS Cup champion in 12-year veteran Tony Beltran. While Beltran had been with RSL for all of his 11 MLS seasons, his return for a 12th season was like a new addition on the field, as he missed the entire 2018 season after suffering an ACL injury on October 15, 2017.
Originally selected by Real Salt Lake with the third overall pick in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, Beltran has spent his entire career with RSL. Since making his debut in April of 2008, he has been a staple in the RSL lineup, starting in 230 of his 245 regular season appearances. From 2012-2016, he averaged 28 starts and over 2,500 minutes per season, making him a mainstay in Salt Lake’s starting XI over that stretch. In his career, he has one goal – which came in 2017 - and 12 assists while establishing himself as one of the premier 1v1 defending outside backs in the league. For his efforts, he was named to the MLS All-Star teams in 2013 and 2015 and made three appearances for the U.S. National Team in 2013 and 2014.

Kyle Beckerman – With one more match-winning assist, Beckerman will become RSL’s all-time leader in match- winning assists (19). He is currently tied with Javier Morales at 18. REAL SALT LAKE’S GROWING PYRAMID In 2015, RSL expanded its development pyramid with the addition of Real Monarchs SLC, one of several MLS-operated expansion clubs in the now 33- team USL. Former Head Coach Freddy Juarez – now an assistant with the first team - had enjoyed success developing homegrown players at the RSL-Arizona Academy in Casa Grande, Ariz., prior to moving to the professional ranks. For 2018, the Monarchs called the newly-constructed Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, Utah, home.
In August of 2017, Real Salt Lake's vaunted Arizona-based Academy moved north to the club’s primary training center in Herriman, Utah, approximately 20 minutes southwest of Rio Tinto Stadium. The $78 million facility now serves as the club’s cornerstone, its daily training home opening in 2018 for both of the club's men’s professional teams – Real Salt Lake (MLS) and Real Monarchs (USL) - while centralizing the club's U-19, U-17 and future U-15 development academy youth selections. The Herriman facility also provides adjacencies for an on-site charter school with STEM disciplines (Science/Technology/Engineering/Math) for nearly 300 local boys and girls .
Led by Martin Vasquez – who played 17 years professionally in both the U.S. and Mexico before coaching with LA Galaxy, Chivas USA, Bayern Munich and the U.S. National Team – RSL’s Academy setup looks to continue its perennial U.S. Soccer Development Academy success integrating with the club’s professional sides. Under his guidance, Vasquez and the RSL Academy have developed a setup that has produced professionals year-after-year for seven years, laying the groundwork for a system that has produced 16 homegrowns for RSL since 2011. The January signing of three-time Stanford national champion Corey Baird brings RSL’s list of Academy products on the current roster to eight, joining FW Jordan Allen, DF Justen Glad, MF Jose Hernandez, DF Aaron Herrera, DF Brooks Lennon and FW Sebastian Saucedo. Other past Homegrown signings include Nico Muniz, Donny Toia, Lalo Fernandez, Benji Lopez, Phanuel Kavita, Danilo Acosta, Fito Ovalle and Ricardo Velazco, while former RSL DF Carlos Salcedo was signed to a standard MLS contract.
Since coming to RSL at the beginning of last season as head coach of the Real Monarchs, Petke was stricken with the opportunity to work with someone of Vasquez’s background. Now as RSL’s boss, he works in lock- step with Vasquez as the two draw up the blueprints to the future of Real Salt Lake.
“He’s been at the highest level as a player and a coach. How we’re able to have somebody like this at our academy blows my mind. But I’m extremely excited about it,” Petke said. “He just has a deep knowledge of the game. And he has that temperament of dealing with kids coming up through the ranks. His knowledge of tactics is spot on. It coincides with how I like to play and how we want to play. And he is able to get the most out of these kids psychologically, physically and tactically. My hat’s off to him. I love working with him.”
Last December in North Logan, Utah, RSL Owner Dell Loy Hansen ceremoniously opened the first of eight planned “regional training centers” across Utah and Arizona to be built in the next two years. Each $5-6 million RTC houses a classroom, as well as an indoor and outdoor field, dedicated to fulfilling a curriculum based on the club's vision and mission for youth soccer training and education, and the continued development of both recreational and competitive pre-Academy (ages 7-14) initiatives across the InterMountain West.
In January, RSL announced that it would extend its youth development presence in Arizona, as Sereno Soccer Club merged with Legacy Soccer Club under the Claret-and-Cobalt umbrella, with more than 7,000 boys and girls between the ages of 4-18 now composing a Phoenix-based “RSL
Arizona” setup. The partnership allows Real Salt Lake to continue its Arizona-based cultivation of talent, as Sereno has long been one of the premier youth soccer clubs in the United States and the top club in Arizona. During its nearly four decades of history, Sereno accounts for over 150 Arizona State Championships, 12 Regional Championships, four National Finalists and 2 National Championships.
The newly-combined RSL-Arizona has developed more than 30 professional players in the men's and women's games' highest levels, while boasting more than 70 players who have represented 14 countries at the youth or senior level amongst its alumni base. Notable Sereno products with ties to Real Salt Lake include current RSL FW Brooks Lennon and former players such as Robbie Findley. Current and former U.S. Women's National Team icons hailing from the Arizona development juggernaut include Julie Ertz and Sydney Leroux, among others.
In 2016, the RSL Foundation was established, created with the goals of being active in the community year-round, utilizing the popularity and reach of RSL and the Monarchs in promoting health and wellness for children throughout the region, engaging supporters of soccer to raise funds and volunteer time for various local initiatives. Projects undertaken by and supported with Foundation resources include the Club’s “Unified Team” with Utah Special Olympics, state-wide field restorations, referee training and community service.
