SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH CHRIS LEITCH On the match:“It was a big goal for us, we definitely needed that, it had big implications for sure. But I don’t think it was against the run of play. I think for large stretches of the game, we showed some really good patience, and we just lacked that final run, that final pass. On that particular play, it was good to see that come off; I think it was Wondo with the assist and Vako with the goal. Really good play there to finally break through. Otherwise, really disciplined Vancouver team.” On the character to get a crucial point after previous road struggles:“It says a lot. First and foremost, these guys knew what was on the line tonight, and they didn’t run away from it, they ran right to it and took on the challenge head on, and really dug in. It was a good hard fought result here in a tough place to play against obviously the best team in the West as it stands now.” On the finale against Minnesota:“I think you’ve got to approach it the same way we have this game, the same way we did against Portland last game. It’s running towards these games and understanding the magnitude of the situation, and wanting that on our shoulders. I think that’s what this group and this locker room wants. They want this challenge, they want this opportunity. They want to have it in their hands, and I think these are the games these guys definitely look forward to playing in.”
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES GOALKEEPER ANDREW TARBELL On his own performance:“I’m just happy to help the team. They got away from us in transition, and I was just happy to make a few stops to keep us in it.” On the feeling heading into next week’s final match:“We’re just ready for a good week of training, and just all preparation for next weekend. The locker room is a tight-knit group. We’ve been battling this whole season, and we’re just going to keep doing what we’re doing, keep battling, and be ready for next weekend.” SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES FORWARD CHRIS WONDOLOWSKI
On approaching the final match against Minnesota:“To be honest, to a man we’re a bit disappointed coming off with a tie. And then we saw the other results, and we’ll take it. It’s kind of a funny thing. We’ll come out next weekend and we just have to take care of our business. We win, we’re in. So we know that, and that’s how we’re going to look at it.”

#PANAMANIACOne of the most impactful players in Major League Soccer, Anibal Godoy controls the tempo for the Earthquakes on both sides of the ball. Possessing an aggressive defensive demeanor, a calm presence on the ball, and a wicked left-footed shot, Godoy has become the heartbeat of the Quakes and a player other teams need to prepare for.

LeadershipGodoy has led San Jose to a 21-18-19 record in his appearances since joining the team in August of 2015.
Earthquakes midfielder Jahmir Hyka only recently arrived in San Jose, but he’s already played a big role in the Quakes’ success this season. The Al-banian international has recorded three goals and four assists so far in his de-but MLS campaign and his creativity
on the pitch has also inspired some off the pitch. Against FC Dallas on April 14, Quakes fan Carina Ibarra and her son Alex brought a sign to the match with a picture of the Pokémon, Pikachu, which bore the caption, “Hykachu.” Hyka went on to score his first MLS goal in that match, a dramatic, 94th-minute equalizer. At the following Quakes home game, a 3-0 win against the Portland Timbers, Cari-na and Alex brought the sign again and Hyka scored once more. Thus, the legend of Hykachu was born.
Earthquakes defender Nick Lima, 22, became the Quakes second-ever Homegrown Player upon signing with the club in January. He quickly established himself not only as a contender for MLS Rookie of the Year, but a frontrunner.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING“Lima has made the jump to the pros look easier than most do. He has grabbed the starting right back spot with the Earthquakes and turned heads across the league as one of the most impressive rookies in the early part of the 2017 season. In his pro debut, Lima had the task of fac-ing off against Montreal Impact star Ignacio Piatti, widely regarded as the best left winger in MLS. Lima helped shut down Piatti, who failed to register a single shot on goal or successful cross in a 1-0 Earthquakes victory ... Lima’s im-pressive start has already started to generate buzz about his U.S. national team future.” - Ives Galarcep, Soccer by Ives
“To a man in this locker room, everyone believes in Nick. I have him on the shortlist for Rookie of the Year, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in January camp next year.” - Earthquakes captain Chris Wondolowski
“Nick is someone I had seen in both Academy and college and I always knew he had the ability to step up to the next level. His transition has been smooth and has added im-mediate quality to San Jose defense.” - Keith Costigan, FOX Sports
“San Jose Earthquakes defender Nick Lima, a four-year standout at the University of California, stepped onto the Quakes’ right flank and has left little worry about future de-cision-making over there for the near future. It doesn’t hurt when you’re also scoring clutch goals at the other end.” - Ben Couch, MLSSoccer.com
“San Jose jumped on the TAM train this year, but Nick Lima’s emergence is just as, if not more, important to the future of the club. To have a young, talented defender be-come a day-in, day-out starter is a huge win.” - Andrew Wiebe, MLS
“It’s not easy to step into MLS as a rookie defender. The league is loaded with attacking options, ranging from world-renowned veterans to up-and-coming stars. It’s a lot to ask of a young defender, a lot to grasp for a player still learning their place. Nick Lima wasn’t content to just step in. Rather, at times, the San Jose Earthquakes fullback showed he had the potential to dominate.” - Ryan Tolmich, Soccer By Ives
During his MLS debut in Week 1, Lima held Ignacio Piatti without a single shot or chance created in the Quakes’ 1-0
win, earning him a spot on the MLS Team of the Week

QUAKES CAUSING QUAKESIn March of 2015, in conjunction with Avaya Stadium’s opening, the San Jose Earthquakes and the U.S Geological Sur-vey announced that a seismograph had been installed on-site to provide better characterization of how ground motion varies from one location to another during earthquakes. The seismograph, which is used to detect small natural quakes, is sensitive enough to record ground movement from raucous crowd activity at Earthquakes home games.

MNUFC Looks to Play Spoiler at San Jose EarthquakesMinnesota United heads to San Jose to take on the Earthquakes in the final match of its inaugural 2017 MLS season. The Loons, already eliminated from playoff contention, will look to ruin the Quakes playoff hopes on Decision Day and close out the season with what would be their fourth victory on the road. San Jose has clawed its way up to the final playoff spot over the past few weeks, narrowly holding on with a draw at West-leading Vancouver Whitecaps FC last weekend. It can confirm a place in the top six with a win over Minnesota, but any other result would leave things in the hands of others. MNUFC will eye a return to scoring ways for Abu Danladi, who has made a strong case for Rookie of the Year of late.
Loons Drop Tough 3-0 Result at LA GalaxyMinnesota United suffered its second loss of the season to LA Galaxy this past Sunday, as it fell 3-0 at StubHub Center. MNUFC was knocking on the door early, but it was the hosts who scored first, with Romain Alessandrini netting the opener. A header by Jonathan dos Santos hit twice off the crossbar and was called a goal after video review confirmed it crossed the line to make it 2-0. A majority of the Loons chances seemed to flow through Ethan Finlay, but the Duluth native was unable to find the back of the net, instead hitting shots straight at the opposition goalkeeper. LA finished off the night with a fast counter in stoppage time, as Alessandrini scored his second to give his side its third home win of the campaign.

• MNUFC was held scoreless in a 3-0 loss at LA Galaxy last weekend, the first time the side has been shutout since September 13, a 3-0 defeat at Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
• The Loons have yet to beat a Western Conference opponent on the road.
• Both Minnesota and San Jose are 2-2-1 in their past five matches.
• Three MLS Rookie of the Year candidates could play in Sunday’s match. MNUFC’s Abu Danladi and San Jose’s Jackson Yueill and Nick Lima are all on the 2017 ballot.
• Danladi currently leads all rookies in scoring with eight goals, four of which were match-winners.
• Danladi has earned a point in four of the past six matches (3G/1A).
• San Jose currently occupies the only unsecured playoff spot in the West. Two teams, FC Dallas and Real Salt Lake, could still catch the Earthquakes and slide into the postseason. San Jose needs to win to ensure its placement. If the Earthquakes lose or draw against Minnesota, a win by either FC Dallas or RSL would eliminate them.
• Ethan Finlay made his 160th MLS regular-season appearance last week against LA.
• Sam Cronin had five goals and 12 assists in his five seasons playing for San Jose.
• Marc Burch (1A), Finlay (1G), Jermaine Taylor (1A) and Johan Venegas (1G) have career points against the Earthquakes.
• Bobby Shuttleworth has a career 3-2-0 record against San Jose, with 17 saves, one clean sheet and a 1.00 GAA. It is his second-lowest GAA against an MLS team, behind Colorado Rapids at 0.87.
• Shuttleworth surpassed 14,000 regular-season MLS minutes last match (he has played 14,056 minutes over his career in the league to date).
• Collen Warner has the opportunity to make his 190th career regular-season appearance against San Jose on Sunday.
• Collin Martin has started in six consecutive matches.
• If Jerome Thiesson plays on Sunday, he will have appeared in all but one MNUFC match across competitions this season.
• Seven players who started last match for Minnesota started the previous meeting with San Jose.
• Ibson has won 53 dribbles since the beginning of September, the second-most in MLS.
• Christian Ramirez could make his 125th appearance for Minnesota United on Sunday. He has scored 14 goals this season and has 67 goals in all competitions since joining the club in 2014.

Academy Teams Head to Texas for Central Conference ShowcaseThe MNUFC Development Academy U13 and U14 teams are gearing up for a trip to Frisco, Texas, this weekend to compete in the Central Conference Boys’ Regional Showcase. The tournament, which runs from Friday, October 20 to Sunday, October 22, represents the teams’ first chance to compete at a national level against competition including other MLS Academy teams from Houston, Orlando City and Sporting Kansas City.
The tournament is organized to maximize opportunities for players to see different kinds of competition, so the U13 and U14 teams will play a pair of matches with 25-minute halves on Friday and Saturday, respectively, as a warm up for a full 80-minute match the next day.
This Development Academy Showcase is managed and scouted by US Soccer with an eye toward finding players for the Youth National Teams Program.
“This event provides our players with an opportunity to gain valuable game experience against teams from outside of our region of the country,” said Tim Carter, MNUFC Academy Director. “It is essential that the players experience different styles and concepts of play in order to facilitate their personal growth and development. This is a critical element found in a high-performance environment and one that our players need to consistently experience to improve.”
The MNUFC Development Academy’s fall schedule runs through Saturday, November 18 and picks up again in late March.
Despite Stumble at LA, Loons Look to Continue Impressive FormEven with a 3-0 loss at LA Galaxy on Saturday, MNUFC has enjoyed one of its best runs of form over the past couple months. Starting with its first road win in MLS on August 26 at Chicago Fire, the Loons have gone 4-3-2 over their past nine games. They will try to win five of 10 matches for the first time on Sunday in San Jose.
Ramirez Set to Make 125th MNUFC AppearanceLongtime Minnesota United forward Christian Ramirez is set to make his 125th appearance for the club in all competitions in Sunday’s season finale against San Jose Earthquakes. Ramirez has been with the team since 2014, playing for the club in the second division North American Soccer League.
Known to fans as “Superman,” Ramirez’s play has been nothing short of heroic since joining the club. He was forced into the starting role just weeks ahead of the 2014 campaign, when fellow forward Pablo Campos suffered a preseason injury. The young forward wasted no time silencing doubters, scoring in spectacular fashion just 15 minutes into his debut. Ramirez tied the NASL record with 20 goals that season and would go on to make 92 consecutive appearances in all competitions.
During his NASL tenure, Ramirez racked up three Best XI awards and two Golden Boots, a Young Player of the Year award and the 2014 Goal of the Year. He also became the first player in club history to score 50 career goals.
He has continued to find success in MLS, with 14 goals in 29 appearances during the club’s inaugural season in the league. He’s received recognition in league awards as well, with two Team of the Week honors and nominations for MLS MVP and Newcomer of the Year.
Ramirez’s appearances are split between competitions with 90 in the NASL, 29 in MLS and five in the U.S. Open Cup. He has scored 67 goals across his career, netting 51 in NASL and two in the Open Cup in conjunction with his 14 in MLS.
Young Martin Becoming Feature in Loons’ LineupMidfielder Collin Martin, 22, has featured in the MNUFC starting lineup for six of the past six games in place of the injured Sam Cronin. His recent run of form was highlighted by an appearance in the MLS Team of the Week during Week 31.
Finlay Makes Milestone 160th MLS AppearanceLast week in Los Angeles, MNUFC midfielder Ethan Finlay made his 160th regular-season appearance in MLS, as the Loons fell on the road 3-0 to LA Galaxy. Finlay has spent six seasons in the league, first joining Columbus Crew SC in 2012 after he was selected 10th overall in that year’s SuperDraft.
Finlay made 150 appearances for Crew SC before joining Minnesota via a trade back in August. He has since made 10 appearances for the Loons. The midfielder has 33 goals and 33 assists in his regular-season career, with four goals and four assists in an MNUFC kit.
Shuttleworth Set to Pass Career HighsMinnesota United goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth has proven to be one of the most valuable pickups of the inaugural season, with incredible influence on the team’s success. His impressive year between the sticks has the 30-year-old goalkeeper set to beat several of his career-high stats.
Shuttleworth has already tied his career high of 32 regular-season appearances and is expected to start on Sunday. He set a new career high for saves in a season with 112, the second-highest in the league. He has also denied two penalty attempts this campaign, the third time he has accomplished that feat in his career.

Minnesota United FC plays in North America’s top professional soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS). The league features 22 teams from across the United States and Canada.
After a successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 1994, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) founded MLS to bring a top-level soccer league back to the country for the first time since 1984, when the original NASL folded. The league was set to begin play in 1996 with 10 teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew (SC), D.C. United, Dallas Burn (FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Sporting Kansas City), Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars (New York Red Bulls), San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) and Tampa Bay Mutiny.
The league’s first match was played on April 6, 1996 as the San Jose Clash played D.C. United in front of 31,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The league drew large crowds in its opening season, pulling star power from around North America and building on the excitement of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
As MLS has continued to grow, clubs have begun moving out of shared American football venues and into soccer-specific stadium, led by Columbus Crew (SC), who moved into the soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium in 1999. Currently, 14 teams play in soccer-specific venues.
The league is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 matches during the season. Teams play all conference opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and each team in the other conference once, with an even balance of home and away matches. The remainder of the schedule is filled with matches against conference opponents. The top six teams in each conference at the end of the year qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs.
The postseason begins with the third through sixth seeds in each conference playing in a knockout round. The winners advance to the conference semifinals to play the first and second seeds in the conference. In this round, the format switches to a two-match aggregate series, with the team scoring the most goals over the series moving on. The same format is used for the conference finals. The winner of the conference final moves on to face the other conference champion in the MLS Cup Final. The final is a single match, hosted by the team with the best record in the regular season, with the winner being declared MLS Cup Champion.

Heath was appointed head coach in Nov. 2016. After playing over 18 years in Europe, Heath spent the next 11 years coaching in England for clubs such as Burnley, Sheffield United and Coventry City before coming to the United States in 2008. The Englishman was named head coach of the USL expansion side Austin Aztex. The team spent two years in Austin before relocating to Orlando in 2010, to become Orlando City. In just four years under Heath, Orlando City won two USL Pro championships and three Commissioner’s Cups. The club joined MLS in 2015, and Heath’s influence helped build the team for a very successful inaugural season, narrowly missing out on the playoffs.
