Open House and Private Treaty Kickoff Sale. We hopethis finds you all doing well and looking forward to arewarding and prosperous year in 2014. A big thanks toall our past customers, we really do appreciate yourtrust and interest in our program.

One thing about the farming and ranching business isthat every year is different. The corn prices havedropped considerablely from where they were a yearago and the cattle prices keep rising. The steer mates tothe bulls we are offering brought just over $1,500through the sale barn. This is a good time to be in thebeef business and should be for years to come.

This year we will be offering 33 yearling bulls,purebreds and balancers, red and black (18 homozy-gous black). The bulls have performed real well for usthis year, summered on the dry pastures with no creepand then on a high roughage diet since weaning. Thebulls will all be semen tested by Dr. Wulf of the RedCloud Animal Health and will carry a first breedingseason guarantee.

Breeding season is defined as the "90-day periodfollowing the first turnout of the bulls."

BiddingProcedures for our Private Treaty Sale:

• When you have made your selections of bulls (priorto 1:00 p.m.) place your buyer’s number on the cardlocated on the pen for that lot or lots.

• At 1:00 p.m., the bulls with more than one buyer’snumber will be decided by private auction. The bullswith the most buyer numbers will be bid off first. Thebidders will be announced.

• A deck of cards will be used to determine the orderof bidding. Each bidder will select a card. The one withthe highest card will own the bull IF the other bidders donot raise the bid on the base price. The person with thenext highest card has the option to raise the price by$50.00 if they desire. Every card holder will have achance to raise the bid. This will continue until only onebuyer remains, giving every buyer the same equal op-portunity to buy any bull we have to offer.

• The unsuccessful bidders will have a few minutesto put their number on any other available bull. Werecommend that you have your second choice in mind.

• The bid-offs will continue until all bulls havingmultiple bidders have been sold.

• If only one buyer number is on a bull - that personwill own that bull at the base price listed.

• Bulls not sold on March 3rd will be available for saleprivate treaty after that date.

The IGENITY® Profile: The IGENITY® providesthe beef industry with the most comprehensivegenetic profile of multiple traits of economic im-portance. The insights gained from an IGENITY®profile help producers make more confident se-lection, management and marketing decisions.The IGENITY® profile includes multiple-markeranalyses for traits such as: Tenderness, Marbling,Quality grade, Yield grade, Hot carcass weight,Fat thickness, Ribeye area, Heifer pregnancy rate,Stayability, Calving ease and Docility.

Profile Score Advantages: To assist cattle pro-ducers in understanding the value of DNA tech-nology, IGENITY® has developed a scoring sys-tem for each trait using a scale of 1 to 10. Highervalues are not necessarily better-they simply in-dicate that the animal has the potential for moreof that trait.

Marbling Score: Higher scores from IGENITY®for marbling equal greater genetic potential formarbling. In a group of animals with a score fromIGENITY® of 10 for marbling, the average mar-bling score can be expected to be 161 points greaterthan animals with a score of 1. The USDA beefgrading system for marbling uses a 100 to 999point scale. Marbling points reflect how muchintramuscular fat is present in each carcass andthus the potential to grade USDA Choice.

Tenderness: The analysis in the IGENITY® pro-file for tenderness represents an animal's geneticpotential for tenderness as measured by Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF), with 10 being themost tender and 1 being the least tender. Lowershear force means more tender beef. In a group ofanimals with a score from IGENITY® of 10 fortenderness, 2.3 pounds less shear force is re-quired than an animal with a score fromIGENITY® of 1.

Yield Grade: Higher scores from IGENITY® foryield grade equal a genetic potential for a higherUSDA yield grade. Since higher yield gradevalues are a result of more fat and/or lessmuscle, animals with higher scores for yieldgrade are expected to be fatter and/or lightermuscled. A group of animals with a score fromIGENITY® of 10 for yield grade can be expectedto receive a yield grade that is 1.35 units of agrade higher (less favorable) than animals thatreceive a score of 1 from IGENITY®.

NR (No Result): Some samples may look nor-mal when we submitted them, but still are un-able to produce acceptable results. This oftenoccurs due to contaminants that are undetect-able to the naked eye: i.e. dirt, mold or otherforeign matter. In many instances, a new samplehas been submitted and results will be an-nounced on sale day.

How to use the IGENITY® Profile: IGENITY®scores are easy to incorporate into your selec-tion criteria. They represent an additional toolwhen combined with EPDs, ultrasound and vi-sual appraisal. As the case with any selectionmethod, single trait selection should be avoided.Select those animals that best combine the traitsyou desire to emphasize in your herd. Calving Ease Direct (CE): An EPD that is ex-pressed as a ratio, with a higher ratio represent-ing better (easier) calving ease. This value repre-sents the direct influence a sire has on calvingease. Only first-calf heifer data is included.

Birth Weight (BW): predicts the difference, inpounds, for birth weight.

Weaning Weight (WW): predicts the difference,in pounds for weaning weight (adjusted to age ofdam and a standard 205 days of age). This is anindicator of growth from birth to weaning.

Yearling Weight (YW): predicts the expected dif-ference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjustedto standard 365 days of age). This is an indicatorof growth from birth to yearling.

Milk (MK): The genetic ability of a sire's daugh-ters to produce milk expressed in pounds of wean-ing weight.

Total Maternal (TM): a value that combinesgrowth and milk information and a prediction ofthe weaning weight performance of calves from asire's daughters. This value does not have anaccompanying accuracy value.

Gestation Length (GL): this EPD is expressed indays and measures the days under or over nor-mal gestation length a sire's daughters can beexpected to calve.

Days to Finish (DtF): expressed in days to reacha constant fat endpoint, which is commonly usedin the feedlot to determine when an animal isfinished with the appropriate amount of fatcover. When evaluating two potential sires withcomparable EPDs for other traits, the sire withthe lesser value of DtF will produce progeny thatwill finish sooner with potentially lower feedcosts.

was recently recognized by the American Gelbvieh As-sociation (AGA) as the owner of 26 Gelbvieh/Balancercow(s) exhibiting the consistent maternal efficiency typi-cal of "The Continental Breed of Choice." The AGA hasdesignated these outstanding beef females as Dam ofMerit and Dam of Distinction.

Maternal productivity plays a major role in profitablebeef production, as nearly 60 percent of the cost ofproducing a pound of beef can be attributed to the cowherd. Considerable economic research has demonstratedthat fertility and calving ease followed by milk, growthand carcass cutability have the biggest influence on profitin a retained ownership (conception to carcass) system.

Commercial cattlemen agree that Gelbvieh geneticshave strong maternal attributes with the added benefitsof fast growth and carcass cutability. Given the increasedemphasis on efficient beef production, the Gelbviehbreed is in an excellent position to increase its influenceon the beef industry.

The title "Dam of Merit" recognizes cows that meetstrict selection criteria including early puberty and con-ception, regular calving intervals, and above-averageweaning weights on at least three calves. Of the 39,516active cows in the Gelbvieh breed, only 3.6 percentqualify for Dam of Merit. The "Dam of Distinction" honorrecognizes cows that meet the same high standards forsuperior, long-term productivity with at least eight calves.Just 0.8 percent of all active Gelbvieh/Balancer cowsqualify for this elite group.

New Generation AGA EPDsThe American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) January

2014 EPDs are based on a new collaborative nationalcattle evaluation (NCE) with the American SimmentalAssociation (ASA). Below is a summary of some of theenhancements to the AGA new generation EPDs, followedby trait averages and percentile charts.

Gelbvieh and Balancer Share a CommonBase with Simmental and Red Angus

Gelbvieh and Balancer EPDs are now on the same basewith Simmental and Red Angus, which means that EPDsfor each trait (except stayability) are directly comparableto ASA and Red Angus Association of America (RAAA)EPDs. This was a huge, progressive decision by the AGABoard of Directors, made to simplify bull selection forcommercial producers.

Calving Ease and Calving Ease DaughtersEPDs Converted to Industry Standard

TerminologyFor over 25 years, the AGA calving ease (CE) and

calving ease daughter (CED) EPDs were reported inthe form of a ratio. They are now reflected aspercentages. Higher CE values equal moreunassisted births from sires when mated to first-calfheifers. Higher CED EPDs indicate less calvingdifficulty from a sire’s own first-calf daughters.

Multi-Breed EPDs Provide More CompleteBalancer EPDs

The true multi-breed EPD NCE conducted by theASA enables the inclusion of more progeny data fromRed Angus and Angus sires, especially for the carcasstraits.

Growth Traits are More ReliableThe new EPDs for weaning weight (WW), yearling

weight (YW) and carcass weight (CW) are more reliablebecause the new statistical process accepts a wider agewindow for weaning weight. This is especially beneficialfor breeders that wean calves early due to drought.Historically, weights from early-weaned calves werenot included in the NCE.

Carcass Traits are StandardizedIn recent years, Gelbvieh and Balancer carcass traits

were adjusted to a fat end-point instead of an age endpointlike the rest of the industry. AGA’s transition to age-adjusted carcass EPDs will eliminate the gaps in the U.S.Meat Animal Research Center’s carcass EPD breedcomparisons. This change also means that the days-to-finish (DtF) EPD is replaced by a fat (FT) EPD. A yieldgrade (YG) EPD is also new. For both FT and YG, lowerEPDs are typically more favorable.
