General Information

About Band

The Manvel Warrior Band continues its tradition on a new campus this year. Students begin their experience in the band program in like-instrument classes the first year in order to maximize individualized instruction. After the first year, students audition for placement in either the Symphonic Band or Concert Band in order to continue their musical growth. Band is a performance-based class; therefore, all performances/concerts are an integral part of our curriculum. Members of the Manvel Warrior Band are held to the highest standards academically and musically; they should be model citizens of Manvel Junior High.

Practicing and Commitment

Playing a musical instrument requires outside practice time. Students who do not practice on a regular basis will not reach their full potential. By participating in band you are making a commitment to the other members of your class, to your teachers, to your parents, and to yourself. Every member of the band is important. It takes an incredible amount of individual and group effort to create a successful performance and program.

Grading Policy

Daily Grade - 60% • Class participation: Students bring all required supplies* to class everyday, must

be participating fully in the lesson Major Grades - 40%

• Sectional Attendance (Symphonic/Concert) • These may include playing tests, recorded assignments, and practice logs • Concerts and Performances*

Sectionals

What are sectionals? Sectionals are a time for like-instruments to rehearse together for the good of the band. During sectionals, students will receive a grade for attendance, have opportunities to pass off objectives, and participate in chair tests.

Band is a co-curricular subject; sectionals are a part of the curriculum and are required for all students in both symphonic and concert band.

Sectional times will be set in advance for each band and may change throughout the year depending on school activities. We will try to avoid conflicts with other before and after school activities. Some conflicts may be unavoidable, and we will address these on an individual basis.

Private Lessons What is a private lesson? A private lesson is an opportunity for your student to work one-on-one with a highly-qualified and experienced performer and teacher who specializes in their particular instrument.

Who teaches private lessons? The private lesson staff at Manvel JH is made up of university-level performers or higher. Our teachers range from degreed teachers and performers to undergraduate performance and education majors (generally from Rice University and the University of Houston). All lesson staff has been interviewed to ensure appropriate teaching techniques and concepts. All Alvin ISD private lesson teachers have applied with and been approved by Alvin ISD. They have all been subjected to fingerprinting and an FBI criminal background check.

Who needs private lessons? We strongly recommend that all students wanting to improve on their instrument take private lessons. Students playing school-owned instruments are highly encouraged to participate in lessons. Because of difficulty of those instruments, lessons are a requirement for students playing oboe and bassoon. Private lessons are not tutorials. If you can afford private lessons you should take them. Nothing will improve your playing faster than private lessons.

Where and when are the lessons taught? All of our lessons are taught at Manvel JH and HS. Alvin ISD allows us to have lessons taught during the school day, so a lot of our students have their lesson during band class. We also have lesson teachers who teach before or after school. Your lesson time would be determined by your personal schedule and that of the lesson teacher.

How often are the lessons, and how much do they cost? Private lessons are usually 30 minutes long, once a week. Because the private lesson teachers are not employees of Alvin ISD, the lesson cost may vary between teachers and instruments. Generally, the cost is around $20 per 30 minute lesson.

If I start private lessons, can I stop if necessary, or do I have to do it for the entire year? Private lessons are not required, only recommended. We ask that all private lesson students remain in lessons for the duration of the school year, but we understand that financial difficulties occur. If your financial situation doesn’t allow you to continue with lessons, we ask that you let your lesson teacher and your band director know at least two weeks before stopping lessons. That way we can try to help the lesson teacher fill the hole in their schedule. For many of our lesson teachers, private lessons make up a large part of their income. Stopping lessons without notice makes it very difficult for us to keep qualified teachers.

What if we have an emergency and can’t make it to a lesson? It is your responsibility to get contact information from your lesson teacher during your first lesson. Contact the lesson teacher as soon as you know you won’t be able to attend a lesson. If you do not contact them at least 24 hours before missing a lesson, the absence is unexcused and you will need to pay for the lesson. In case of emergency cancellations, contact the lesson teacher immediately.

How do we pay for lessons? Lessons may be paid for in cash or with a check. All checks must be made out to the individual lesson teacher. To facilitate any possible unexcused absences, we recommend paying for lessons one month at a time if you are able. Alvin ISD asks that you pay for the first four lessons upon starting private lessons. After that, a payment schedule can be worked out with your lesson teacher.

Handbook Signature Page Handbook

I have read and understand the contents of this handbook regarding grade requirements, time commitment, and student expectations. I understand that all scheduled rehearsals and performances are required and graded. I understand that missing a scheduled rehearsal or performance may affect my grade, my chair, or my band placement.

School-Owned Instruments This section is ONLY for students playing oboe, bassoon, bass clarinet, tenor sax, bari sax, horn, euphonium, tuba, or percussion.

I play the oboe, bassoon, horn, euphonium, or tuba. I understand that I am responsible for the AISD $60 rental fee. This fee helps offset the cost of cleaning and general maintenance. I understand that it does not cover dents, scratches, or any other damage caused by neglect or mishandling. I agree to pay for any repairs outside of what would be considered “normal wear and tear.” I play the bass clarinet, tenor sax, bari sax, percussion or step-up trombone. I understand that I am not responsible for the AISD $60 rental fee. Because I am using a school-district instrument, if I am found to have caused damage to an instrument outside of “normal wear and tear,” I agree to pay for the cost of repairs.

Charms Office Update

I logged into Charms and updated my contact information I attempted to log into Charms, but my ID number would not work. Please help me! I would like to log in to Charms but I do not have internet access at this time. Please use the phone numbers listed on the Travel Consent and Emergency Medical Information form for contacts until I am able to update my Charms account. I understand that I will miss some weekly emails, and that my student will be responsible for keeping me informed about upcoming band events. Yes, please add me to the “band volunteer” group on charms for e-mails when volunteers are needed.
