Let’s talk about our results

• Which mixtures were separated by the screen?

Gravel• Which mixtures were separated by

the filter?Powder

• How are the screen and filter similar?• The both separate mixtures.

• A mixture is two or more materials stirred together.

• A property is a characteristic of an object, something you can observe such as size, color, shape, or texture.

• A solution is a special mixture formed when a material dissolves in water.

• Dissolving is the process in which one material disperses uniformly into another material, so that the first material seems to disappear.

LOL cont.

• Water and solid material make a mixture.

• Some mixtures can be separated with filters.

Vocabulary: Evaporation causes liquids to dry up- the liquid turns to a gas and

disperses into the air, leaving any dissolved solid material behind. A crystal is the solid form of a material that can be identified by its

properties, such as shape, color, and pattern.

Content: How can a solution be separated? When a solution evaporates, it

leaves the dissolved solid behind How can the material left behind by evaporation be identified? If the

evaporation material forms a crystal, it can be identified by its properties, such as shape and pattern.

Title: Salt SaturationInvestigation 2.1

Page 12: Mixtures and Solutions Investigation 1. Let’s talk about our results Which mixtures were separated by the screen? Gravel Which mixtures were separated.

Purpose: To gain experience with the concept of saturation.

Q? – How much salt can you dissolve in 50 ml of water?

LOL: Word Bank: A solution is made of two parts, the solvent

and the solute.

Solvent is the liquidSolute- is the solid that dissolves in the

solvent

When a solute dissolves in a solvent until no more will dissolve, the result is a saturated solution

LOL:Content:

1. Is there a limit to the amount of salt that will dissolve in water?

Salt will dissolve until it reaches saturation. No more salt will dissolve once saturation is reached.

2. How can you determine the amount of salt present in a saturated volume of water?

The amount of salt in a saturated solution can be determined by weighing the saturated solution and subtracting the mass of the water.

Title: Citric-Acid SaturationInvestigation 2.2

Page 16: Mixtures and Solutions Investigation 1. Let’s talk about our results Which mixtures were separated by the screen? Gravel Which mixtures were separated.

Purpose: To gain experience with the concept of saturation using citric acid

Q? – How much citric acid is needed to saturate 50 ml of water?

Word Bank:

Solubility is the property that substances have of dissolving in solvents, such as the solubility of salt in water.

• Content:

Which is more soluble in water, salt or citric acid?Citric acid is about four times more soluble in water

than salt is.
