Short summary: (aims and goals of the meeting, methods, contents, results) The objective of this networking meeting was to present first results of the MixBioPells project
and to initiate a vivid information exchange between the stakeholders of the pelletizing plant in
Bad Radkersburg (association “Hay and Pellets”.
First, BE2020+ presented the MixBioPells project and the results of the cost analysis and selected
Best Practice examples of the project partner countries. The members of the association could benefit
from the provided information, especially the examples of other countries were met with interest.
In the afternoon, the participants of the networking meeting visited the pelletizing plant of the
association “Hay and pellets”. Furthermore, the participants discussed the business concept of the
association and possible future developments.
Minutes
Raw material and pelletizing plant
The six members of the association “Hay and pellets” operate an own pelletizing plant and produce
MixBioPells IEE/09/758
mixed corncob/hay pellets. The used hay from abandoned/protected meadows is not suitable for
animal feeding due to reduced feed quality caused by the late mowing point in time. The raw material
suppliers are 42 farmers of the region with long-term supply contracts.
For pelletizing, they use a 25-years old ring die technology, which was used for animal feed
production in the past. At present, the production capacity is about 800 kg/h.
Combustion systems
Currently a 50 kW pellets burner of the company Verner a.s., Cervený Kostelec-type: Verner A501G-
is used. Mixed pellets (20 % hay and 80 % corncobs) are used as fuel. So far, only slight slagging was
observed.
Future developments
Following aspects for the improvement of the business concept have been discussed:
• Possible subsidies (e.g. LEADER)
• Possible other raw materials (grape marc?)
• Optimization of the pellets (pelletizing vs. combustion relevant properties)
• Storage and drying of the corn cobs
• Development of a marketing concept

Possible end users are the industry, farms, industrial bread ovens (restaurants and supermarkets).
The potential pelletizing company has studied and tested different processes in order to obtain physical stabile briquettes. The final formula has been patented.
Almond shells from the food industry
Possible end users are private pellet stove/boiler owners as well as small district heating systems (e.g. hospitals).
