Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MHISB) is a new group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI). The company was established in October 2015 with one billion yen in capital and approximately 500 employees to play a significant role in supporting growing demands in global energy transportation. MHISB specializes in the construction of gas carriers and offers comprehensive services that include design, construction, delivery, and after-sales services of gas carriers. Hull blocks are provided by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Hull Production Co., Ltd., which was also established at the same time. The partnership between the two companies enables a streamlined production process based on continuous construction. Operational process reform and improved cost effectiveness are further pursued under the company’s compact, yet dynamic business structure, with the goal of actively supporting the ongoing success of the Nagasaki commercial ship business. | 1. Profile MHISB’s dock (990 m long x 100 m wide) at the Nagasaki Shipyard’s Koyagi Plant is equipped with one 1,200-ton and two 600-ton Goliath cranes for handling large blocks, thus enabling efficient shipbuilding (Figure 1). Labor efficiency is also improved by carrying out more on-ground outfitting prior to block loading and eliminating the need for more labor-intensive in-vessel work as much as possible. Further business expansion is being pursued by shortening the outfitting period, which often causes bottlenecks.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MHISB) is a new group company of

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI).
