MITOSIS
Dec 27, 2015
What is Mitosis?
A period of nuclear cell division resulting in 2 daughter cells, each cell containing a COMPLETE set of chromosomes.
Why does Mitosis occur? To replace the dying cells with
new cells that are “exact” copies of the old cells.
Where does Mitosis occur?
Mitosis occurs in all somatic (NON-SEX) cells.
What type of cell division takes place in SEX cells?
MEIOSIS: Cell division resulting in 4 gamete cells, each containing HALF of the parental cell’s genetic material.
5 PHASES OF CELL CYCLE & MITOSIS
ACRONYM: IPMAT
I = INTERPHASE (NOT part of mitosis)
P = PROPHASE: 1st and longest phase of mitosis.
M = METAPHASE: 2nd phase.
A = ANAPHASE: 3rd phase.
T = TELOPHASE: 4th phase.
I = INTERPHASE
Visible Nucleolus
Nucleus (unable to see
chromosomes …BUT they are currently REPLICATING!)
P = PROPHASE
Chromosomes condense or become visible
Nuclear envelope & nucleolus disappear
Spindle fibers develop from centrioles
A = ANAPHASE
Chromosomes (sister chromatids) are split and pulled to opposite ends of the cell by ______ ______attached to a __________.
spindlefibers
centriole
