MSU begins play Friday at 5 p.m. against the winner of Thursday’s contest between fourth-seeded Southern Illinois and No. 5 Illinois State. The championship match takes place Saturday at 4 p.m. The other half of the bracket includes No. 2 Wichita State, No. 3 UNI and No. 6 Loyola. A native of El Cajon, Calif., Stokes has guided Missouri State to an overall record of 392-164 (.705) and 232-74 (.758) mark in the Missouri Valley Conference since 2000. The Bears have won MVC regular season championships in 2003 and 2016 under Stokes, making NCAA Tournament appearances in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2015. Missouri State played one of the nation’s toughest non-conference schedules in 2016, with seven matches against NCAA Tournament teams from 2015 before adding six more during the MVC season. The Bears currently own two victories against teams ranked in the AVCA’s top 15 - No. 14 Illinois on Aug. 27 and 12th-ranked Ohio State on Sept. 9 - and have played four such teams this season. Missouri State has seven total victories against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last year. Two of MSU’s seven losses have come against teams ranked 15th or higher at the time, and four more are against 2015 NCAA clubs.

The Bears have picked up 18 MVC weekly awards so far this season. Lily Johnson was honored as the league’s Player of the Week and Scholar-Athlete of the Week after the season’s opening weekend. She averaged 3.92 kills, 3.00 digs, 0.31 aces and 0.31 blocks as the Bears defeated Arkansas and No. 14 Illinois. Aubrey Cheffey was the Freshman of the Week on Sept. 6 after hitting .410 in three matches in Hawai’i, averaging 2.11 kills and 1.00 blocks per set with a .487 kill percentage against 15th-ranked Hawai’i, No. 8 UCLA and Pacific. Lynsey Wright was the Player of the Week on Sept. 12 after averaging of 4.08 kills, 4.65 points, 0.62 blocks, 0.23 aces and 0.62 digs per set as the MVP of the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational. Wright had 20 kills and six blocks in MSU’s win against No. 12 Ohio State. Daniele Messa picked up top freshman honors the same week, with averages of 10.73 assists while helping the Bears to a .255 hitting percentage. She posted double-doubles against 12th-ranked Ohio State and IUPUI. Johnson won MVC Player of the Week and Scholar-Athlete of the Week for a second time on Oct. 3 after posting three consecutive matches with at least 25 kills, including a career-high 33 on .368 hitting at Drake. She added MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week a day later. Messa grabbed her second freshman honor on Oct. 10 after averaging 11.17 as-sists, 0.83 blocks, 2.67 digs and 0.67 kills per set while leading the Bears to a .315 team hitting efficiency in sweeps of Bradley and Loyola. Johnson averaged 5.86 kills, 6.57 points and 3.29 digs per set in wins against Drake and UNI to collect her third Player of the Week and Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards of the season on Oct. 31. Messa grabbed her fourth straight fresh-man honor the same week after averages of 13.43 assist and 4.00 digs while guiding the Bears to a .279 attack efficiency. It was Johnson and Messa again on Nov. 7, as Johnson hit .333 with averages of 6.17 kills and 4.00 digs per set for her fourth win of the year. Messa made it five weeks in a row after setting MSU to a .323 team hitting percent-age and averaging 13.67 kills and 2.83 digs per set. Butters added an MVC Scholar-Athlete honor on Nov. 8 after averaging 6.67 digs per set and becoming the first MSU sophomore to surpass 1,000 career digs. Brianne Dixon and Lily Johnson earned spots on the CoSIDA Academic All-District VI First Team, and were joined by Emily Butters as MSU’s representatives on the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team. Both cell and molecular biology majors, Dixon and Johnson carry GPAs of 4.00 and 3.99, respectively, while Butters owns a 3.92 GPA in exercise and movement science.

The number six has been a milestone number the last 18-plus seasons in terms of winning streaks, as the Bears have strung together at least six consecutive wins a total of 22 times since the beginning of the 1999 season. MSU had a seven-match winning streak from Sept. 3-16 this season, and began a 16-match streak on Sept. 30.

Missouri State has been dominant at home since 2000, compiling a record of 187-45 for an .806 winning percentage at Hammons Student Center. The Bears went 11-2 in 2016 and have won at least 64 percent of their home matches in 17 consecutive seasons.
Missouri State boasts two players from Springfield on its 2016 roster (Brianne Dixon and Gerri Idos from Kickapoo High) and a total of eight players from southwest Missouri, in-cluding Lauren Boone (Branson), MacKenzie Irwin (Joplin), Laynie Dake (Mount Vernon), Ashley Ophoven and Paige Perry (Ozark), and Aubrey Cheffey (Nixa). In all, 10 of MSU’s 18 players hail from the Show-Me State.
