Larrita Gibson, Chicago, IL“I chose Missouri Southern because I wanted a school where the professors worked up close and in-person with you. I also chose Missouri Southern because of the communication department. I wanted to attend a college that I felt would help me prepare for jobs in the future with my degree in public relations.”

Evan Zupan, Rogers, AR“Southern is a great school, where the community is big enough for you to meet new people, but small enough to be close. Where invested professors teach to you, not at you. Where you’re far enough to get away, but not too far from home. Southern is a great first step for anyone; you couldn’t ask for a better value for a school of this quality.”

Jake Messer, Carl Junction, MO“I chose to go to MSSU because I could obtain an exceptional education while not breaking the bank. MSSU’s faculty and facilities are parallel to any other university and will prepare me for my future in graduate school, studying family and marriage counseling. I’m proud, and will be proud, to call myself a Lion throughout my life and professional career.”

Transfer Scholarships

Scholarships: These are gifts of money paid to you to support your college education awarded on the basis of academic or other achievements and financial need. The best part about scholarships is this is money awarded to you that you don’t have to pay back. Our scholarships range from $50 to $11,590. You can apply for all of our scholarships at:www.mssu.edu/financial-aid/scholarships/scholarships

Grants: These are gifts of money paid to you to support your college education awarded on the basis of financial need. The most common grant MSSU students receive is the Federal Pell Grant. Grants can range from $602 to $5,730 per academic year. Like scholarships, grants are money awarded to you that you don’t have to pay back. To qualify for grants, please fill out a FAFSA by April 1st.

Loans: This is money paid to you to support your college education on the condition that they will be paid back over time with interest. Student loans are very accessible and available to students. You are not required to pay them back until you leave college (this could include taking a break or graduation).

Employment Programs: This is a job you work while attending college to help offset the cost of your education. These are available through MSSU Student Employment funds as well as the Federal Work Study Program which is based on financial need. Pay is minimum wage

and you can work up to 20 hours a week. See if you qualify by setting up an appointment with the Student Employment Coordinator in the Financial Aid office. You can also find a great job in the local Four State community through Hire A Lion, MSSU’s job network.

Other Aid Opportunities: These are aid opportunities that can range from grants, loans, scholarships and awards. Students can utilize multiple resources to help pay for their education, such as Veterans Administration Benefits where our veterans can receive aid to earn an education. Or, the Bureau of Indian Affairs can be of assistance to those who qualify. Even companies like Coca-Cola want to pay you to go to school! There are too many to list. Find more great aid opportunities at:www.mssu.edu/financial-aid/scholarships/outside-scholarships.php

What is FAFSA? Great question! FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the first step to getting financial assistance for your education at MSSU. It’s very important to fill out the FAFSA prior to our priority deadlines if you want to receive federal, state or university aid.

The New Cadaver LabRecently, MSSU was honored to become one of the few undergraduate universities to house a cadaver lab. The Biology & Environmental Health department at MSSU receives donated cadavers for use by our faculty and students through an agreement with the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. This opportunity gives our students pursuing biomedical sciences a rare advantage, allowing them to study real human bodies.

The cadaver lab has been incorporated into all Anatomy and Physiology courses at MSSU and benefits Biology, Biochemistry, Kinesiology and Health Science majors.

The U.S. Department of Labor predicts that industrial engineers are expected to have employment growth of 20 percent higher than the previous decade, faster than the average of all other occupations. An IET student at Missouri Southern will learn to understand metallurgical and manufacturing processes, tools and design principles, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems, the use of probability and statistics, and engineering economics. They also develop skills in quality control, process improvement, facilities and logistics, and work measurement. As firms look for new ways to reduce costs and raise productivity, they increasingly turn to industrial engineers to develop processes that are more efficient and reduce costs, delays and waste.

MSSU offers a personal experience for our students. There’s no better example of that than in the School of Education, which consists of 3 different departments – psychology, kinesiology and teacher education. What do these areas have in common? They all involve the human element.

Faculty in our School of Education know “book smarts” only go so far. When it comes to working with and for people, we take you beyond the textbook – we take you face-to-face.

All of this means that when our students graduate, they are prepared for life beyond the classroom. The proof is in the Praxis II.

The Praxis II Subject Assessments measure knowledge of specific subjects that K-12 educators will teach, as well as general and subject-specific teaching skills and knowledge.

Jessica Beck,Accounting, transferred from Crowder College“I transferred to MSSU because it was the obvious financial choice. Then, once I got here, I realized how good the accounting program is, and I immediately knew I made the right decision. I know MSSU will help prepare me for my career as an accountant.”

Celeste Serrano,Sociology, transferred fromNorthwest Arkansas Community College“I decided to transfer to MSSU the minute I walked around campus. It’s open and inviting, and the faculty and staff are genuine and supportive - so worth the commute from Bentonville, Arkansas. As a sociology major and a non-traditional student, I feel comfortable and not lost in the shuffle.”

Alicia Collard,Early Childhood Education, transferred fromOzark Technical Community College“I have really enjoyed MSSU since I made the transfer from OTC and would recom-mend it to anyone coming from a community college or even a large university, sinceI have had experience with both. It was a smooth transition from OTC because of a lot of similarities with the online system, small class sizes, and friendly people. The staff and even students have been a huge help. This close atmosphere also makes it easy to make new friends because I was able to keep seeing the same faces in most of the classes pertaining to my major.”

Cody Carlin,Teacher Education, transferred fromNortheastern Oklahoma A&M College“MSSU gives you that hometown feel with one-on-one personal relationships withyour instructors and advisors. MSSU’s education program is well-known for producing some of the best teachers in the state, and I am happy to be a part of that program.I look forward to receiving my BA in Education from this school knowing it carries the reputation of quality.”
