Mission Trajectory (MT)
Vision Statement:
1. To enable military operations and special operations in an
increasingly complex environment
2. To increase the overall network performance and the mission
effectiveness for military and other State aircraft operators.
Definition: The Mission Trajectory is a 4D trajectory
addressing the specific requirements of Airspace Users
which cannot be accommodated by the Business
Trajectory
Objective: Integration of military operations into the
Network operations

MT Example
MT in SESAR (I)
Step 1
New airspace design principle, offering more modularity (VPA - Variable
Profile Area)
Sharing the initial trajectory information (iSMT) with the Network and the
other AUs - early flight intents and iOAT FPLs
Participation to the CDM process – airspace booking,
Real-time sharing of airspace activation/deactivation status among all
interested ATM stakeholders,
Automated support for ASM and Mission Planning processes
Synchronisation of ASM with ATFCM
Predefined Airspace Configuration scenarios at the local, sub-regional
and regional level
SESAR Mission Trajectory demonstration 5
MT in SESAR (II)
Step 2/3
New airspace design principle, offering more flexibility (DMA – Dynamic
Mobile Area) and reducing the impact on the Network
Integration of ARES into the MT description
Splits and merges of MTs for formation flights
MT integrated in the Trajectory Management process
Trajectory synchronisation for complex missions (COMAO) –
TTOs/CTOs
ASM is part of the NM function at all levels (local, sub-regional and
regional) and it is integrated in Advanced Management of Airspace –
implementation of Dynamic Airspace Configurations

OATTS Workshop 17 June 2014
MT Implementation - Potential Benefits
Transparency of military demand – overall network capacity
Integration at the network level - predictability and sharing
Common situational awareness for civil and military ATM actors,
facilitating Network operations
Enhanced military-military cooperation (e.g. interoperability of
automated systems, OATTS, CBOs)
Enhanced civil-military cooperation (e.g. OAT/GAT interface, exchange
and sharing of G/G and A/G data)
Enhanced flight efficiency and flight safety
Potential cost reduction opportunities (use of network level solutions):
Simplification of national military infrastructures supporting ATM
Shared ATM infrastructure
Avoiding adaptation of legacy systems
Enhanced data consistency for all ATM actors (civil and military)
Infrastructure sharing
