We have chosen to show our surpluses in our balance sheet rather than in our profit and loss account. If we do not get the required loan, then we will have a slow start and be self-funding. We will have to sell more units off plan. We welcome Sister Lorraine Holshausen in her place and wish her well in her new position. Till next time, John Webster From THIS To THIS! There’s never a dull moment in our Village! It’s either cottages being refurbished, new paths laid, lawns being mowed, trees being pruned…, but it’s all about keeping our Village new, modern and beautiful! On that note, our new Admin offices are now complete and look ever so smart. The build itself generated much speculation – good and bad by residents, but once the finishing touches were added, everyone agreed….. “it looks great!”

CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S REPORT By John Webster

NEW VILLAGE – Andrew Hudson cricketer, a bank consultant said to me we cannot lend you money because you are “cash poor and asset rich.” You show a surplus in your capital account each year but your Profit and loss account shows a loss each year. We have chosen to show our surpluses in our balance sheet rather than in our profit and loss account. In this way we keep our Cottage and Frail care levy income separate from our Capital or Life Right Sales income.

We are going ahead with the new village in Widenham. We will either have a slow start or a quick start. We need to borrow R11 million to have a quick start. We will pay interest at prime overdraft rates for this loan. So if there are 11 of our members wishing to lend us R1 million each, or one willing to lend us R11 million for 9 months from July 2017 until March 2018, then please phone me on 039 312 5801.

If we do not get the required loan, then we will have a slow start and be self-funding. We will have to sell more units off plan.

We said good-bye to Sister Terry from our Umdoni Care Centre last week and what an emotional sendoff she had from her nursing staff. We welcome Sister Lorraine Holshausen in her place and wish her well in her new position.

Till next time, John Webster

From THIS To THIS!

There’s never a dull moment in our Village! It’s either cottages being refurbished, new paths laid, lawns being mowed, trees being pruned…, but it’s all about keeping our Village new, modern and beautiful! On that note, our new Admin offices are now complete and look ever so smart. The build itself generated much speculation – good and bad by residents, but once

the finishing touches were added, everyone agreed….. “it looks great!”

NEWS FROM RAMSGATE VILLAGE

Almost all the village residents turned up for the occasion of the opening of the new Community Centre. Sincere thanks go to Mr. Webster for arranging it all and to the ladies who decorated the tables so beautifully After the welcoming speeches, a wonderful tribute to was paid to Reg and June Hyem for their efforts towards providing ongoing entertainment for our residents. It was mentioned that at the first Christmas Dinner they organised, there were twelve people present. Last year they seated over ninety people. We are indeed fortunate to have two such dedicated people in our village and look forward to enjoying many happy functions in the future.

The opening of the new Ramsgate Village Community Centre took place on

Wednesday 22 February. It was an elegant affair with resident’s and

VIP’s enjoying an afternoon of fellowship, fond memories, achievements, and of course, good

food and wine! John Webster unveiled the commemoration

plaque, where after he paid tribute to residents who had been instrumental in lobbying for this

upgrade. The metamorphoses from a small social area to

the new facility is remarkable. The new building comprises an elegant large dining room, TV lounge, Gym, Hairdressing salon,

Outdoor patio / Braai area and office.

UMDONI NEWS – by Pam Ritchie Here in Umdoni we pride ourselves on our beautiful gardens. The common areas are filled with indigenous plants and although villagers are encouraged to do the same, this is not compulsory. With the recent much-needed rain the gardens have flourished and it is a real joy to see them when strolling round. There are even a few well-tended vegetable and herb gardens behind some of the cottages, well protected from the monkeys. Water is flowing in the streams and the dams are full.

The entertainment calendar is full, with something exciting planned for each month. Recently there was a performance by a group called ”The Beat Routes”, Well known in KZN. Their show, a mixture of swing jazz and New Orleans style music in a night club setting was a smash hit, and the audience, seated at specially decorated tables, couldn’t keep their feet still.

On that note, the villagers are often entertained by the popular “Umdoni Junior Boys’ Choir” (pictured below) at the monthly 100 club draw at the bowling club.

The Vegies (Village entertainment group) are busy planning an evening of skits called “Caught in the act behind the curtains” which is scheduled for the end of May.

When the Bingo players were informed that the bowling club kitchen would be closed for renovations there was much consternation as they thought they would be unable to meet. There was much relief when they found out that as long as they brought along their own kettle and mugs there would be no problem.

Since the pool refurbishment the waterobics groups and casual swimmers have found the pool much more user friendly. Thank you HRV!

NEWS FROM MARGATE RETIREMENT VILLAGE - By CAROL TYERS

2017 Started with a Big Bash in MRV. The RAC’s New Year’s Eve Party in the Azalea Hall on 31st December was a huge success with music, dancing, lucky draws, karaoke, exhibition ballroom dancing and free wine & Juice - what more could we ask for! Those that stayed to see in 2017 heard Big Ben strike 12 and danced the New Year in to the strains of Auld Lang Syne.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Entertainment is key to village life and in February Christopher Duigan – widely regarded as one of South Africa’s leading concert pianists - performed in the Azalea Hall. A thoroughly enjoyable evening. Coming up in March we’ll be celebrating Vera Lynn’s 100th Birthday with “A Nightingale Sang” presented by Evan Roberts, Lisa Bobbert and Anthony Stonier - the theme being an English Pub Evening.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Bowling Club have just hosted the Bowls SA ‘B’ Inter-district Championships 13 – 17 March. Players from around the country descended on our village lending a colourful touch to the greens with their colourful outfits. It was good to hear the very positive comments about our beautiful village and facilities, especially the bowls clubhouse.

Lastly, we are delighted to inform one and all that our MRV ‘Village Vibe’ newsletter is now available on CD and MP3 format for all our vision impaired residents. We’ve worked jointly

towards this with ‘Tape Aids for the Blind’ in Durban, and now it’s a reality!

Thank you “Tape Aids”

OUR KEEP-FIT CLASS CELEBRATE 10 YEARS - and still going strong! Helena Croad and Pixie De Villiers started the 1 hour ‘Keep Fit’ classes 10 years ago. They consulted a professional instructor from “Body Proud Gym’ who put together the

excellent routine they still use today, working every muscle and strengthening the bones by using light weights. They start at 6.30am every week day – come rain, shine

or cold winter mornings. “What a way to start the day – keep going!” (Above: The ‘Keep Fitters” at their Christmas Lunch)
