Welcome to Second Grade at Spring Meadows Elementary,

where we are finding the superhero within!

Mission Statement

The second grade teachers offer a safe and

supportive environment that nurtures the growth of the whole child while providing the academic skills needed to become lifelong learners.

Attendance

Daily attendance and promptness are a requirement for second grade. Our day begins at 7:30 a.m. A student who is tardy will miss out on the beginning of the day and will tend to feel rushed for the rest of the day. If a student misses instructional time due to a medical appointment, please bring a note from the attending physician.

Please try to avoid picking your child up early unless they have a doctor/dental appointment. We work every day until the bell rings. Every minute in the classroom is learning time. If your child will need to be picked up early please send a note that day with the time your child will need to leave. The fewer interruptions we have the more knowledge we obtain.

Address and Phone Number Changes

If you have a change of address or change of phone number (home or work number), please send updated information to the school right away.

GradesPlease remember that grades are not given, they are earned. The more effort your child puts into their work,

the greater their chance of earning higher grades. It is very important that your child remembers to ask for help if he or she does not understand the assignment or what is expected.

Grading Policy: 40% daily work 50% tests 10% homework

The grade scale is set up as follows:

90-100 A80-89 B70-79 C

69 and below F This scale has been established by Judson ISD and can also be found in the Parent/Student Handbook.

Your child will bring home graded work on a weekly basis. Please review your child’s work with him or her. Work may be corrected and returned for a better grade.

If you are interested in keeping track of your child’s grades and averages please sign up for Parent Center

through the Judson website. This will allow you to see, on a daily basis, if your child is completing work on time and working up to their potential.

Daily Your child’s Take-home folder, reading log, and agenda will be sent

home daily and should be returned daily. The agenda is the primarily used for communication between home and school. The child’s daily conduct will be recorded in the agenda. We like for the children to “take ownership” of their behavior, and so often they will record it themselves. If there is nothing written, we probably just didn’t get a chance that day. On these days, though, if there is something that we really need to let you know about, it will get written.

The students should bring home their homework packets on Mondays and should turn it in on Fridays. We know that many of the kiddos are in after school programs (soccer, football, cheer, etc). so, if they have a game or practice one night they still have plenty of time to complete their work.

Students will begin a new reading log each Monday. They are due the following Monday. They should read a total of at least 100 minutes. The number of minutes read equals their grade. 100 minutes=100%. This is an easy grade and as we all know, the more they read, the better readers they become!

Concerns/Questions

Second Grade parents are asked to contact the person(s) directly involved when they have a question or concern. If it involves a teacher, courtesy suggests that the teacher be contacted first. If satisfaction is not achieved, then the principal, assistant principal or counselor should be contacted.

Birthdays

We know that students love to share their birthday celebration with their classmates. On your child’s special day, feel free to send store bought snacks such as small cupcakes, cookies, or snack-sized packages. Due to the short amount of time we will be able to celebrate, please do not send a whole cake that requires cutting or anything that needs to be refrigerated. The treats will be enjoyed at the end of the day. Balloons, candles, etc. are not allowed.

Dress Code/Classroom Climate

* The way that a child dresses for school can affect their ability to focus and learn in school. Please see the parent handbook for the complete dress code.

*The temperature in our classroom varies from day to day. Some days it will be warm and other days it will be cool. We suggest that your child bring a light weight jacket to leave at school if they should need it during the day. Please label your child’s jacket with his or her name.

*We have recess most days and your child will have PE @ least 3 times a week, so it is very important that your child wear proper footwear and clothing.

*Your child may bring a water bottle with a lid to use at school.

Parent Volunteers

All parent volunteers will be required to sign up online before they will be allowed to volunteer at our school. Go to the Judson Webpage then click the “Resources for Parents” button in the white box on the bottom left. Next, scroll down to find “Volunteering” where you can open it in English or Spanish. In addition, all volunteers are required to have a police background check before being allowed to volunteer.

Field Trips

A field trip permission form will be sent home to get a parents signature before a child will be permitted to leave campus for any field trip. All students are required to ride the bus to and from the field trip location; they do not ride in private cars.

Any parent wanting to attend a field trip with their child must fulfill the parent volunteer requirements online and be cleared through the district. Please do this prior to the day of the trip; the clearance can take some time to complete.

Money Collection

Any time you are sending money to school, make certain that it is in a sealed envelope clearly marked with your child’s name, teacher’s name, and purpose for sending the money.

Students should not bring money to school unless it is for school meals or school functions such as the book fair.

Dismissal Procedure

Please make sure your child’s teacher knows how your child is to get home. If there are any changes the administration has asked that you inform your child’s teacher ahead of time in writing. We will not release your child to anyone that is not listed on your child’s dismissal card without written permission. If you pick up your child from school, please do not be offended if you are asked to show an I.D. The usual people who dismiss your child may know you, but there may be a sub or a new person assigned to that duty. Safety is very important; please help us keep our children safe.
