DEAR FRIENDS OF THE MUSEUM,As the Fiscal Year 2015 closed we reflected on how to sum up this past year. And one word comes to mind: transition. This year was marked by numerous transitions, many of them metamorphic.
I was named permanent President and Chief Executive Officer and began to build the vision of the Museum’s future. Since opening the doors in March of 2013, we have been very inward focused as we had to be in order to make adjustments in managing the amazingly large crowds that walked through our doors in the first year. We are now at a unique point in the history of the organization… building on our success by taking the museum to the next level. This provides the wonderful opportunity to turn our focus outward, embracing the community of southern Nevada, and leveraging collective efforts by building collaborations with like-minded organizations who further our work and impact. All in an effort of striving to secure a very critical position of becoming an integral part of the “fabric” of our community. It has been a year of accomplishments also as we continue to work diligently to reach ALL children to ignite a love of lifelong learning and are committed to sharing our unique informal learning atmosphere with all families, regardless of economic means. Over the last year, we welcomed 18,500 children through our field trip program where schools received a deeply discounted rate. And, more than 750,000 visitors have experienced the learning and fun of the museum since we opened our doors in 2013. We created a round-up program that funds admission for families in need to also enjoy the museum experience. We held several ticket promotions, and we distributed more than 3,300 complimentary museum passes – included in this number, the passes that were distributed to other non-profits in our community through our Fall Non-Profit Admission Program.
We know from experience that DISCOVERY Children’s Museum is an important part of the Las Vegas community. We know because through our exhibits and programs we have witnessed the youngest visitor leave
enamored with the possibilities of science and determined to become a teacher so she could bring her students to the museum to learn the science. We have worked with at-risk high school students through our Youthworks program who transformed before our eyes developing the desire to apply to and graduate from college when prior to entering our program that desire was inconceivable.
None of this would be possible without the dedicated Board of Trustees, our lead donor – Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, as well as Las Vegas Sands Foundation and Windsong Trust for their generous gifts. We also thank our many other generous donor and member families. Our success is also in part because of our respected program partners, and our talented staff and volunteers, all of whom play a critical role in the museum’s important work each and every day on behalf of every child, every family.

THE MANY COLORS OF LEARNINGLearning off ers diff erent experiences throughout the museum. Th is past year we continued to focus on the importance of active engagement and its critical role in learning. In addition to our daily programming where the themes change on a monthly basis, and experiences change on a weekly basis, we provided distinctive opportunities for children, and their caregivers to experience the power of engagement and learning.
Opportunities for families to access informal learning opportunities, like the Museum, can be limited due to awareness and fi nances. Th e generous support of Wynn Resorts helped us remove these barriers by funding our Arts Community Outreach initiative that engages families in hands-on interactive learning at festivals throughout the community. Providing exposure to families through community outreach spreads and raises awareness that we are a community resource that welcomes ALL families which is a priority to the Museum.

WORKSHOPSOur workshops extend the visitor’s learning experience giving children and adults alike the opportunity to discover news passions in science and art as well as early childhood development.
SUMMER CAMPS Campers’ curious minds and imaginations were sparked this past summer at the Museum’s widely popular Summer Camp. Children ages 6-12 participated in classes that included programming designed to give children a better understanding of diff erent areas of science and the arts.
Th rough the support of Nevada Arts Council, we were able to implement for at risk youth, an Interactive Summer Puppet Th eatre. Th is experience was geared towards children of reading ages 9 to 12 providing an environment for children to interact in collaborative and individual arts learning. Th roughout the workshop, campers designed and created various types of puppets, wrote scripts, and performed a puppet show for a live audience in the Museum’s performing arts gallery, Fantasy Festival.

DEDICATED TO TEACHING CHILDREN TOMORROW’S SKILLSVisitors can always count on learning something new at the museum. We are dedicated to creating and providing award-winning, interactive, hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), as well as arts and cultural programs.
Th e museum’s core curriculum includes arts & culture, science & nature and early childhood development. Th e nine exhibit halls plus the Traveling Exhibits off er visitors experiences based on curriculum helping children with critical cognitive, motor, social and emotional competencies. Th ese important skills will infl uence them in reaching their full potential, and be eager learners as they journey from youth into adulthood.

JAN. 31 - MAY 3, 2015Goose Bumps! The Science of Fear, developed by the California Science Center, explored this universal emotion that can save our lives. Through fun, interactive challenges, visitors experienced fear in a safe environment and discovered the science behind their physical and emotional responses.

MAY 30 - SEPT. 13, 2015Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice is the fi rst child-centered exhibit in the country dedicated to expanding the understanding on dinosaur habitat and range. It transported families back to the Cretaceous Period (145 – 65 million years ago), the time when dinosaurs last lived on earth, allowing children and adults to explore dinosaur habitats to better understand how these mysterious animals lived.

CHANGING THINGS UPTh e museum presented three very diff erent traveling exhibits during FY 2015. Specialized traveling exhibits are another opportunity for children and their parents to have fun while learning through engagement and hands-on interaction.
SEPT. 20, 2014 - JAN. 4, 2015Storyland transformed seven beloved and award-winning picture books – The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter; The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats; Where’s Spot? by Eric Hill; If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff; Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault; Abuela by Arthur Dorros; and Tuesday by David Wiesner – into three dimensional, bilingual (English and Spanish) play and learning environments.
Our collaborating partner during this traveling exhibit was Spread � e Word Nevada. A Book Drive for this literacy-dedicated non-pro� t was held during the entire run of the traveling exhibit as well as a Scholastic Book Fair generating more than $1600.00 in books credits. Nearly $500 in books were donated that were distributed to Spread � e Word Nevada adopted elementary schools. Additionally, nearly 1,200 Clark County School District kindergartners from 12 elementary schools experienced a school � eld trip to the museum including transportation sponsored by Barrick Gold.

EDUCATION & YOUTH ENRICHMENTGuided by its philosophy to provide vibrant and engaging educational experience, the museum is dedicated to providing children with one-of-a-kind informal learning experiences that are real and relevant to daily life.
YOUTHWORKS PROGRAMOne of the oldest and most successful of the museum’s programs, Youthworks has reached more than 3,500 high school students with engaging educational and volunteer experiences that encourage personal exploration and build confi dence and skills. Cited as a national model program for low-income, at-risk youth by the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, Youthworks benefi ts the community’s underserved youth by encouraging them to stay in school and graduate.
Th e program takes approximately 150-200 teens each year and provides them with job readiness and life skills training, homework support, mentoring and on-the-fl oor work experiences. DISCOVERY ON WHEELSMany local schools and the students they serve are unable to visit the museum so House Calls Outreach Program is delivered directly to Clark County schools, focusing on health science for grades K-5. Th e hands-on and interactive health sciences programs follow specifi c lessons emphasizing national, state, and local curriculum goals. More than 18,000 students experienced the museum in their classrooms this past year. And, nearly 130,000 students have benefi ted from the program since its inception in 2009 when Dr. Joe and Joe Lapan made the initial donation for the program.
