LIFE FROM DEATH
Lent is about Easter, and Easter is about life a er death. As we draw closer to Easter, the Sunday readings become more and more explicit about this. In a rather dry, ma er-of-fact way, today’s reading from St. Paul’s Le er to the Romans teaches that our “mortal bodies” will be raised to life. But in a far more gripping way, the Lord shouts at us through the prophet Ezekiel, “O my people, I will open your graves . . . I will put my spirit in you . . . I have prom-ised, and I will do it.” When Jesus saw the people weeping over the death of Lazarus, he was troubled in spirit and moved by the deepest emo ons. Ap-proaching the tomb, Jesus himself began to weep. He loved Lazarus. In fact, Jesus loved Lazarus so much that he snatched him out of his tomb, back to life. That’s how God loves us.
There is a geography to the liturgy of bap sm that dis lls the journey of faith. Each part of the liturgy is assigned to a dis nct part of the church building. Bap sm, whether of infants carried to church by their parents or of adults following the paschal can-dle into a darkened church at Easter, starts at the door. First, a threshold must be crossed and a new community of meaning and memory encountered for the first me. Then, the celebra on moves to the place for God’s Word. Next, as the litany of the saints is sung, there is a procession to the font. Final-ly, the movement is to the table, the altar of the Eu-charist. There, newly bap zed adults are brought to the sacred meal, or the parents of infants are blessed and reminded that their child will one day share fully in the table’s banquet. Many Catholic churches honor this geography by placing the font near the door, or at least small ves-sels with water. The doorway of our church is a place of memory, and a passageway to a new way of living.
LIFE A well-spent life is the only passport to heaven. ~~Pope Leo XIII
