Welcome to the first ever St. Luke’s Mission Guide! In your hands, you hold a culmination of hours of prayer and planning. We hope that it is a blessing and a challenge to you as you seek to pursue God’s mission for your life. Jesus calls us to live a life of love. There are plenty of opportunities in here to help you in that pursuit. If you are looking for other possibilities check out our L-Team Lineup at www.stlukesfedway.org or start an L-team doing what God has put on your heart to do!

There are organizations we support through our congregational tithe, 10 for the World. The Director of Missions and Pastor Chris work with an advisory team to distribute ten percent of the church’s total received tithe annually.

The word "Synod" in The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod comes from the Greek words that mean "walking

together." The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod unites congregations to vigorously make known the love of Christ by word

and deed within our churches, communities, and the world. The

three tenets of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod are sola scriptura (God reveals Himself through His Word), sola gratia (we are saved completely by grace

alone) and sola fida (grace is not by our actions but received by faith).

Lutheran Braille Workers (LBW) is one of the largest providers of Christian Braille and specialized Large Print in the world. All publications by LBW are offered without charge and are made possible through the efforts of thousands of faithful volunteers. These volunteers, located in about 200 Work Centers throughout the United States and Canada, including right here at St. Luke’s, produce more than 250,000 volumes of material each year. Gifts of time and generous donations make it possible to send Christian material in more than 30 languages to visually impaired people in more than 120 countries.

The story of Roger and Isha Hulsford in Bolivia began in 1990. The two of them began by encouraging

whoever they could to come out on the streets, reaching out to the street teenagers of the city of Santa Cruz. They began to gain the children's trust by giving them a view to see themselves come off the streets and

undergo a complete restoration in their lives, thereby assisting them to reintegrate into the society that had rejected them.Today, there is a staff of 21 that serves in the following areas: street work, a drop in center, medical post and a restoration home for boys one one for girls.

A seafarer spends many long days at sea between ports. While it is true that they are fed while at sea, there are

many things that the seafarer does not have access to aboard ship. When the ship is in port, the seafarer must leave the ship to obtain anything he/she needs. The work schedule is so varied and unpredictable that often times

they are left with a very short time to do whatever they have to do. The Tacoma Seafarers Center personnel are ready to help. We share the love of Christ through helping to take care of the physical and emotional needs of the seafarers.

Serena Little serves the Lord through LCMS World Mission as a GEO missionary in Macau, a special administrative region of China. Reach Out provides shelter, food, case management and other support services to homeless men in Federal Way. The desire is to move them toward self-sufficiency. Last year, Reach Out’s shelter was hosted by both Calvary Lutheran and Steel Lake Churches during the winter months, while many other churches and organizations contributed to meal service.

New Hope Christian Fellowship, our neighbor to the south, is spiritually and physically active in the Federal Way community. They believe in becoming the living Gospel, participating in what Jesus is already doing here. They believe in love and service and sharing resources such as showers and meals with brothers and sisters who are homeless, displaced, out of work or disadvantaged.

Operation Blessing serves the residents of the Federal Way School District by assisting with financial support in one of the following areas: mortgage, rent, utilities, gasoline or other miscellaneous areas. Operation Blessing is a service provided with the love of the Lord. All funds are provided through 10 for the World and from other donations by St. Luke’s members.

To serve, rescue, and transform those in greatest need through the grace of Jesus Christ. The Union Gospel Mission provides many different resources for those in need. Addressing the complex issues surrounding homelessness while meeting the ever-changing needs of men, women and children in our community takes many forms. The Mission has a number of programs created to do just this. Men, women and children are provided with food, shelter, residential drug and alcohol recovery, life skills training, transitional housing and spiritual development among other things.

The Name “Teleios” is a Greek word which means “adult, full grown or mature.” Teleios is founded to help men reach maturity in Christ through building bonds of friendship with other men. They utilize weekly small group meetings, prayer retreats and service opportunities as vehicles for growth and maturity in Christ. The groups help men bring greater balance to their lives, positively impacting their relationship with Jesus Christ, their family, career, workplace and community.

Federal Way Community Caregiving Network (FWCCN)FWCCN serves the community of Federal Way through emergency assistance and free community meals. Meals are served at various locations around Federal Way.

Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to providing decent, affordable homes for those in need. St. Luke’s has a long history of serving with Habitat. We are looking forward to a unique partnership with other churches in the area called the Apostle’s Build. Twelve churches will come together to complete a home for a family. Because of the state of the housing crisis, the A p o s t l e ’ s Build group will put our r e s o u r c e s t o w a r d purchasing a foreclosed home.

Young Life doesn’t start with a program. It starts with adults concerned enough about kids to go to them, on their turf and in their culture, building bridges of authen-t i c friendship. These

relationships don’t happen overnight — they take time, patience, trust and consistency. We believe in the pow-er of presence. Kids’ lives are dra-

matically impacted when caring adults come alongside them, sharing God’s love with them. Because their leader believes in them, they begin to see that their lives have great worth, meaning and purpose.

Concordia Seminary serves church and world by providing theological education and leadership centered in the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ for the formation of pastors, missionaries, and leaders in the name of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.

Scholarships are potentially awarded to those students seeking higher education that leads to church work, whether pastoral, Christian education, or other possibilities. Two scholarships were awarded this year – each in the amount of $1,500.

At Concordia we believe each child is a unique creation from God. We value each individual and strive to discover how we can best help each student succeed. We inspire, coach, challenge, accommodate, and minister in any way we can, loving each child as God loves us. We see ourselves not as a private school, but rather as a Christian school.

St. Luke’s has been sending mission teams to the remote fishing village of Hoonah, Alaska for ten years. Each summer, a team of youth and adults travel to Alaska to provide Vacation Bible School for the children, as well as provide basketball camp, adult bible studies, and assistance with construction projects. Prayer requests include: spiritual and moral guidance, healing of broken families and/or chronic alcohol and substance abuse, a decline in teen pregnancy and the struggles for survival.Email [email protected] for more information.

The Gleaners Mission is a “first-step” mission for Middle School students, where they can step outside of their own lives to serve the world in great ways. St. Luke’s has partnered with the Okanagan Gleaners Society, a non-profit, non-denominational Christian organization located in Oliver, BC, Canada. For a week this summer, we help process fresh donated vegetables into dehydrated soup mixes. These soup mixes are then sent out all over the world not only to help nourish the hungry, but to help spread the love and good news of Jesus Christ.

Contact Wolf at [email protected] for more information regarding this mission trip.

The Mexico Outreach mission trip is all about partnering with a church called Nuestro Refugio, “Our Refugio”, in the community of Ensenada, Mexico. This trip is primarily for high school and college age students who desire to step beyond our borders and to partner with our brothers and sisters in Christ in Mexico. Our trip helps serve the church and community with a children’s ministry program and service projects for a week this summer. Our partnership is facilitated through the Mexico Outreach program at Azusa Pacific University. Azusa provides training materials, a camp and meals during our stay in Mexico as well as a morning and evening worship experience. We are committed to be in prayer and support to Pastor Samuel Madrigal and Nuestro Refugio and their Christ centered “Ministerio de Amor”.

Contact Wolf at [email protected] for more information regarding ongoing ministry.

This year we launched a partnership with the community of Mahlalini, Swaziland through World Vision Church Partnership. Our commitment to this community is one that will stretch over the coming years as we walk alongside the people, pray for them, care for them and support community development projects. We are excited to have this privilege of connecting and inviting the people of Mahlalini into our lives.

In Swaziland twenty-six percent of people are infected with HIV/AIDS. Forty-two percent of pregnant women are infected. One in five children is an orphan.

World Vision Swaziland is working to raise the local community members to work through the different issues they are facing: finding sources of clean water, food security, and economic development among other things. We look forward to writing letters to our sponsored children, learning some Siswati words, being mutually encouraged and visiting the community.

We are called to be a light in our community. God has called us to work with Mirror Lake Elementary, to be a light and an encouragement to the families there. Approximately 75% of Mirror Lake families live at or below the Federal poverty line. We want to be an encouragement to the school, families and faculty through events, mentoring and providing resources for the neediest of families.
