In the Gathering Area there are special envelopes to help our Outreach Ministry, which this year we gave over $62,000 in assistance to the needy of our area. We have added another Special Envelope to help our sister parish, Mary Mother of Mercy, in Mongolia. Whatever donation we will receive we will send to them to help build up their growing Catholic Parish.

There will be a special second collection the week of August 10/11.

Please mark tour calendar and come prepared the weekend of August 10/11, to support the Mission Cooperative Plan in their ecumenical project between the struggling Catholic and Orthodox Churches in Georgia.

THE SACRAMENTAL LIFE OF OUR CHURCH THE SACRAMENT OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST THE HOLY SACRIFICE OF THE MASS Saturday: Vigil - 5:00 PM Sunday Schedule: 8:00AM 10:00AM

12 NOON 5:00 PM Weekdays: Monday through Saturday: 9:00 AM Holy Day: See Schedule in Bulletin

COMMUNION TO THE SICK is taken by Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist on a regular basis to those confined to their homes. Please call the Parish Center.

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM is celebrated on most Sundays at 1:30 PM (not during Lent). A family must be registered in the parish, attend the baptismal preparation class, and cooperate with the regulations established by the parish. Our baptismal class is held on the 2nd Monday of the month at 8:00 PM. Please call the Parish Center to register any time during your pregnancy.

THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION is celebrated on Saturday between 11:30 AM and 12:30 PM in the Chapel or by appointment.

THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION is celebrated once a year by the Bishop’s delegate, here at St. Augustine. A candidate must successfully complete our Religious Education program. Adult Confirmation is held on Pentecost Sunday and any interested adults should contact the Parish Center.

THE SACRAMENT OF THE SICK is administered at home to any Catholic who is seriously ill. Please call the Parish Center. Any parishioner admitted to a local hospital should contact the Catholic Hospital Chaplain through the hospital. A family member should contact the parish when someone is admitted to the hospital. We will gladly pray for any members who are sick, whether at home or in the hospital, at our Sunday Masses; however, it is necessary for the family to “request” it.

THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY is celebrated by the Pastor or one of our deacons. Weddings may be scheduled on Friday evening, Saturday, or Sunday afternoon. Only a ceremony is permitted on Sunday. The pastor will confirm the date so couples should contact the Parish Center at least ONE YEAR in advance. All the necessary information will be sent to you. The attendance at Pre-Cana or an Engaged Encounter Weekend is required. One must be a registered member of the parish. Our parish upholds the Gospel values and the Church’s teachings regarding the sacredness of marriage and those couples choosing to live together in contradiction of those values, will receive a simple ceremony and all Diocesan regulations followed.

THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY ORDERS and RELIGIOUS LIFE: If you are considering serving God as a priest, deacon, or religious, you may contact your parish priest, deacon, or religious; or phone the Diocesan Office of Vocations at (732) 562-1990.

“Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions. Luke 12:15

The Gospel message today is contrary to our modern culture where advertising continually tries to convince us that our value lies in the things we possess. Jesus showed us that our true value lies in the way we live our lives. He challenges us to not hoard material possessions, but rather to live a grateful and generous lifestyle and become more “other-centered” and less “self-centered.”

MEDITATION FOR AUGUST 4th, 2019 Following foolishly, after the things of this world leads us in the wrong direction. Temptation is all around us. It is tempting to get ahead at the expense of others, and we are tempted to put material wealth ahead of spiritual wealth. Following Christian virtues requires grace, and takes practice and hard work. Let us pray for that grace, For what profit comes to man from all the toil and

anxiety of heart if we are not rich in what matters to God? Our first reading speaks about of the foolishness of vanity and misdirected labor. Saint Paul writes to the Colossians, instructing them not to return to their old way of life, but to seek what is above. In the Gospel, Jesus tells the crowd to Take care to guard against all greed, and then relates the parable of the foolish rich man.

ATTENTION LADIES… AN AUTUMN RETREAT BY THE SEA

A retreat by the Shore! As Summer is ending and Fall is on its’ way, the kids are back in school and before the holidays are upon us, what could be better than to take the opportunity to spend some time for yourself on Retreat at the Jersey shore? This year, the retreat will be Friday evening, September 27 to Sunday afternoon, September 29 at St. Joseph’s by the Sea in Mantoloking, NJ. It is a beautiful house on the beach run by the Religious Teachers Filippini, which is fully air-conditioned, featuring private rooms with full bath accommodations between rooms.

Join us with Daria Hartman, Facilitator, on an introductory, nothing strenuous, no yoga experience necessary retreat. The yoga sessions are easy and some can be done sitting in a chair. She adds “If you want to participate in a session or two, or just spend the weekend in your robe and slippers and be pampered, have a room to yourself, read a book, walk the beach, enjoy meals prepared for you and just BE. There is no need to DO. We are human beings, not human doings. We do sun salute in the morning but some just like to sit and watch and just listen. The Spirit of God is asking amazing women to gather in this beautiful, peaceful setting to find out how they can transition, just as the seasons transition, in the colorful, whimsical, loving flow of Life. Come to experience the freedom and Peace Jesus had in mind. Come to be yourself.” Mass & prayer time will be part of the weekend.

Cost is $260 for the weekend, which includes Friday night subs, Saturday and Sunday meals. Space is limited, so reserve your space soon by emailing Kim Malerba at [email protected] or calling Kim at 973-476-4275. A $100 deposit is required for the weekend. Checks payable to St. Joseph’s by the Sea. All women are welcome, parishioners and non-parishioners, so bring a friend along.

Come away with us, experience the beauty of the shore and the serenity of the sea and refresh your spirit.

Our St. Augustine Parishioners are cordially invited to celebrate their 25th or 50th Wedding Anniversary

and renew their marriage vows with Bishop James F. Checchio at a special Evening Prayer Service, Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi in Metuchen on Sunday, October 27, 2019 at 4:00 PM.

Registration is required and should be done online at: diometuchen.org/silver-and-gold.

If you are unable to access or have any questions or concerns, please contact Angela Marshall, at the diocese, in the Office of Human Life and Dignity, 732-562-1990, ext. 1543 or [email protected] or www.diometuchen.org

Registration will close on October 11, 2019. Although no fee is required, in the past many Jubilarian couples have given a donation of gratitude to the Church in memory of this special occasion. Donations of Gratitude may be made online or calling 732-562-1543.

BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY

Have you lost a loved one? Are you hurting? St. Augustine Bereavement Ministry, under the leadership of Deacon Jim Rivera, meets on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month. The meetings are held in the Augustine room at 7:30 pm. All are welcome and registration is not necessary. For further information, please call Deacon Rivera at 732-672-3636 or Joan Campisano at 732-828-9176,

“The Way of St. Juan Diego” Saturday, September 21, 2019

During this Year of Spiritual Awakening we are setting out on this one day walking pilgrimage as part of our preparation for the consecration of the diocese to Our Lady of Guadalupe in December. The particular grace that we are asking Our Blessed Mother to gain for us is a new outpouring of the Gift of the Holy Spirit, as on the day of Pentecost, so that we can be empowered to “set a fire in the heart of our world!” Bishop Checchio recognizes that spiritual renewal among the baptized is crucial for a new work of evangelization to commence in the diocese and for this reason he convoked this year and the consecration. We invite everyone of able body to make this one-day 9-mile pilgrimage in beautiful Hunterdon County in preparation for the consecration of the Diocese of Metuchen to Our Lady of Guadalupe, particularly our youth and families. Registration forms and details are available in the Parish Office.

July 26, 2019

Dear Father Bob,

My daughter and I are writing to thank you for allowing us once again to sit in the Gathering Area to collect signed letters to send to the NJDEP. Close to 400 people signed a letter! It brought joy to my heart to see so many caring people! We are very happy with the results and know that we received more this time because of your announcements at the beginning and end of every Mass. The Franklin Township Task Force and Environmental Defenders are very grateful that you gave us this opportunity and that it was so fruitful. Please continue to keep this cause in your prayers, as well as the end of all new fossil fuel projects in America (15 slated to be built or already in progress in NJ!)

Thank you again, and God Bless you!

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BECOMING A CATHOLIC?

Or perhaps you are a baptized Catholic who never completed the Sacraments of Initiation (Confirmation and Eucharist). The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is just

for you! Gather with others who desire to know the Lord Jesus Christ in the truth of the Catholic Faith, as we un-dergo catechesis, reflect on the scriptures, and contem-plate our call to faith in Christ in preparation for Baptism and/or reception and completion of the Sacraments of Initiation. Meetings are held on Sundays at 8:00 am in Father McGivney Hall (followed by 10:00 am Mass). If you are interested in getting connected, please call the Parish Center at 732-297-3000. Deacon Denis

ARE YOU REGISTERED?

Are you a registered parishioners at St. Augustine? If you come to St. Augustine regularly and do not use our offering envelopes, you are not considered registered parishioners. Those seeking sponsorship forms for Baptism or Confirmation must be registered parishioners. Registration is also necessary for Baptisms and Marriage.

Please contact the Parish Office to obtain registration papers.

KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOUR PARISH OFFICE

Are you new to the area? Are you a registered member of the parish?? Are you moving???

If you have recently moved into the area and have not yet registered in the parish, we encourage you to become a registered member. You may do so in a variety of ways: you can ask an usher for a registration packet after Mass; by stopping by or calling the Parish Office to obtain a registration packet. Once registered, you will receive quarterly mailing of parish offertory envelopes.

The use of an Offertory envelope helps us to track Mass attendance which affects your status as an active or inactive parishioner. Mass attendance, not the content of the offertory envelope, is reviewed twice a year and a letter is sent to those who have not used their envelopes in a specified time period.

It is necessary to be an ACTIVE, REGISTERED member of the parish in order to obtain Sponsor Letters which are needed to act as Godparents for Baptism or Sponsors for Confirmation. Sponsor letters cannot be given to those considered inactive (or not registered). We also ask that anyone seeking to be married in our church or to baptize a child be registered in the parish. If you are moving out of the parish, please contact the office around the time of your move so we may change our records accordingly and avoid sending you envelopes you don’t need.

Any questions, please call the Parish Office, 732-297-3000.

Dear Pastor,

The Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry will be hosting a young adult retreat, August 17, at Rutgers Catholic Center from 10am-6pm. The retreat is titled, What is it worth? We will have a series of talks that will be given as well as prayer, discussion groups, meals, and time to socialize. We would live if you could help us! First, please pray for our participants and our leadership within the young adult community of Metuchen as we prepare for this retreat. For your reference, the Church defines a young adult as ages 18-39. All young adults are welcome to register at diometuchen.org/ya-retreat for only $20! This will include two meals!

Thank you for your time and help promoting this event. If you have any questions or concerns you can call John Glynn at 732-243-4576 or email him at [email protected].

INTENTIONS OF OUR HOLY FATHER We are invited to unite with our Holy Father, Pope Francis, for this universal intention during the month of August.

Families, Schools of Human Growth. That families, through their life of prayer and love, become ever more clearly “schools of true human growth”.
