The sounds of this year’s Mission Folk Music Festival have faded, but the experi-ence is not one that will be forgotten soon.
Thousands of music lovers made their way to Fraser River Her-itage Park this past weekend to enjoy the international sounds and dances of groups from West Africa, Asia, Europe, and across
North America.From the opening sal-
vos of the Korean per-cussion group Dulsori to the closing sets of Ireland’s Dervish, fes-tival founder Francis Edwards said the event was one of the best ones ever held.
“It was an excep-tional festival artisti-cally, technically, and organizationally,” said Edwards.
“Ticket sales were good, audiences won-derful, the music – sim-
ply amazing, and the weather, perfect.”
Attendance numbers exceeded Edwards’ expectations, but he notes the final numbers are not yet known.
“There were many musical highlights over the weekend, from the main stage performances to the mini-blues festival,” commented Edwards. “Lemon Bucket Orkes-tra and Dulsori joined forces for a sponta-neous musical outburst
in the middle of the audience in front of the main stage on Friday evening. Pure acoustic delight.”
Another unforget-table festival moment happened on Sunday night during the festi-val finale when Ruth Moody had the entire audience singing with her as she belted out her acclaimed song “One Voice.”
But perhaps the scene that stood out the most was the final song, Stan
Rogers’ “Northwest Passage,” which many consider Canada’s sec-ond national anthem, performed by all the festival artists and the audience.
“It was a wonderful and emotive close to a magical weekend,” said Edwards, who also thanked the volunteers who helped bring the festival together.
The 28th annual Mis-sion Folk Music Festi-val is scheduled for July 24-26, 2015.

Sex offender warningCarol AunMISSION RECORD
Local police have not received any complaints so far related to a man with a sexual offence conviction who recently moved to the District of Mission.
Kosta Tsekouras, 32, of Richmond, relocated to Mission about two weeks ago after he was released on a peace bond for incidents dat-ing back to 2010.
Earlier this week, Mission RCMP issued a notice to local residents
to let them know Tsek-ouras is living in the community. According to the Rich-mond Mount-ies, Tsekouras has failed to comply with p r o b a t i o n orders in the past.
“It is not c o m m o n for us to issue public w a r n i n g s , ” explained Mission RCMP Sgt. Shaun Wright. “When the need to warn
the public based primar-ily upon the likelihood of re-offending, and
the nature of the offence is warranted in contrast to the privacy right of that individual, we will issue public warn-ings.”
Police are not disclosing in which neigh-bourhood Tsek-
ouras is residing.“He is supervised 24
hours a day,” said Wright.
Conditions for Tsek-ouras include not attend-ing parks, public pools, playgrounds, schools or daycares. He is also not to be in the company of anyone under the age of 16, or be outside of his residence without being escorted by a supervisor.
Tsekouras is 6’3” tall and weighs 220 pounds. He has dark brown hair and brown eyes.
Anyone who sees Tsekouras breaching the conditions of his release should call 911.

DON’T LET YOUR TALENTS RUSTMost of us have a particular talent for something. Some of us are creative, while some are good with people, and others may have a talent for mechanical things. Whatever our talents may be– most of us do have more than one–it is important for each of us to develop them to their fullest. One of the saddest of missed opportunities is not fully developing our talents because we may miss out on a more fulfilled life. The American poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier wrote, “For of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these: ‘It might have been!’” Although our talents may be modest, rest assured that we are all good at something, even if we are not sure exactly where our talents lie. Psychologists have developed aptitude tests to an exact science, and it is easy enough to find out what we are good at if we don’t already know. We should all do some thinking about what we are good at, or perhaps take a test, then develop a plan for putting our talents to good use.
Every one to whom much is given, of him will much be

OPINION Published & printed by Black Press Ltd. at 33047 First Avenue, Mission V2V 1G2
The success of Brooke Kienas and the rest of Mission’s athletes at the recent BC Summer Games in Nanaimo was a reminder of just how special the provincial Games initiative is.
Mission, of course, doesn’t have to go back far in its history to recall how such an event can electrify a community – the 2014 BC Winter Games were hosted here in February.
That event involved 1,847 athletes and 1,745 volunteers, and generated $1.6 million in direct economic benefit. That figure rises to $3.2 million when indirect and induced economic factors are included.
The 2014 Summer Games made a similar impression on Nanaimo, where organizers are estimating an economic impact of $2.6 million during the Summer Games.
But the true beauty of the Games isn’t
in the dollars and cents – rather, it’s about the friendships formed, the life-long mem-ories made, and the amazing performances authored by the athletes.
Case in point: swimmer Kienas’s incredi-ble seven-medal showing in the pool, which was likely the biggest medal haul by any ath-lete in Nanaimo. She’s a big fan of Mission’s Olympic swimming star Brent Hayden, a BC Games alum himself, and her medal-mag-net performance goes a long way towards fuelling her own Olympic dreams.
Mission’s other two Summer Games ath-letes, Bryce Mackenzie (two track and field bronze medals) and Cole Barker (gold in rugby) also showed extremely well.
Success on the provincial stage is hard-earned, and thus, supremely sweet. We cel-ebrate with you.

YOUR VIEWSFolk fest a joyful and inspiring event
Re: Mission Folk Music Festival.
I’ve been living in Vancouver for 20 years now and this weekend was the first time my family and I had a chance to visit Mission. We had heard about the Mis-sion Folk Music Festi-val (MFMF) and knew some of the perform-ers so we decided to take the short drive and take in the event.
Being a long-time musician and mem-ber of the Canadian music industry for several decades now, I have to say that I and my family were overwhelmed with the incredible joyful-ness that we all expe-
rienced. It was inspir-ing, comforting, and so very amazing.
We have the Van-couver Folk Festival here – an awesome event in itself, and having now expe-rienced the MFMF, I can tell you that we were blown away by the performances, the atmosphere, the genuine kindness of the people, the warm community, and the event itself.
Not only was the music wonderful, but there was space with, and around, the people to enjoy an uncrowded commu-nity.
The schedule of events seemed to
flow like a well-writ-ten script of a clas-sic story, a book you can’t put down, or a movie to which you are drawn.
It was a joy we won’t soon forget, and one we will certainly tell our friends and fam-ily about, and return to as an annual fam-ily event.
Thank you for the wonderful people, community and spirit that makes Mission the beautiful place it is, and the Mission Folk Music Festival the enlightening and joyful event that it so clearly is.
Mark Fenster and familyVancouver
TAKE NOTICE that pursuant to Sections 26 and 40 of the Community Charter, the District of Mission proposes to close, undedicate and dispose of part of a highway (Sabo Street) dedicated on Plan 41928, shown as the shaded area on the following map.
“District of Mission Highway Closing and Undedication (Sabo Street) Bylaw 5446-2014” and a full-size copy of the plan may be inspected at the Office of the Manager of Corporate Administration, 8645 Stave Lake Street, Mission, BC, V2V 4L9, between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday, except any statutory holiday.
The road in question is an undeveloped portion of Sabo Street adjacent to 13324 and 13330 Sabo Street which contains driveway access to those properties. Due to the steep slope north of the undeveloped portion of the road, construction of the road for vehicular access is not feasible. Council wishes to close a portion of the road right-of-way adjacent to 13324 Sabo Street that is approximately 6.0 metres (19.7 ft.) wide, and sell that portion to the owners of the adjacent property (Moira and Clayton Bush) at the price of $4,694.30 ($8.44 per square metre). This price is based on the BC Assessment appraised land value of the property. The subject portion of the road right-of-way has an area of 556.2 square metres (5,986.9 sq. ft.). The closure of the road right-of-way will not impact the functionality of Sabo Street as a road.
Legal Description of Land to be disposed of: All and singular that portion of road dedicated on Plan 41928, shown outlined in bold and marked as “PARCEL A” on the draft reference plan prepared by Devon Pallmann, British Columbia Land Surveyor, completed on May 5, 2014.
“District of Mission Highway Closing and Undedication (Sabo Street) Bylaw 5446-2014” will be considered for adoption by Council on Monday, August 18, 2014. If you wish to make a representation on the proposed closure, undedication and disposal of the portion of highway, please submit your comments in writing to the undersigned at 8645 Stave Lake Street, Mission, BC, V2V 4L9 no later than 4:30 pm, Friday, August 15, 2014.
You may forward your submission by:
• mailing or delivering to the Acting Manager of Corporate Administration’s office, PO Box 20, 8645 Stave Lake Street, Mission, BC, V2V 4L9
• faxing to 604.826.1363 (Attn: Acting Manager of Corporate Administration)

As the saying goes, things get better with age, and I think all can agree that this can be said for Mission Fest. We proudly hosted an estimated 6000 people on 1st Avenue, and smiles could be seen all the way down the street. The number of people who made this day such a success is extensive; Rhett Nicholson, who founded this incredible event when he saw the need for free family events, and gave many hours of his own time, Mission Community Services for organizing the non-profi t vendors, the District of Mission, Mike Younie in particular, for being so incredibly helpful and helping to make sure everything was in place, all the vendors for choosing to come to Mission Fest, and the downtown businesses who participated so enthusiastically and welcomed many customers, new and old, to downtown Mission, our many generous sponsors, and our tireless team of volunteers who organized the car show,
vendors, entertainment and more, all with a smile and enthusiasm, who saw through the planning from start to fi nish. Our volunteers showed up at dawn, emptied garbage cans, handed out water, climbed ladders, hung signs, and more, all because they believe in community and in Downtown Mission. The biggest thank you goes to the Missionites who came to Mission Fest to enjoy all downtown has to offer and for all the kind and positive feedback you have given about Mission Fest and Downtown Mission. There are some exciting things in store for Downtown Mission, and we have so many wonderfully unique businesses. Our hope is that one day very soon all of Mission will come to see that downtown Mission is worth investing in, as many Mission Fest spectators saw for themselves on Saturday. We look forward to next years Mission Fest and to seeing your all downtown very soon.
This past weekend the Downtown Business Association held the 4th annual Mission Fest, a free street festival held on 1st Avenue, and it was a smashing success!

THIS IS OUR MISSIONDistrict Update
Don’t push your limits when playing in water. Many cases of drowning are the result of fatigue and swimmers being too far from shore. · If you cannot swim stay, out of the water and seek
the shade instead. · Wear a personal fl otation device. The depth
and strength of lakes and rivers are often underestimated resulting in tragic outcomes.
· Tubers: always wear a life jacket and a helmet. · Do not put your feet in fast moving water that is
deeper than the length of your arm. · Remember alcohol and water don’t mix. · Watch your speed. Don’t race to the lake,
and don’t race on the lake. Speed is a major contributor to incidents on the roadways and on the water. Slow down.
Don’t get lost in the backcountry and stay on the beaten path. If you do not know the area you are
travelling in, a number of dangers could present themselves. · Don’t go alone, and if you travel to the back
country go prepared. · Have a return time planned, and let someone
know where you are going. · Take basic items with you even on a day trip
(map, compass, fl ashlight, matches, fi rst aid kit including emergency blanket and appropriate clothing)
· Bring along ample food and water. · Know your own limits and stay on or near the
path. · Know the area and never separate from those you
are hiking with. · Bring along an emergency locator beacon or a
fully charged cell phone with a GPS unit.

Keeping Mission in bloomWayne Makinson
received the Best Over-all Effort award for his garden from the Mission Communities in Bloom (C in B) Society during its annual awards night at the Mission Leisure Centre. Makinson also received the top award in the residential back-yard category.
Sixteen awards were handed out July 17, including ones to this year’s unsung heroes Denyse Taverner and Bill Elliot.
“(Taverner is) among the first to respond to a call for volunteers, unafraid of the heavy work, a generous donor, and a loyal advocate of several local groups.”
Stewart described Elliot as a builder, educa-tor, gardener and a pas-sionate history student with an eye for details. “Although semi-retired from teaching, this man has developed strong links with our public schools by identifying teachers that are devel-
oping new environmen-tal and garden projects,” said Stewart.
OTHER AWARD RECIPIENTS ARE:
• Jennifer Scutt - Resi-dential Front Yard
• Doug and Diana Youngson - Residen-tial Total Yard
• Mike Cuthbertson - Residential Total Yard
• Elisa Williams - Vege-table Garden
• Frances and Ed Storozynski - Envi-ronmental Project
• Museum Edwardian Garden (Gorilla Gar-deners) - Heritage Project

The fourth annual Mission Fest was last Saturday on First Avenue, and drew thou-sands of participants. The street was closed to vehicle traffic for the event, which featured martial arts demonstrations, pony rides, live music and more. There were eight bouncy castles, including Alcatraz, pictured above, which was a 40-foot-long structure that adults could use too.

Safety Tip:Crashes involving driver fatigue peak in the summer, due in part to hot weather and long road trips. Get enough rest before you head out. If you feel drowsy, pull over safely and take a nap. The
only cure for drowsiness is sleep – it’s better to arrive late than not at all.
Question of the WeekThe posted speed limit has been raised by 10 km/h on many major highways in B.C. If you have driven some of those stretches, have you found cars passing you beyond the raised limit?

Challenged by one Hellcat of a muscle carPortland, Oregon – Do I take the red key or the black key?The black key limits horsepower to 500. Jaws drop. If you put it in valet mode, rpms are limited to 4,000. Gosh, I really hope I can take the red key…This Matrix-like conundrum is a good one to have. Take the safer route (black key) if you’d rather ease off on harness-ing the gargantuan horsepower of the 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat. It’s the most powerful production Chrysler V8, as well as the most powerful produc-tion muscle car to date, so it needs to be treated with respect. But then again, the red key will allow me to tame this muscled feline one shift at a time, whether through the 6-speed manual or an 8-speed auto-matic.Looks like the decision has been made for me. Red key is sitting pretty in the centre console. And it’s in track mode. Electronic intervention is minimal. I
have access to all 707 horsepower and I’m at the Portland International Race-way. I’d say this will be a heavenly day. With a new look on the inside and outside, the 2015 Dodge Challenger is ready to take on its Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro competition head-on.According to market research, two thirds of Challenger buyers say they don’t cross-shop anything else. That said, those who did cross-shop, and decided to go in another direction, attributed it to its archaic interior. That problem is no more. Now Challengers come with a driv-er-centric and cool-looking interior setup. Whether you have the standard 5-inch touchscreen or the optional 8.4-inch (the biggest touchscreen in its segment), you can’t lose. Then there’s a new 7-inch multi-view driver informa-tion display instrument cluster that adds to the chic execution; standard
on all models. Not to mention, it displays all the vital stats that you’ll need when driving.Combined with physical buttons – for those who don’t like to control everything by a screen – its evolutionary changes certainly help its cause. A lot.But the heart of the Chal-lenger lies underneath its sheet metal – the curves and edges that were inspired by the ’71 Challenger. When it comes to engine choices, you’re not without options. There are four.
Here’s the skinny: 1) A 3.6L, Pentastar V6 producing 305 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque2) A 5.7L, V8 HEMI with 372 horse-power (with the 8-speed automatic) 375 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque with the 6-speed manual3) A 6.4L, V8 HEMI with 485 horse-power and 475 lb-ft of torqueLast but not least,4) A supercharged 6.2L, V8 HEMI with 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. All engines except the V6s can be paired with a manual or an automatic. The V6s only come with the 8-speed automatic. Again, no matter what you choose, you’ll come out singing. Back to the road.Having tested all four models – with
different packages – the thing that stood out the most to me is how good of a car it actually is. Even on a quaint suburban drive through a national park where speed limits were posted at 35 mph, I was impressed with its road manners. And considering I had almost 485 horsepower (with the 6.4L engine), it was as docile as a lethargic lion, yet ready to pounce when the opportunity presented itself. Both track time and road time added to the
multi-dimensional admiration for the two-door.Sure, visibility isn’t ideal. The C pillars are huge and cut into sightlines when looking rearward. The rear seats don’t offer a ton of legroom – especially for the individual stuck in the middle – but heck, it does have room for five.Fuel economy, well, you’re not buying this car for its estimated numbers! That’s for sure. But it does offer an emotional experi-ence. It turns heads and is sexy as hell.Even the V6 on the track did a bang up job. And with a starting MSRP of $28,995, the Canadian-built Challenger is up to the task, will kick butts, and take names. All at the same time.Visit www.dodge.ca for more details.

Florence Grace, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 17th, 2014 at Mission Memorial Hospital, at the age of 95. She was happily married to her beloved Cecil Gerard McNicol on December 24, 1940, until his death on November 3, 2001.
Florence was born in The Pas, Manitoba to Robert Robison and
Mary Margaret Sinclair (b. McAuley; Johnston). She is survived by her sister Marion Cross Tremeer (Sinclair), half brother Robert Cecil Johnston and sister-in-law Catherine Vickery-Johnston.
She was predeceased by her daughter Annabelle Grace McKie (McNicol), brother Robert Robison Sinclair, step-brothers Arnold Ross Johnston, Thorbin (Thorby) Johnston, John Garfi eld Johnston, and Claude Gerald Johnston, and stepsisters Colleen Perry (Johnston) and Muriel Campbell.
Her father passed away when she was nine, creating a lot of hardship for the family. Her mother remarried and she was blessed with a large extended family that she cherished. In 1940, she married Cecil and followed him to B.C. when he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army and was stationed in Chilliwack. She returned to northern Manitoba when he went overseas and several years later the family moved to Winnipeg. Both Cecil and Florence fell in love with B.C. and followed their daughter Anne to Vancouver when she fell ill. Initially settling in North Delta, Cecil and Florence relocated to Armstrong but returned to Chilliwack and then Langley before Cecil’s death. She remained in Langley for several years, until her declining health forced her to move to a retirement home in Mission, where she spent her last years.
Florence is survived by Annabelle’s family, grandchildren (Darrell (Gail) McKie and David Robert (Tannice) McKie, and great grandchildren Kayla & David McKie and Dawson & Camryn McKie; her daughter Vada McNicol, grandchildren Jamie (Jane) Penner, Christene (Darryl) Saam, Marnie (Wayne) McGhie, Shaun Penner and great grandchildren Amanda, Katie & Darryl Jr. Saam, Sarah Penner & Nicole (Brett) Schaefer, William & Emily McGhie; her sons, Frank (Ginette), Ted (Cheryl) and Rob (Nancy), and grandchildren Leigh McNicol (Ryan Dafoe), Mitchell McNicol, Kerri McNicol and great grandchildren Samara & Layton Dafoe.
We would like to especially thank Nancy McNicol (Balducci) who devoted the last 5 months advocating/caring for Florence during her deteriorating health.
Florence was always known for her caring and gentle nature - she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. No service by request. In lieu of fl owers, donations in her name can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, British Columbia & Yukon.
