Ballistic missiles are big, heavy and expensive.

    These missiles reachheights beyond the

atmosphere and then re-enter at the targetdestination.

    They can be seen byRadars.

They are launched verticallyand only from ground orsubmarines.

    Example.- Agni, Prithvi

Cruise missiles are smaller, lighter and less expensive.

They donot exit theatmosphere but rather hug

the ground and stay veryclose to the ground.

    They cannot be seen byRadars.

They can be launched fromground, submarines oraircraft.

    Example.-BrahMos(Supersonic cruise)

Missiles may be targeted in a number ofways, to guide the missile onto its target.

The most common method is to use someform of radiation.

Another method is to target the missile byknowing the location of the target, andusing a guidance system suchas INS, TERCOM or GPS.

This guidance system guides the missile byknowing the missile's current position andthe position of the target, and thencalculating a course between them.

Whether a guided missile uses a targetingsystem, a guidance system or both, itneeds a flight system.

The flight system uses the data from theguidance system to maneuver the missilein flight.

There are two main systems:1. Vectored thrust (for Cruise missiles).

    2. Aerodynamic maneuvering (for Ballistic

    missiles.).

Missiles are powered by an Engine, generally either a type of Rocket or JetEngine.

    Ballistic missiles generally use RocketEngines.

    Cruise missiles generally us Jet

    Engines.
