2284 THE SACRED PASCHAL

1. In the SacredTriduum, the Churchsolemnly celebrates thegreatest mysteries of our

redemption, keeping bymeans of specialcelebrations the

memorial of her Lord,crucified, buried, andrisen.

The Paschal Fastshould also be keptsacred. It is to be



PASCHAL TRIDUUM 2285 celebrated everywhereon the Friday of theLord’s Passion and,where appropriate,

prolonged also throughHoly Saturday as a wayof coming, with spirit

uplifted, to the joys ofthe Lord’s Resurrection. 2. For a fitting

celebration of the SacredTriduum, a sufficientnumber of lay ministers




is required, who must becarefully instructed as towhat they are to do.The singing of the

people, the ministers,and the Priest Celebranthas a special importance

in the celebrations ofthese days, for whentexts are sung, they have

their proper impact.Pastors should,therefore, not fail to



PASCHAL TRIDUUM 2287 explain to the Christianfaithful, as best they can,the meaning and orderof the celebrations and

to prepare them foractive and fruitfulparticipation.

3. The celebrations of theSacred Triduum are tobe carried out in

cathedral and parochialchurches and only inthose churches in which




they can be performedwith dignity, that is, witha good attendance of thefaithful, an appropriate

number of ministers, andthe means to sing atleast some of the parts.

Consequently, it isdesirable that smallcommunities,

associations, andspecial groups ofvarious kinds join



PASCHAL TRIDUUM 2289 together in thesechurches to carry outthe sacred celebrationsin a more noble manner.



THURSDAY OF THE

LORD ’S SUPPERAt the Evening Mass

1. The Mass of the Lord’sSupper is celebrated inthe evening, at a

convenient time, with thefull participation of thewhole local communityand with all the Priestsand ministers exercisingtheir office.



THURSDAY OF HOLY 2291 WEEK [HOLY THURSDAY ]

2. All Priests mayconcelebrate even if theyhave already

concelebrated theChrism Mass on thisday, or if they have tocelebrate another Massfor the good of theChristian faithful.

3. Where a pastoralreason requires it, thelocal Ordinary may

permit another Mass tobe celebrated inchurches and oratories

in the evening and, incase of genuinenecessity, even in themorning, but only for thefaithful who are in noway able to participate inthe evening Mass. Careshould, nevertheless, betaken that celebrations




of this sort do not takeplace for the advantageof private persons or

special small groups,and do not prejudice theevening Mass.

4. Holy Communion mayonly be distributed to thefaithful during Mass; but

it may be brought to thesick at any hour of theday.

5. The altar may bedecorated with flowerswith a moderation that

accords with thecharacter of this day.The tabernacle shouldbe entirely empty; but asufficient amount ofbread should beconsecrated in this Massfor the Communion ofthe clergy and the

light is shed on theprincipal mysteries thatare commemorated inthis Mass, namely, theinstitution of the HolyEucharist and of thepriestly Order, and thecommandment of the

The Washing of Feet10. After the Homily,where a pastoral reasonsuggests it, the Washing

of Feet follows.11. The men who havebeen chosen are led by

the ministers to seatsprepared in a suitableplace. Then the Priest

(removing his chasubleif necessary) goes toeach one, and, with the

The Transfer of theMost BlessedSacrament

37. After the Prayer afterCommunion, the Priestputs incense in the

thurible while standing,blesses it and then,kneeling, incenses the

Blessed Sacrament threetimes. Then, having puton a white humeral veil,

he rises, takes theciborium, and covers itwith the ends of the veil.

38. A procession isformed in which theBlessed Sacrament,

accompanied by torchesand incense, is carriedthrough the church to a

place of repose preparedin a part of the church orin a chapel suitably




decorated. A lay ministerwith a cross, standingbetween two other

ministers with lightedcandles leads off. Otherscarrying lighted candlesfollow. Before the Priestcarrying the BlessedSacrament comes thethurifer with a smokingthurible. Meanwhile, thehymn Pange, lingua

sung.39. When the processionreaches the place of

repose, the Priest, withthe help of the Deacon ifnecessary, places the

ciborium in thetabernacle, the door ofwhich remains open.




Then he puts incense inthe thurible and,kneeling, incenses the

Blessed Sacrament,while Tantum ergoSacramentum or anothereucharistic chant issung. Then the Deaconor the Priest himselfplaces the Sacrament inthe tabernacle andcloses the door.

40. After a period ofadoration in silence, thePriest and ministers

genuflect and return tothe sacristy.41. At an appropriate

time, the altar is strippedand, if possible, thecrosses are removed

from the church. It isexpedient that any




crosses which remain inthe church be veiled. 42. Vespers (Evening

Prayer) is not celebratedby those who haveattended the Mass of theLord’s Supper. 43. The faithful areinvited to continue

adoration before theBlessed Sacrament for asuitable length of time

during the night,according to localcircumstances, but after

midnight the adorationshould take placewithout solemnity.

44. If the celebration ofthe Passion of the Lordon the following Friday

does not take place inthe same church, theMass is concluded in the

FRIDAY OF THE

PASSION OF THELORD

[GOOD FRIDAY] 1. On this and thefollowing day, by a mostancient tradition, theChurch does notcelebrate theSacraments at all, exceptfor Penance and theAnointing of the Sick.



THE PASSION OF THE LORD 23732. On this day, HolyCommunion isdistributed to the faithfulonly within the

celebration of the Lord’sPassion; but it may bebrought at any hour of

the day to the sick whocannot participate in thiscelebration.

3. The altar should becompletely bare: without

4. On the afternoon ofthis day, about three

o’clock (unless a laterhour is chosen for apastoral reason), there

In the United States, ifthe size or nature of aparish or other

community indicates thepastoral need for anadditional liturgical

service, the DiocesanBishop may permit theservice to be repeated




later. This liturgy by itsvery nature may not,however, be celebrated

in the absence of aPriest.5. The Priest and the

Deacon, if a Deacon ispresent, wearing redvestments as for Mass,

go to the altar in silenceand, after making areverence to the altar,

11. The Liturgy of the

intention is expressed.Then all pray in silencefor a while, andafterwards the Priest,standing at the chair or,if appropriate, at thealtar, with handsextended, sings or saysthe prayer.

THE HOLY NIGHT1. By most ancienttradition, this is the nightof keeping vigil for theLord (Ex 12: 42), inwhich, following theGospel admonition (Lk12: 35-37), the faithful,carrying lighted lamps intheir hands, should belike those looking for theLord when he returns, so

Baptism (the third part),the Church is called tothe table the Lord hasprepared for his people,

the memorial of hisDeath and Resurrectionuntil he comes again

(the fourth part).3. The entire celebrationof the Easter Vigil must

Candle8. A blazing fire isprepared in a suitableplace outside thechurch. When the peopleare gathered there, the

paschal candle. Theprocessional cross andcandles are not carried.Where, however, a fire

cannot be lit outside thechurch, the rite is carriedout as in no. 13 , below.

greets the assembledpeople in the usual wayand briefly instructs

12. When the cutting ofthe cross and of the

other signs has beencompleted, the Priestmay insert five grains of




incense into the candlein the form of a cross,meanwhile saying:
