Exhaust Design Criteria
Regulated Pollutants:– CO (typically 93% Minimum destruction efficiency )
• Many jobs requesting 95% + due to site limits • Planning ahead allows for future reductions without housing changes
– NMNEHC (VOC’s) • Temperature dependent reductions ranging from 35 – 65% depending
on site limitations– HAP’s
• Acrolein, Formaldehyde, or any of the other 158 regulated HAP’s• NESHAP ruling just past will require many sites to add 93% CO
reduction (viewed as a surrogate for HAP’s)– Sound (becoming a key issue for many station designs)
• dbA reductions into the 50’s (insertion loss)• Radiant shell noise restrictions
– NOx (increasingly needed for larger sites despite .5 g/bhp-hr engines)• Up to 90% + reductions utilizing SCR’s
9
Catalyst Performance
3-Way Catalyst– 750°F – 1250°F inlet temperatures required for NOx, CO and HC
reductions– 1350°F maximum outlet temperature
• Catalyst degradation occurs above this point
NG Oxidation Catalyst– 550°F – 1250°F inlet temperatures required for CO reductions– HC reduction is completely temperature dependent
• The higher the exhaust temperature the better the reduction – 1350°F maximum outlet temperature
• Catalyst degradation occurs

Why use SCR’s
For Large Lean Burn or Diesel EnginesReduce NOx by 90% + Allows more HP on sites staying under NOx
thresholds Proven technology already adopted in
automotive, mobile off-highway, and stationary power markets
Allows operators to use their Engines and GasThis is the same technology used on gas turbines
to produce the electricity needed for motor drives
23
SCR for Natural Gas Engines Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)
– Targets NOx only– Other pollutants can be reduced by adding other catalyst types
(oxidation catalyst and/or DPF) NOx is reduced by reacting it with another chemical (a
Reducing Agent) in the presence of a catalyst– The Reducing Agent is sprayed (injected) into the exhaust pipe
upstream of the catalyst SCR can reliably achieve 90% or higher NOx reduction Most applications have been in power generation, some on
mechanical drive applications such as car shredders, pumps, now moving into on-highway
SCR systems operate over a temperature range of about 600° F to 980° F
24
SCR Process
SCR Process requires injecting a Reducing Agent into the Exhaust– The reducing agent provides a reaction partner for NOx to turn into Nitrogen (N2) and Water
(H2O) Aqueous Urea or Ammonia may be used
– Urea is safe to handle and transport, is non-toxic. Standard is 32.5% solution– Ammonia is less expensive, but requires special handling, safety considerations, and permits
Urea breaks down in the Exhaust into Ammonia (NH3)– Heat and Moisture in the exhaust cause Urea to break down– NOx reactions occur with the Ammonia
25
Installation Considerations
A mixing section is used for reducing agent injection and mixing in with the exhaust.
SCR housings are typically mounted horizontally. Space for catalyst access must be maintained
26
Installation Considerations (cont)
Urea storage tanks– Can be plastic, single or double wall– Should have level sensors and low level
alarms Cold weather concerns
– 32.5% solution urea starts to crystallize at about 15° F
– Urea tanks and lines should be insulated below 40° F, and heat traced below 30° F to avoid problems
27
SCR System (Closed Loop – NOx reduction > 90%)
