None of the students were

paying attention to the teacher.

I needed to make the students pay

attention.I made friends

with the students.

They liked me, thankfully

enough, and started paying

more attention.

I'm pretty great at making friends.

In one of my classes, the instructor

struggled to connect and gain respect from the

students. The majority of

students were uninterested in

learning and difficult to engage.

I needed to ease the tension in

class and bridge the gap between the students and the material they were supposed to

be learning.

I tackled this situation by

approaching each student on a

personal level instead of

positioning myself as a superior . I

was always enthusiastic,

humorous and casual – just

enough that they would trust me as

a friend but respect me as

well.

Becoming friends with me made it

harder for students to

disrespect any requests from me This allowed me

to deliver the class curriculum successfully and

increase the engagement in

the class. By the end of the term,

the instructor personally

thanked me for doing this!

I learned that being personable and approachable is more powerful

than simply emphasizing my

authority if I want to get someone

on my side.

Questions to Consider What's missing from the story? Is the story specific enough? Is the story concise enough? Is anything confusing or ambiguous? Are the actions laid out step-by-step? Is the story appropriate? Is the task significant enough?
