2 THE UNIVERSITY OF WAIKATO

Graduation is a special time for students and their families and I always enjoy being part of the celebrations. Congratulations to all students graduating this May. Graduation is a celebration and acknowledgement of all the hard work you have done during your study years. I am delighted to be able to share this important moment with your friends and family and to recognise your academic success.

University is more than an academic experience, it is a time for developing independence, not only in your life, but in your thoughts, ideas and actions too.

I hope that your new qualifications give you the confidence to speak your minds, challenge the status quo and strive for change that benefits not just you, but the communities in which you live and work.

I hope too, that you will remember your university days fondly and I urge you to retain your links with the University of Waikato and take time to reconnect with fellow alumni as you make your way in the world.

Rt Hon James Bolger ONZ Chancellor University of Waikato

Graduation is a wonderful part of the tradition of universities, and one that I am pleased to uphold at the University of Waikato. Acknowledging scholarship and recognising student achievement is at the core of the mission of all universities.

Each institution has its own approach to recognising student achievement, introducing its own traditions that reflect local custom and circumstance. It is what makes each ceremony special and unique. The University of Waikato is no different, its graduation ceremony combining both elements that reflect the 800 years of tradition since the first universities were

established and elements that reflect its unique culture as an institution.

I welcome students, friends and family to graduation at the University of Waikato. I know many of you have travelled a long way to be here. For all graduates, I hope your experience today happily concludes what has no doubt been an eventful and fulfilling journey and that you take away fond memories of your time at the University of Waikato.

Professor Neil Quigley Vice-Chancellor University of Waikato

Student speaker Braden Kempthorne Qualification to be conferred: Bachelor of Management Studies (Hons) Braden grew up on a deer farm in the Waikato. His older sister had been a Waikato Management School student and he decided he’d be one too, majoring in Strategic Management, specialising in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, as well as International Management. He’s a natural-born problem solver and while at University he took up the many opportunities that came his way, representing Waikato at national and international business case competitions, and taking positions as treasurer and vice-president of Waikato Management School Students’ Association. He also tutored for the Department of Strategy and Human Resource Management. Off campus he coached rowing for Hamilton Boys’ High School. Braden is now working for Ernst Young in Wellington as a consultant in their advisory team.

11GRADUATION MAY 2017

Wednesday 3 May 2017 – 2:00pm

Student speaker Nicholas Braae Qualification to be conferred: Doctor of PhilosophyNick grew up in Wellington, where he spent his early years obsessed with cricket, specifically, and sports, generally. He also learned classical piano, and played and sang in jazz bands, shows and choirs at secondary school. Having completed undergraduate degrees in Music and Political Science at the University of Otago, Nick came to Hamilton in 2010 and decided to continue his music education through postgraduate studies at the University of Waikato, studying music ranging from Chopin to Wagner, film scores to electroacoustic composition, and Don McGlashan to Queen. Nick treated his studies and research as an opportunity to understand better the inner-workings of different kinds of music, and he has taken these lessons into the different professional spheres of his musical life. He now works as an academic staff member at Waikato Institute of Technology, where he teaches composition, performance, and theory. He also lectures in song-writing at the University of Waikato, and works as a freelance musical director, arranger, keyboardist, singer and vocal coach. Through it all, he has remained a cricket fanatic.

Student speaker Mahue Dewes Qualification to be conferred: Master of ArtsMahue (Ngāti Poruou, Te Arawa, Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Rangitihi) studied a Masters of Arts in Māori Language with Te Pua Wānanga ki te Ao - Faculty of Māori and Indigenous Studies. He joined Te Waiora o Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato, the Māori Students Association on campus as a bachelors student in his first year of study, and that helped him to network with other new students and make friends to last a life time. Mahue went on student exchange to the University of Hawai’i, living on the Hilo campus for a semester. There he connected with Hawai’ian people who shared the same values and understandings as Māori, learning their histories and exploring the islands. His masters research examined mana in ancient oriori (chants). A keen rugby player, Mahue played for the University club throughout his study years, and played representative rugby for East Coast. He has been in England playing rugby and travelling, and returned to Aotearoa New Zealand to graduate today.

Ceremonial Traditions

Pou Whenua

Elements of university graduation ceremonies have evolved from the 12th century

when the first universities emerged in Europe.

The ceremonial carved Māori mace

being used in today’s graduation

ceremony represents the strong links

between the University and Māori.

The organisation of medieval universities was modelled on the established institutions of the day – the church, the monastery and the guild.

Latin was the language used by medieval scholars, and it is from Latin that the words ‘university’ and ‘degree’ are derived. The Latin term universitas means a guild or union, and universities started as a scholastic guild – a self-constituted community of teachers and scholars.

The word graduate comes from the Latin word gradus, which means step. Admission to study a bachelors degree was the first step taken towards completing a university education. The second step was to become a ‘master’. Masters were Master of Arts graduates whose degrees licensed them to teach. The Chancellor, an officer of the cathedral, originally granted teaching licences.

In 1965, just a year after the University of Waikato was established, Kīngitanga head Koroki invited founding University of Waikato Chancellor and Hamilton Mayor Denis Rogers, along with 20 University of Waikato graduates, to Tūrangawaewae Marae in Ngaruawahia.

There he presented the fledgling institution with the carved taonga to be used as ceremonial mace. The piece was carved by master carver Piri Poutapu, who established a carving school at Tūrangawaewae in 1932. When not being used, the taonga sits in pride of place at the head of the University Council chamber.

university staff today reflect this mix of medieval governance. Robes worn by the Chancellor resemble those worn by the Lord Chancellor of England. Graduates and academic staff wear gowns similar to the dress of medieval clergy. Hoods are also fashioned on an everyday medieval garment, although the coloured lining was a later addition to indicate the wearer’s university and degree.

The University of Waikato

The University of Waikato’s motto is Ko Te Tangata – For the people. It’s an appropriate maxim for a university that was established when a group of people in the Waikato determined that the region should have its own university and reinforces our belief that people are central to the University and are its most valued resource.

In its first year, there were 181 enrolments. Today there are about 12,500 students, and 2,000 of them come from overseas. The University is committed to delivering a world-class education and research portfolio, and pursuing strong international links to advance knowledge. Staff endeavour to keep their teaching future-focused and play an active part in global research.

The University has had a presence in the Bay of Plenty for 20 years, and partners with Te Ohomai, the

polytechnic there to offer a range of qualifications, and building has now started on a new tertiary campus in the Tauranga CBD.

THE CAMPUS

The Hamilton campus covers 65 hectares and is arguably the most attractive university campus in New Zealand, with gardens and grounds that attract a range of sports teams for practice and tournaments, and which provide a venue for many community activities.

In Hamilton there is an ongoing programme of building development and refurbishment. Plans are being developed for a new marae complex

In Tauranga, work has begun on a new University-led campus in the CBD, scheduled to open in 2020. The development is on behalf of the Tertiary Education Partnership, involving the University, Toi Ohomai and Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi. The new campus will enable more students to study in the Bay and extend the range of qualifications and study options for students in the region.

EXPANDING HORIZONS

The University strives to ensure its teaching and research is relevant. We have also worked hard to ensure

university study becomes accessible to a wider range of students. To that end, we have extended Te Ara ki Angitū: Pathways to Excellence programme which brings students from outlying towns in the region to campus, offering fees scholarships and heavily subsidised daily transport to and from campus. The programme started in 2016 with 40 first-year students. This year, 123 new students began university study through the programme.

Our focus on our local communities is balanced by our commitment to a culture of internationalisation, which is measured through the diversity of our student and staff profiles, the support and celebration of that diversity, and a long-standing pride in our reputation for the pastoral care of our international students. At the same time, we are constantly reviewing curriculum, programme design and extending global networks and connections to expose our students to international influences.

This year the University will launch its Employability Plus Programme – a new initiative that gives students the opportunity to gain work-ready skills through volunteer activity. Students will be recognised for the extra work they do and will stand out when they are job hunting by having the practical skills and experience that employers are seeking.
