Our first Dot-Unity Hands-on initiative for 2014 took place earlier this year at AdHope. African Diaspora Hope (ADHOPE) is the latest DotUnity beneficiary. This multi-discipline non governmental organization (NGO) started in 2008 with the aim of supporting all African nationals including African foreign nationals living in South Africa. This crèche provides a day care service to children whose parents are economically disadvantaged and have no stable and suitable employment. A number of the parents are HIV positive, and many of the kids only have 1 guardian. The children receive meals, warmth and shelter, and care, and most of all they have a safe and secure place where they can play, learn, rest and be loved. A number of our staff members joined the DotUnity Team to give the inside of the crèche a lick of bright paint. After 4 hours of painting ( and playing with the children) unfortunately our painting job is not quite done so we will be going back to Adhope for our next hands-on initiative on 13th June.

We are also going to be planting the Winter Veggie Patch at the Strathyre Home for Girls in Kensington who are another of our DotUnity Beneficiaries. Planting of veggie patches at Strathyre has become a seasonal activity for DotUnity and we are pleased that the produce from the garden is used by the kitchen to supplement the Girl’s diet. For those who are unaware, Compass “safe haven & crèche in Edenvale , and Kensington Ridge Primary School are also DotUnity beneficiaries – making up our maximum number of beneficiaries – Four!

DotUnity is not about giving money. Our funding is limited to the donations we receive from our staff, and the contributions made by Mint. What we have pledged is our time and resources where these are appropriate. Once a quarter, we go on-site to our beneficiaries and ‘get our hands dirty’ by participation in various “hands-on” initiatives.
