PARSONS BFA PRODUCT DESIGNYEAR: 2014 THESIS

Page 35: Minsangkim product design portfolio 2014

More than 60 years has passed since the two Koreas were divided into separate countries as a tragic result of fratricidal war. The name Project 6.25 is inspired by the date of the Korean War.

Project 6.25 is composed of three different products: the candle, candle holder, and an educational package to represent the relationship between North and South Korea.

Project 6.25 will hopefully change the long term global vision of Korea by creating an educational platform to facilitate a peaceful reunification of the two Koreas through poetic interpretations in design.

Project 6.25 is composed of three different products: The candle, candle holder, and an eductional package to represent the relationship between North and South Korea.

Page 36: Minsangkim product design portfolio 2014

A candle lighting ceremony is used to bring people together for a common cause. Some candle lighting ceremonies are held as a remembrance for a person, group of people, or in a significant national event. During these ceremonies all guests hold a lit candle. This is a way to show unity, and to bring people together.

“Why lighting a candle?”

Page 37: Minsangkim product design portfolio 2014

The conflict betwen two political states as democratic state of South Korea and communist state of North Korea begins in Early 1950’s as shifting from the World War II and the outbreak of the Korean war that divided country into two occurred on the early morning of June 25th 1950 when North Korea invaded into South Korea. The Korean war held stalemate until an armistice was signed on July 27th 1953.

Based on historical records, the division of Korea initially started right after the declaration of an indipendence from the rule of Japanese imperialism in 1945. The division of the two Koreas became solid as of the Korean War. The Korean war has left the two Koreas separated by the demilitarized zone which is also known as 38th Parallel until today.

Page 38: Minsangkim product design portfolio 2014

“Only 4% responded they know about the cause of the division between the two Koreas. This is why Project 6.25 came into life.”

“PROJECT 6.25 WILL CREATE A PLATFORM THAT WILL BECOME A FOOTHOLD TOWARDS THE UNIFICATION OF THE TWO KOREAS”

EDUCATION GIFT SHARING CREATING AWARENESSYoung Korean students from elementary school to high school will learn about the importance and the benefits of the unification of Korea through Project 6.25

Project 6.25 will also create an educational platform and an awareness among people who are less firmiliar with the history of Korea and who wishes to learn why the two Koreas should peacefully reunite

Project 6.25 will be shared as a gift for the seperated families in North and South Korea during reunion celemonies

The shape of a candle was inspired by the Ying and Yang feature. The color represent the two Koreas as red represent North and blue represent South Korea. The color red and blue Ying and Yang feature is also identified in South Korean flags.

The mechanism behind Project 6.25 candle holder is when the candle that represent the two Koreas melt, wax gets blended and collected into a secondary candle holder that ultimately represent the unification of the two Koreas.

This material is called Corian which is manufactured by Dupont. Corian is a versatile material that mainly used for a countertop designs. The name Corian also reminds the word Korean by its pronunciation. Its high service temperature could endure the melting wax. The level of melted wax can by identified through a transparent acrylic plate

Two colored wax gets blended and collected into a lower candle holder creating a unified Korean landmass. It can be reused as a secondary candle holder

Based on my design philosophy, a product without a package is not a complete product. My own definition of a package is a fantasy. Project 6.25 package is more than just a paper package. It is an educational object which the user may interact with the message that the designer is trying to bestow upon.

QUESTION:

Page 54: Minsangkim product design portfolio 2014

$ 102.50 FOR THE FULL PACKAGE (candle / candle holder)$ 47.00 FOR THE candle PACKAGE (candle)

Page 55: Minsangkim product design portfolio 2014

$ 88.00 FOR THE FULL PACKAGE (candle / candle holder) (replacing corian to porcelain (upper candle holder)

$ 47.00 FOR THE candle PACKAGE (candle)

There has been a debate over the material options for the Upper candle holder. Although Corian is a versatile material, it also has the down side for its high price. Therefore, I would like to propose an alternative material option: Porcelean. The overall price for the full package dropped from $102.50 to $88.00 as it has become cost efficient.
