WHAT IS A HTHT MINOR? A HTHT-minor fits within the UT profile: High Tech, Human Touch. The minor is offered in English and accessible for both national and international students. The goal of the HTHT-minor is to illuminate specific societal themes for which the UT develops High Tech Human Touch solutions. These solutions are created by conducting high-quality research. Both the form and the content of the minors are High Tech Human Touch (multidisciplinary) and are profiling for the student. The UT offers most HTHT-minors in a coherent package of 2 (30 EC). There are also HTHT minors of 15 EC that do not belong to a package. You can choose one of these minors and combine this with one minor of a package. If possible, you can even choose 2 minors from different packages. WWW.UTWENTE.NL/MINOR MINOR AIRCRAFT ENGINEERING AEROSPACE ENGINEERING IS A FRONT RUNNER IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW HIGH TECH APPLICATIONS. ANALYSIS AND PRODUCTION METHODS, NEW MATERIALS AND PRODUCTS, DEVELOPED IN AEROSPACE ARE OFTEN ADOPTED LATER ON IN OTHER ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS. In this design all knowledge gained during the lectures on Aircraft Technology, Aircraft Structures and Aerodynamics will be applied and integrated. The conceptual design will be carried out in groups of 6 to 7 students. The design must be presented and defended in front of all other minor students and the team of lectures. The minor Aerospace Management & Operations addresses the utilization of aircraft and the industrial management processes in the development, use and maintenance of aircraft. MINOR INFORMATIONThe central theme in this minor is the Conceptual Designof an Aircraft. In this design all knowledge gained duringthe lectures on Aircraft Technology, Aircraft Structures and Aerodynamics will be applied and integrated. Theconceptual design will be carried out in groups of 6 to 7students. The design must be presented and defendedin front of all other minor students and the team oflectures.

The minors Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Management & Operations together from the HTHT Package'Aeronautical Engineering & Management'. The minorAerospace Management & Operations addresses theutilization of aircraft and the industrial managementprocesses in the development, use and maintenance ofaircraft. Many technical aspects are taken as given, which are treated in more detail in Aircraft Engineering.

The minor Aircraft Engineering starts with anintroduction on Aircraft Technology, which gives a briefhistory of aviation, the evolution of aircraft

configurations, the principles of flight and the standardatmosphere. Subsequently, the aerodynamics of aircraftwings (lift, drag, pitching moment, stall, stability) isexplained as well as the propulsion of aircraft. In Aircraft Structures an overview of the structural parts, their designation and their function in the overallstructure is presented. Subjects that determine therequirements in the design process that are treated inthe course are the aerodynamic and structural(dynamic) loads, buckling, fatigue and flutter. The firstairplanes were made out of steel, wood and linen. Lateraluminum became the most important material.Nowadays, two new materials become favorable, namely composites and metal fiber laminates (Glare).Special attention will be paid to both new materials andGlare will be used to show what effort it takes before anew material is accepted in the aircraft industry. In Aerodynamics the fundamentals of aircraftaerodynamics are treated with emphasis ondetermining the aerodynamic forces (lift and drag) andmoments (pitching moment) for wings flying atsubsonic and transonic speeds. Simplifyingassumptions, e.g. neglecting viscosity, will be made toderive analytical relations for the lift and induced dragof a wing. Also the consequences of these assumptionswill be discussed. Nowadays computer simulations playan important role in aircraft design in general, andaircraft aerodynamics in particular. Therefore, alsoattention is paid to numerical methods that are used inthe design phase, e.g. panel methods with a correctionto account for the viscous effects. During the Kick Off of the assignment for theConceptual Design of an Aircraft an overview will begiven of the steps that must be carried out in theconceptual design phase, which results in the globaldesign of a new aircraft. Further, groups are formedand the (challenging) requirements for the aircraft willbe presented and explained. Weekly meetings will beorganized, where design teams report on their progress

and can pose questions. In week 9 the reports have tobe handed in and the project is concluded with oralpresentations. In week 10 the exams take place. At firstthese are written exams, with the possibility of an oralextended exam. Due to the large amount of work andthe short time, the project group members have todistribute the workload, nominate specialists on theindividual topics and communicate well. In this minor the students will learn• The functions of the structural parts of an aircraft• To analyze and explain the loads on an aircraft• The causes/reasons of instabilities, such as buckling,

flutter, stall and fatigue• To determine the aerodynamics and performance of

an aircraft on a global level• To collaborate and operate in a design team• To make a conceptual design of an aircraft• To present and defend their design in front of a team

Prior knowledge Knowledge on Math B1, B2, D1 and D2 is aprerequisite. For the theory, see the book of Thomas'Calculus, Early Transcendentals'. Especially chapters13-16 are important. Knowledge on Fluid & SolidMechanics is highly recommended.
