MINOR LEAGUE CLIPS Wings playoff hopes come to a crashing end Kevin Oklobzija – Democrat & Chronicle – 9/2/16 Well, it was fun while it lasted. Now it's over. The Rochester Red Wings were eliminated from playoff contention on Friday night when Lehigh Valley scored five runs in the top of the first and rolled to a 7-1 victory at Frontier Field. Not only did the Wings lose, they were nearly no-hit. They were down to their final out before Reynaldo Rodriguez lined a single to center for their only hit against three IronPigs pitchers. And thus, the Wings' hopes of pulling off the highly unlikely five-game sweep of the IronPigs came to an sudden end with three games remaining in the regular season. Lehigh Valley (83-57) earned the International League's one wild card playoff berth, and will go to Allentown to host Rochester for three meaningless games over the weekend. "It was a good season but we're not exactly where we thought we'd be," Triple-A rookie left fielder Adam Brett Walker, who had never missed the playoffs in four previous minor league seasons and won championships at Double-A Chattanooga, high-A Fort Myers and Rookie-ball Elizabethton. The Wings posted just the third 80-win season by the franchise since 1977 but they won't compete for the Governors' Cup. Such is life in the IL. Only the three division winners are guaranteed playoff berths, and the wild card goes to the second-place team with the best record. More amazing: Since the Governors' Cup playoffs began in 1933, it's the first time in Red Wings franchise history that they have won 80 games and not reached the post-season. Rochester could still finish with the third-best record in the league, but will finish only third in the North Division. Columbus (80-61) earned one playoff berth by winning the West Division and Gwinnett (64-75) is closing in on the South title, despite being half-a-month below .500. Lehigh Valley made sure there was no drama on Friday, however. Seven batters into the game the IronPigs had a 5-0 lead and had chased Wings starter Jason Wheeler from the mound. "I just didn't have it," said Wheeler, who went 11-6 in a bounce-back season. "I got to two strikes but I couldn't put anyone away. The two-strike pitch just wasn't quite good enough. It was either up a little or got a little too much of the plate." Wheeler retired lead-off hitter Taylor Featherston on a pop-up and then the nightmare followed. J.P. Crawford singled, Nick Williams was hit by a pitch and Andrew Knapp walked to load the bases. Cam Perkins then looped a two-run single to right-center, Cody Asche walked to re-load the bases, Brock Stassi grounded a two-run single up the middle and Cedric Hunter lined a single to right. " 'Wheels' had such a good year for us," Quade said. "This is tough, but it doesn't take away from all he's done for the club." It may not have mattered. The Wings couldn't hit against IronPigs starter Ben Lively. He fanned 10 in his six innings and the only batter to reach was Walker when Williams dropped his fly to right. Joely Rodriguez pitched a perfect seventh and eighth and Elvis Araujo came within one out of a combined no-hitter for the IronPigs when Rodriguez laced a 1-0 pitch to center for a solid single, scoring James Beresford, who had walked and was allowed to steal second on defensive indifference.
22
"That's not the way you want to end a heck of a run," Quade said of the one-hit loss. "But I'm so proud of the group in there (the clubhouse). What I'm proudest of is we played very well in a really good division." 2017 schedule is out The Red Wings will play their 2017 home opener on Friday, April 14, against the Syracuse Chiefs. First pitch will be 1:35 p.m. The game kicks off a three-game matinee weekend series with the Chiefs and follows eight straight road games. The Wings open the International League season with a four-game series in Syracuse starting on April 6, then they go to Buffalo for four. Game times haven't been announced. The Wings play at home just 12 times in the first 39 days and will spend the week of April 17 down south for three-game series in Gwinnett, Georgia, and Charlotte, North Carolina. The holidays of Memorial Day, July 4 and Labor Day have games at Frontier Field. The Labor Day matinee against Pawtucket is the season finale.
