The Cougars beat regular season champion St. Scholastica 6-5 in a shootout, after tying 2-2. Also earning AQ’s were Loras and Carthage, with Loras beating IIAC regular season champion Luther 1-0, after placing second during the season, and Carthage defending their regular season title, winning 1-0 in overtime over North Park in the CCIW tournament. Calvin fell 1-0 in the semifinals of the MIAA tourney, but earned an at- large berth after winning the regular season title. THREE-TIME TOURNEY CHAMPS The UMAC Tournament title was the third for the Cougars, in just the programs sixth season. Morris also won tournament titles in 2007 and 2008, finishing as runner-up in 2009 and 2010. The UMAC first gained AQ status in the 2010 season. NCAA ROOKIES This season marks the Cougars first trip to the NCAA Tournament. Morris’ previous UMAC tournament championships came before the conference was an automatic qualifier for the national tournament, and in the first season of the AQ in 2010, the Cougars fell 4-1 in the Championship game. NCAA VETERANS Calvin and Loras each return to the NCAA Tournament after making impressive runs in 2010. Each also met a similar fate, falling to eventual final four team UW-Oshkosh. Loras advanced to the Sweet Sixteen, before ending their season with a 2-0 loss, while Calvin went a step further, finishing their season with a 1-0 loss in the Elite Eight. Calvin was a national runner-up in 2009. Carthage meanwhile is making it’s first trip to the tournament since the 2007 season. TOURNAMENT MVP Morris goalkeeper Tyler Weber was named Most Valuable Player at the conclusion of the UMAC Tournament. In two games, Weber pitched a first round shutout and totaled nine saves, while also making several huge stops in two shootouts, as each game went past the second overtime. TURNING TO TURNBULL All head coach Scott Turnbull has done in his first full season as head coach is lead the program to unseen heights. Former assistant for both the Morris men’s and women’s teams, Turnbull was named interim head coach before the 2010 season. A former kicker on the UMM football team, and still record holder for most field goals in a game (4) and longest punt (89), he led the Cougars to a third place finish last season, and runner-up tally in the UMAC Tournament. The interim tag was removed last winter, setting up the success for this season. 2011 NCAA MEN’S SOCCER TOURNAMENT #12 Loras Minnesota Morris #23 Carthage Calvin Sweet Sixteen UMMCOUGARS.ORG | @UMMCOUGARS NEWS UPDATE FOR RELEASE Contact: Pat McCabe ([email protected] | o: 320-589-6423 | c: 612-807-4095) November 10, 2011 MEN’S SOCCER NOTES P.E. Weber Grills Up OffensesSenior goalkeeper Tyler Weber has made it tough for opposing offenses all season, posting a school record 11 shutouts, smashing the previous record of eight. He’s also second in career shutouts with 25, just two off the current record of 27, doing so in 15 fewer games. His career 0.57 goals against average is also a school record. Only twice this season has Weber allowed multiple goals, but never more that two.
He’s a playerPlaying in one more game couldn’t have come at a better time for senior Greg Borchers. He has started all but one game he has played, including every game he has played over the last three season’s. With his start on Friday, he will tie program records for games played with 81, and games started with 80.
COlOradO COnneCtiOnThe Cougars have been led all season - and the last four years - by their four seniors from the Rocky Mountain State. The only seniors on the roster, Greg Borchers, Toby Glaser, Matt Johnson and Tyler Weber all came to UMM from Colorado as freshman in 2008. Some of the most decorated and statistically best players in school history, they have led the Cougars to four conference tournament championship games, two UMAC Tournament titles, the 2009 regular season championship and now the 2011 NCAA Tournament.
