Core Competency Inventory

This inventory is an initial planning guide for paraprofessionals. If completed, it will provide anoverview of competency preparedness that can be used by paraprofessionals and districts as ageneral guide from which to plan professional development. In addition to personal self-assessment, this inventory offers a means by which the paraprofessional’s supervisor can beinvolved in this process. The supervisor is an important source of insights regarding levels ofpreparedness and professional development planning.

Paraprofessional InstructionsThis inventory is designed to assist you in assessing your level of preparedness for the tasksrelated to each core competency. Complete this form by thinking about your own level ofpreparedness for the tasks related to each competency. Then, using the three-point scale, rateyour level of preparedness by circling the number that best represents your level of preparednessfor tasks related to the competency. In the space following each competency, describe trainingand experience you have had that has contributed to your preparedness for the tasks related tothe competency.

Instructional Supervisor InstructionsAs the paraprofessional is asked to assess his or her level of preparedness regarding tasksrelated to each competency, instructional supervisors (teachers who direct the paraprofessional’sday-to-day work) are asked to provide a second opinion using the same three-point scale. However, for cases where an instructional supervisor does not have adequate knowledge torender a meaningful opinion, a fourth option of “do not know” is provided. Complete this form bythinking about the paraprofessional’s level of preparedness for the tasks related to eachcompetency. Then, using the four-point scale, rate the paraprofessional’s level of preparednessby circling the number that best represents his or her level of preparedness for tasks related to thecompetency. The instructional supervisor’s completion of this form can provide a valuable basisfor discussion and professional development planning.
