There is increasing recognition that graduating from high school and being prepared for college and career requires a skill set that extends beyond traditional academics. Eight out of ten employers say SEL skills are the most important to success and yet also the hardest skills to find. The overwhelming majority of school administrators (96%), teachers (93%) and parents (81%) believe that SEL is just as important as academic learning. You will leave this session with SEL tools and activities, as well as an action plan to imbed SEL skill-building into 4-H programming. This training is for all 4-H youth and adult volunteers in clubs and county-wide groups

and programs, including committees, federations, leader’s councils and others. Each group should bring a team of youth (grades 6 and older) and adult volunteers to get the most out of the content. All clubs are expected to have at least one adult representative attend the training TO REGISTER: Contact North St. Louis County Extension at 218.749.7120 or email [email protected] by Mon. November 11th 2019. No cost to attend. Please bring a dessert to share!

Apply to represent Minnesota 4-H at the National 4-H Conference!

Each spring, nearly 250 4-H youth from across the country gather at the National 4-H Conference to

develop new skills and share their ideas with our country’s decision makers. We are looking for Minnesota's representatives - is your teenager one of them? While at the conference, youth join round table groups to discuss an issue of interest to a federal agency. Youth will work together, under the guidance of a facilitator, to develop a presentation and share it with agency representatives. Additionally, attendees participate in skill-building workshops, engage in team-building exercises, and learn about 4-H in other states. At the end of the experience, the attendees spend a “Day on the Hill” and visit with Minnesota legislators. The National 4-H Conference will be held March 28 - April 2, at the National 4-H

Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Selected delegates will have at least three pre-trip online meetings to prepare for the experience, and will be expected to complete a post-trip application activity in their local community. Eligible youth are current 10-12th grade students who will be at least 15 years old by Jan. 1. Deadline: Applications and references are due Nov. 15 at 11:59 p.m. central time. Learn more and apply. Blu registration opens Nov. 1 The Minnesota 4-H State Ambassadors invite youth in grades 6+ to participate in the 2020 Building Leadership and Understanding (BLU) leadership workshops! Visit Washington, D.C. with Minnesota 4-H Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) is an exciting opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. with Minnesota 4-H! In this experience, Minnesota teens will join youth from across the country to participate in this week-long experience in our nation's capital. During the conference, youth will attend workshops and simulations to learn about the legislative branch of the government, tour monuments and historic landmarks in and around Washington, DC, and visit the offices of our members of Congress. Interested in learning more?

• Keep an eye on our conference website. We will announce details here soon regarding location, travel, and so much more.

• Watch this video to hear about the experience from past attendees.

• Talk to a local 4-H staff member about the opportunity - they’ll connect you with more info.

Registration will close when all spots are claimed, or by Dec. 10, whichever comes earlier. A limited number of volunteer chaperone spaces are also available - see the website to learn more! Order from the Clovermart Winter Sale beginning Nov. 1! The Minnesota 4-H State Ambassadors are launching their winter sale on Nov. 1. Most of your favorite items from state fair can be ordered beginning Nov. 1 at z.umn.edu/CmartWinter19. Items will be shipped out on Dec. 14. Clovermart is part of the Minnesota 4-H State Ambassador experience. Funds raised from this effort are used for Minnesota 4-H leadership programs. Watch for 4-H Agronomy Opportunities! The 4-H agronomy program is launching on Nov. 1! Minnesota 4-H youth and their parents will be able to attend a variety of new learning opportunities, sign-up for start-up kits and even compete in new events. You can start now by reviewing your 4HOnline account and signing up for one or two project areas related to agronomy. Watch out for these upcoming opportunities:

• Agronomy days • Agronomy tours • Agronomy sessions at 4-H project days • Crop scouting events • Agriculture Ambassador’s • Much more!

Keep reading 4-H Clover Update for new opportunities. Also, if you’re an adult who’s interested in volunteering with agronomy, we will be looking for volunteers to help out with a number of events or serve as a coach for a crop scouting team. Keep checking back for new agronomy-related events and opportunities!

Check out these tools to support new 4-H families First year 4-H families have told us what they wished they would have known to navigate their entry into the 4-H program. In addition, a Minnesota 4-H survey also revealed that new families were less satisfied with their first year 4-H experience. Minnesota’s 4-H program is rolling out new resources to make sure new 4-H families and volunteers are welcomed, develop a sense of belonging and have their questions answered during their first year in the 4-H program.

4-H Clubs may want to use one of these four volunteer roles to support new families:

• A mentor family. • A new family navigator. • A welcoming committee consisting of a

team of youth and adults. • A new family coordinator to organize

the club’s efforts. The Welcoming and supporting new 4-H families: Conversation guide is designed to support new 4-H families through their first program year and can be adapted to meet local program and family needs. Download the guide or ask your local 4-H staff for a copy. Sign up for the 2020 Minnesota 4-H Engineering Design Challenge!

The 2020 Minnesota 4-H Engineering Design Challenge is here! This year’s theme, Mission to Mars, is sure to be a fun and challenging opportunity for youth to apply engineering design practices,

develop their teamwork and communications skills, address an issue and design a solution. What is the Engineering Design Challenge? In the Minnesota 4-H Engineering Design Challenge, youth not only employ physics and engineering, but humor and storytelling, to create a Rube Goldberg™ type of machine. A Rube Goldberg™ machine is an overly complex contraption that uses everyday items in a fun or amusing way to complete a task. The 4-H Engineering Design Challenge offers a Level 1 experience for youth in grades 3 - 8 who create a machine that uses a series of simple machines (inclined plane, screw, wedge,

level, wheel and axle, pulley) to accomplish the task theme. In Level 2, youth in grades 7 – 12 incorporate four categories of engineering in their machines to accomplish the task: mechanical, chemical, electrical and fluid power. Teams that build a machine can demonstrate their machine at their county fair, the Engineering Design Challenge State Showcase, the Minnesota State Fair Showcase and anywhere they would like to share their learning. Want to Learn More? All the updated information for the challenge including specific challenge details, the 2020 updated Level 1 and Level 2 handbooks, team registration links, learning resources, and more can be found on the Minnesota 4-H Engineering Design Challenge website (z.umn.edu/4hedc). New resources connected to this year's Mission to Mars theme are launching soon! We are looking forward to a successful year of 4-H Engineering Design Challenge program offerings! For registration questions, contact Amber Greeley ([email protected]). For all other questions, contact Michael Compton ([email protected]) at the University of Minnesota Extension Center for Youth Development. Keep youth safe when participating in winter activities Wintertime provides great opportunities for 4-H clubs and groups to enjoy the outdoors through a variety of activities and outings. These activities may also involve varying levels of risk. Ensure 4-H members and volunteers stay safe by using the guidelines and policies provided. Note that special activities insurance must be taken out for some activities as they are not covered by annual group accident insurance (these are noted in the guidelines). Work with your local Extension educator to secure this insurance.

• Some activities are only allowed if conducted by another entity and some are not allowed. Check for these two categories listed in the guidelines and policies before including them in the annual program plan.

• Remember – all youth must be enrolled as 4-H members to participate in these activities and outings.

Utilize the risk management planning tool before the activity or outing occurs to help keep youth safe when participating in winter activities. Contact your local Extension educator if you have any questions. Plan and develop the club budget This is the time of year for 4-H clubs to develop their annual budget. The budget provides a written plan for raising and spending money to accomplish club goals.

• The budget is based on the 4-H year, Oct. 1 - Sept. 30.

• The budget development process is led by the youth treasurer and adult Minnesota 4-H volunteer advisor and can include other youth and Minnesota 4-H volunteers in the club.

• The club should determine their goals and develop the budget to meet those goals.

• Once the budget is complete the financial team presents it to the full club for review, changes and approval.

• Record the motion, vote of approval and date in the secretary’s minutes.

Present monthly reports to your club throughout the year showing how income and expenses are tied to the budget -- it’s a great way to help all 4-H members understand where and how funds are being used!
